Design and Implementation of a Clinical Pharmacy Management and Electronic Prescription System
A pharmacy is viewed as a physical store contained either in a hospital or as a small venture primarily saddled with the responsibility of dispensing medication to various individuals. While various individuals choose voluntarily to bypass the need for professional medical advice in the area of drug prescription by engaging in self-medication, either as a result of lack of funds or ignorance of what should be done, quality pharmaceutical services could mean the difference between life and death. Problems such as handwriting misinterpretation, the cost incurred from frequent calls from pharmacists to physicians, data inconsistency and long waiting lines exist in traditional, manual pharmacy management methods. The goal of this paper, therefore, is to review the traditional approach to pharmacy management and prescription handling with the view of developing an electronic version. The solution was implemented using the Java programming language due to its platform independence and object-oriented nature. The proposed system addresses the aforementioned problems
An architecture and methodology for the design and development of Technical Information Systems
In order to meet demands in the context of Technical Information Systems (TIS) pertaining to reliability, extensibility, maintainability, etc., we have developed an architectural framework with accompanying methodological guidelines for designing such systems. With the framework, we aim at complex multiapplication information systems using a repository to share data among applications. The framework proposes to keep a strict separation between Man-Machine-Interface and Model data, and provides design and implementation support to do this effectively.\ud
The framework and methodological guidelines have been developed in the context of the ESPRIT project IMPRESS. The project also provided for ldquotesting groundsrdquo in the form of a TIS for the Spanish Electricity company Iberdrola.\ud

Design of a shared whiteboard component for multimedia conferencing
This paper reports on the development of a framework for multimedia applications in the domain of tele-education. The paper focuses on the protocol design of a specific component of the framework, namely a shared whiteboard application. The relationship of this component with other components of the framework is also discussed. A salient feature of the framework is that it uses an advanced ATM-based network service. The design of the shared whiteboard component is considered representative for the design as a whole, and is used to illustrate how a flexible protocol architecture utilizing innovative network functions and satisfying demanding user requirements can be developed

Generic unified modelling process for developing semantically rich, dynamic and temporal models
Models play a vital role in supporting a range of activities in numerous domains. We rely on models to support the design, visualisation, analysis and representation of parts of the world around us, and as such significant research effort has been invested into numerous areas of modelling; including support for model semantics, dynamic states and behaviour, temporal data storage and visualisation. Whilst these efforts have increased our capabilities and allowed us to create increasingly powerful software-based models, the process of developing models, supporting tools and /or data structures remains difficult, expensive and error-prone. In this paper we define from literature the key factors in assessing a model’s quality and usefulness: semantic richness, support for dynamic states and object behaviour, temporal data storage and visualisation. We also identify a number of shortcomings in both existing modelling standards and model development processes and propose a unified generic process to guide users through the development of semantically rich, dynamic and temporal models
Object-oriented modelling with unified modelling language 2.0 for simple software application based on agile methodology
Unified modelling language (UML) 2.0 introduced in 2002 has been developing
and influencing object-oriented software engineering and has become a standard
and reference for information system analysis and design modelling. There are
many concepts and theories to model the information system or software
application with UML 2.0, which can make ambiguities and inconsistencies for a
novice to learn to how to model the system with UML especially with UML 2.0.
This article will discuss how to model the simple software application by using
some of the diagrams of UML 2.0 and not by using the whole diagrams as
suggested by agile methodology. Agile methodology is considered as convenient
for novices because it can deliver the information technology environment to
the end-user quickly and adaptively with minimal documentation. It also has the
ability to deliver best performance software application according to the
customer's needs. Agile methodology will make simple model with simple

Pattern Reification as the Basis for Description-Driven Systems
One of the main factors driving object-oriented software development for
information systems is the requirement for systems to be tolerant to change. To
address this issue in designing systems, this paper proposes a pattern-based,
object-oriented, description-driven system (DDS) architecture as an extension
to the standard UML four-layer meta-model. A DDS architecture is proposed in
which aspects of both static and dynamic systems behavior can be captured via
descriptive models and meta-models. The proposed architecture embodies four
main elements - firstly, the adoption of a multi-layered meta-modeling
architecture and reflective meta-level architecture, secondly the
identification of four data modeling relationships that can be made explicit
such that they can be modified dynamically, thirdly the identification of five
design patterns which have emerged from practice and have proved essential in
providing reusable building blocks for data management, and fourthly the
encoding of the structural properties of the five design patterns by means of
one fundamental pattern, the Graph pattern. A practical example of this
philosophy, the CRISTAL project, is used to demonstrate the use of
description-driven data objects to handle system evolution.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figure
Next generation software environments : principles, problems, and research directions
The past decade has seen a burgeoning of research and development in software environments. Conferences have been devoted to the topic of practical environments, journal papers produced, and commercial systems sold. Given all the activity, one might expect a great deal of consensus on issues, approaches, and techniques. This is not the case, however. Indeed, the term "environment" is still used in a variety of conflicting ways. Nevertheless substantial progress has been made and we are at least nearing consensus on many critical issues.The purpose of this paper is to characterize environments, describe several important principles that have emerged in the last decade or so, note current open problems, and describe some approaches to these problems, with particular emphasis on the activities of one large-scale research program, the Arcadia project. Consideration is also given to two related topics: empirical evaluation and technology transition. That is, how can environments and their constituents be evaluated, and how can new developments be moved effectively into the production sector
Business Domain Modelling using an Integrated Framework
This paper presents an application of a “Systematic Soft Domain Driven Design Framework” as a soft systems approach to domain-driven design of information systems development. The framework combining techniques from Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), the Unified Modelling Language (UML), and an implementation pattern known as “Naked Objects”. This framework have been used in action research projects that have involved the investigation and modelling of business processes using object-oriented domain models and the implementation of software systems based on those domain models. Within this framework, Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) is used as a guiding methodology to explore the problem situation and to develop the domain model using UML for the given business domain. The framework is proposed and evaluated in our previous works, and a real case study “Information Retrieval System for academic research” is used, in this paper, to show further practice and evaluation of the framework in different business domain. We argue that there are advantages from combining and using techniques from different methodologies in this way for business domain modelling. The framework is overviewed and justified as multimethodology using Mingers multimethodology ideas
