    Lens antenna arrays: an efficient framework for sparse-aware large-MIMO communications

    The recent increase in the demand for higher data transmission rates in wireless communications has entailed many implementation issues that can only be resolved by going through a full paradigm shift. Making use of the millimetric spectrum bands is a very attractive solution to the shortage of radio resources but, to garner all their potential, new techniques must be developed. Most of them are contained in the Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (M-MIMO) framework: the idea of using very large antenna arrays for cellular communications. In this thesis, we propose the usage of Lens Antenna Arrays (LAA) to avoid the unbearable power and infrastructure costs posed by traditional M-MIMO architectures. This novel communication system exploits the angular-dependent power focusing capabilities of an electromagnetic lens to discern between waves with different angles of arrival and departure, without explicit signal processing. The work presented in this document motivates the use of LAAs in mmWave communications, studies some of their mathematical properties and proposes their application in noncoherent schemes. Numerical results validate the performance of this novel kind of systems and confirm their strengths in both multi-user and block fading settings. LAAs that use noncoherent methods appear to be very suitable for vehicular communications and densely populated cellular networks.En los últimos tiempos, el incremento en la demanda de mayor velocidad de transmisión de datos en redes de comunicación inalámbricas ha conllevado varios problemas de implementación que solo se podrán resolver a través de un cambio total de paradigma. Utilizar bandas milimétricas del espectro es una solución muy atractiva a la escasez de recursos de radio pero, para poder extraer todo su potencial, es necesario desarrollar nuevas técnicas. La mayor parte de éstas pasa por la infraestructura Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (M-MIMO): la idea de usar matrices de antenas muy grandes para comunicaciones celulares. En esta tesis, proponemos el uso de matrices de antenas con lente, o Lens Antenna Arrays (LAA), para evitar los inasumibles costes energéticos y de instalación propios de las arquitecturas M-MIMO tradicionales. Este novedoso sistema de comunicaciones explota las capacidades de concentración de energía con dependencia angular de las lentes electromagnéticas para distinguir entre ondas con distintas direcciones de llegada y de salida, sin procesado de la señal explícito. El trabajo presentado en este documento motiva el uso de los LAAs en comunicaciones en bandas milimétricas (mmWave), estudia varias propiedades matemáticas y propone su aplicación en esquemas no coherentes. Resultados numéricos validan su ejecución y confirman sus fortalezas en entornos multiusuario y con desvanecimiento en bloque. Los LAAs que utilizan métodos no coherentes parecen ser idóneos para comunicaciones vehiculares y para redes celulares altamente pobladas.En els darrers temps, l'increment en la demanda de major velocitat de transmissió de dades en xarxes de comunicació inalàmbriques ha comportat diversos problemes d'implementació que tan sols es podran resoldre a través d'un canvi total de paradigma. Utilitzar les bandes mil·limètriques de l'espectre és una solució molt atractiva a l'escassetat de recursos de ràdio però, per tal d'extreure'n tot el seu potencial, és necessari desenvolupar noves tècniques. La majoria d'aquestes passa per la infraestructura Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (M-MIMO): la idea d'utilitzar matrius d'antenes molt grans per a comunicacions cel·lulars. En aquesta tesi, proposem l'ús de matrius d'antenes amb lent, o Lens Antenna Arrays (LAA), per tal d'evitar els inassumibles costos energètics i d'instal·lació propis d'arquitectures M-MIMO tradicionals. Aquest innovador sistema de comunicacions explota les capacitats de concentració d'energia amb dependència angular de les lents electromagnètiques per tal de distingir entre ones amb diferents direccions d'arribada i de sortida, sense processament de senyal explícit. El treball presentat en aquest document motiva l'ús dels LAAs per comunicacions en bandes mil·limètriques (mmWave), n'estudia diverses propietats matemàtiques i proposa la seva aplicació en esquemes no coherents. Resultats numèrics en validen l'execució i confirmen les seves fortaleses en entorns multi-usuari i amb esvaïment en bloc.     Hardware Development of an Ultra-Wideband System for High Precision Localization Applications

    A precise localization system in an indoor environment has been developed. The developed system is based on transmitting and receiving picosecond pulses and carrying out a complete narrow-pulse, signal detection and processing scheme in the time domain. The challenges in developing such a system include: generating ultra wideband (UWB) pulses, pulse dispersion due to antennas, modeling of complex propagation channels with severe multipath effects, need for extremely high sampling rates for digital processing, synchronization between the tag and receivers’ clocks, clock jitter, local oscillator (LO) phase noise, frequency offset between tag and receivers’ LOs, and antenna phase center variation. For such a high precision system with mm or even sub-mm accuracy, all these effects should be accounted for and minimized. In this work, we have successfully addressed many of the above challenges and developed a stand-alone system for positioning both static and dynamic targets with approximately 2 mm and 6 mm of 3-D accuracy, respectively. The results have exceeded the state of the art for any commercially available UWB positioning system and are considered a great milestone in developing such technology. My contributions include the development of a picosecond pulse generator, an extremely wideband omni-directional antenna, a highly directive UWB receiving antenna with low phase center variation, an extremely high data rate sampler, and establishment of a non-synchronized UWB system architecture. The developed low cost sampler, for example, can be easily utilized to sample narrow pulses with up to 1000 GS/s while the developed antennas can cover over 6 GHz bandwidth with minimal pulse distortion. The stand-alone prototype system is based on tracking a target using 4-6 base stations and utilizing a triangulation scheme to find its location in space. Advanced signal processing algorithms based on first peak and leading edge detection have been developed and extensively evaluated to achieve high accuracy 3-D localization. 1D, 2D and 3D experiments have been carried out and validated using an optical reference system which provides better than 0.3 mm 3-D accuracy. Such a high accuracy wireless localization system should have a great impact on the operating room of the future

