A study on morphological and dynamical properties of neuronal growth cones
In the developing nervous system and in the adult brain, neurons constantly need to solve mechanical problems. Neuronal growth cones are the main motile structures located at the tip of neurites and are composed of a lamellipodium from which thin filopodia emerge. They are responsible for extension of neurite processes and for transducing signals from extracellular cues to alter directionality, branching, and motility. They must decide how to explore the environment and in which direction to grow; they also need to establish appropriate contacts, to avoid obstacles and to determine how much force to exert. The complete understanding of the nervous system and its basic unit, the neuron, demands a quantification of the behavioral pattern and the
morphological characteristics..
Research and Technology
Johnson Space Center (JSC) accomplishments in new and advanced concepts during 1989 are highlighted. This year, reports are grouped in sections, Medical Science, Solar System Sciences, Space Transportation Technology, and Space Systems Technology. Summary sections describing the role of JSC in each program are followed by descriptions of significant tasks. Descriptions are suitable for external consumption, free of technical jargon, and illustrated to increase ease of comprehension
Aerospace Medicine and Biology: A continuing bibliography with indexes, supplement 139
The biological, physiological, psychological, and environmental effects to which man is subjected during and following simulated or actual flight in the earth's atmosphere or in interplanetary space are referenced. Similar effects on biological organisms of lower order are also included. Related topics such as sanitary problems, pharmacology, toxicology, safety and survival, life support systems, exobiology, and personnel factors are discussed. Applied research is emphasized, but references to fundamental studies and theoretical principles related to experimental development are also included. A total of 242 reports, articles, and other documents are listed

Aerial Vehicles
This book contains 35 chapters written by experts in developing techniques for making aerial vehicles more intelligent, more reliable, more flexible in use, and safer in operation. It will also serve as an inspiration for further improvement of the design and application of aeral vehicles. The advanced techniques and research described here may also be applicable to other high-tech areas such as robotics, avionics, vetronics, and space
Advanced Knowledge Application in Practice
The integration and interdependency of the world economy leads towards the creation of a global market that offers more opportunities, but is also more complex and competitive than ever before. Therefore widespread research activity is necessary if one is to remain successful on the market. This book is the result of research and development activities from a number of researchers worldwide, covering concrete fields of research