    Passive Tracking System and Method

    System and methods are disclosed for passively determining the location of a moveable transmitter utilizing a pair of phase shifts at a receiver for extracting a direction vector from a receiver to the transmitter. In a preferred embodiment, a phase difference between the transmitter and receiver is extracted utilizing a noncoherent demodulator in the receiver. The receiver includes antenna array with three antenna elements, which preferably are patch antenna elements placed apart by one-half wavelength. Three receiver channels are preferably utilized for simultaneously processing the received signal from each of the three antenna elements. Multipath transmission paths for each of the three receiver channels are indexed so that comparisons of the same multipath component are made for each of the three receiver channels. The phase difference for each received signal is determined by comparing only the magnitudes of received and stored modulation signals to determine a winning modulation symbol

    Radar imaging from a spinning spacecraft

    The feasibility of imaging the surface of Venus using a synthetic aperture radar in a spin stabilized Pioneer class spacecraft operating in an eccentric orbit is studied. Imaging radar fundamentals, constraints, power requirements and data processing considerations are reviewed. Additional effects due to operation from an elliptical orbit with a spinning spacecraft are covered. Recommended spin parameters are determined by simulations. Extensions to include noncoherent integration and stereo coverage are briefly reviewed. The results indicate that resolution on the order of 100 meters can be obtained from a 0.2 eccentricity orbit using a 2 meter antenna and reasonable transmitter power levels

    Comparison of direct and heterodyne detection optical intersatellite communication links

    The performance of direct and heterodyne detection optical intersatellite communication links are evaluated and compared. It is shown that the performance of optical links is very sensitive to the pointing and tracking errors at the transmitter and receiver. In the presence of random pointing and tracking errors, optimal antenna gains exist that will minimize the required transmitter power. In addition to limiting the antenna gains, random pointing and tracking errors also impose a power penalty in the link budget. This power penalty is between 1.6 to 3 dB for a direct detection QPPM link, and 3 to 5 dB for a heterodyne QFSK system. For the heterodyne systems, the carrier phase noise presents another major factor of performance degradation that must be considered. In contrast, the loss due to synchronization error is small. The link budgets for direct and heterodyne detection systems are evaluated. It is shown that, for systems with large pointing and tracking errors, the link budget is dominated by the spatial tracking error, and the direct detection system shows a superior performance because it is less sensitive to the spatial tracking error. On the other hand, for systems with small pointing and tracking jitters, the antenna gains are in general limited by the launch cost, and suboptimal antenna gains are often used in practice. In which case, the heterodyne system has a slightly higher power margin because of higher receiver sensitivity

    Space shuttle electromagnetic environment experiment. Phase A: Definition study

    A program is discussed which develops a concept for measuring the electromagnetic environment on earth with equipment on board an orbiting space shuttle. Earlier work on spaceborne measuring experiments is reviewed, and emissions to be expected are estimated using, in part, previously gathered data. General relations among system parameters are presented, followed by a proposal on spatial and frequency scanning concepts. The methods proposed include a nadir looking measurement with small lateral scan and a circularly scanned measurement looking tangent to the earth's surface at the horizon. Antenna requirements are given, assuming frequency coverage from 400 MHz to 40 GHz. For the low frequency range, 400-1000 MHz, a processed, thinned array is proposed which will be more fully analyzed in the next phase of the program. Preliminary hardware and data processing requirements are presented

    Target localization in MIMO radar systems

    MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) radar systems employ multiple antennas to transmit multiple waveforms and engage in joint processing of the received echoes from the target. MIMO radar has been receiving increasing attention in recent years from researchers, practitioners, and funding agencies. Elements of MIMO radar have the ability to transmit diverse waveforms ranging from independent to fully correlated. MIMO radar offers a new paradigm for signal processing research. In this dissertation, target localization accuracy performance, attainable by the use of MIMO radar systems, configured with multiple transmit and receive sensors, widely distributed over an area, are studied. The Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for target localization accuracy is developed for both coherent and noncoherent processing. The CRLB is shown to be inversely proportional to the signal effective bandwidth in the noncoherent case, but is approximately inversely proportional to the carrier frequency in the coherent case. It is shown that optimization over the sensors\u27 positions lowers the CRLB by a factor equal to the product of the number of transmitting and receiving sensors. The best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) is derived for the MIMO target localization problem. The BLUE\u27s utility is in providing a closed-form localization estimate that facilitates the analysis of the relations between sensors locations, target location, and localization accuracy. Geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) contours are used to map the relative performance accuracy for a given layout of radars over a given geographic area. Coherent processing advantage for target localization relies on time and phase synchronization between transmitting and receiving radars. An analysis of the sensitivity of the localization performance with respect to the variance of phase synchronization error is provided by deriving the hybrid CRLB. The single target case is extended to the evaluation of multiple target localization performance. Thus far, the analysis assumes a stationary target. Study of moving target tracking capabilities is offered through the use of the Bayesian CRLB for the estimation of both target location and velocity. Centralized and decentralized tracking algorithms, inherit to distributed MIMO radar architecture, are proposed and evaluated. It is shown that communication requirements and processing load may be reduced at a relatively low performance cost
