    Enhancing volleyball training:empowering athletes and coaches through advanced sensing and analysis

    Modern sensing technologies and data analysis methods usher in a new era for sports training and practice. Hidden insights can be uncovered and interactive training environments can be created by means of data analysis. We present a system to support volleyball training which makes use of Inertial Measurement Units, a pressure sensitive display floor, and machine learning techniques to automatically detect relevant behaviours and provides the user with the appropriate information. While working with trainers and amateur athletes, we also explore potential applications that are driven by automatic action recognition, that contribute various requirements to the platform. The first application is an automatic video-tagging protocol that marks key events (captured on video) based on the automatic recognition of volleyball-specific actions with an unweighted average recall of 78.71% in the 10-fold cross-validation setting with convolution neural network and 73.84% in leave-one-subject-out cross-validation setting with active data representation method using wearable sensors, as an exemplification of how dashboard and retrieval systems would work with the platform. In the context of action recognition, we have evaluated statistical functions and their transformation using active data representation besides raw signal of IMUs sensor. The second application is the “bump-set-spike” trainer, which uses automatic action recognition to provide real-time feedback about performance to steer player behaviour in volleyball, as an example of rich learning environments enabled by live action detection. In addition to describing these applications, we detail the system components and architecture and discuss the implications that our system might have for sports in general and for volleyball in particular.</p

    Activity recognition in naturalistic environments using body-worn sensors

    Phd ThesisThe research presented in this thesis investigates how deep learning and feature learning can address challenges that arise for activity recognition systems in naturalistic, ecologically valid surroundings such as the private home. One of the main aims of ubiquitous computing is the development of automated recognition systems for human activities and behaviour that are sufficiently robust to be deployed in realistic, in-the-wild environments. In most cases, the targeted application scenarios are people’s daily lives, where systems have to abide by practical usability and privacy constraints. We discuss how these constraints impact data collection and analysis and demonstrate how common approaches to the analysis of movement data effectively limit the practical use of activity recognition systems in every-day surroundings. In light of these issues we develop a novel approach to the representation and modelling of movement data based on a data-driven methodology that has applications in activity recognition, behaviour imaging, and skill assessment in ubiquitous computing. A number of case studies illustrate the suitability of the proposed methods and outline how study design can be adapted to maximise the benefit of these techniques, which show promising performance for clinical applications in particular.SiDE research hu

    Decentralized and adaptive sensor data routing

    Wireless sensor network (WSN) has been attracting research efforts due to the rapidly increasing applications in military and civilian fields. An important issue in wireless sensor network is how to send information in an efficient and adaptive way. Information can be directly sent back to the base station or through a sequence of intermediate nodes. In the later case, it becomes the problem of routing. Current routing protocols can be categorized into two groups, namely table-drive (proactive) routing protocols and source-initiated on-demand (reactive) routing. For ad hoc wireless sensor network, routing protocols must deal with some unique constraints such as energy conservation, low bandwidth, high error rate and unpredictable topology, of which wired network might not possess. Thus, a routing protocol, which is energy efficient, self-adaptive and error tolerant is highly demanded. A new peer to peer (P2P) routing notion based on the theory of cellular automata has been put forward to solve this problem. We proposed two different models, namely Spin Glass (Physics) inspired model and Multi-fractal (Chemistry) inspired model. Our new routing models are distributed in computation and self-adaptive to topological disturbance. All these merits can not only save significant amount of communication and computation cost but also well adapt to the highly volatile environment of ad hoc WSN. With the cellular automata Cantor modeling tool, we implemented two dynamic link libraries (DLL) in C++ and the corresponding graphic display procedures in Tcl/tk. Results of each model’s routing ability are discussed and hopefully it will lead to new peer to peer algorithms, which can combine the advantages of current models

    Researchers in a variety of fields, including aeolian science, biology, and environmental science, have already made use of stationary and mobile remote sensing equipment to increase their variety of data collection opportunities. However, due to mobility challenges, remote sensing opportunities relevant to desert environments and in particular dune fields have been limited to stationary equipment. We describe here an investigative trip to two well-studied experimental deserts in New Mexico with D-RHex, a mobile remote sensing platform oriented towards desert research. D-RHex is the latest iteration of the RHex family of robots, which are six-legged, biologically inspired, small (10kg) platforms with good mobility in a variety of rough terrains, including on inclines and over obstacles of higher than robot hip height.     Roadmap on measurement technologies for next generation structural health monitoring systems

    Structural health monitoring (SHM) is the automation of the condition assessment process of an engineered system. When applied to geometrically large components or structures, such as those found in civil and aerospace infrastructure and systems, a critical challenge is in designing the sensing solution that could yield actionable information. This is a difficult task to conduct cost-effectively, because of the large surfaces under consideration and the localized nature of typical defects and damages. There have been significant research efforts in empowering conventional measurement technologies for applications to SHM in order to improve performance of the condition assessment process. Yet, the field implementation of these SHM solutions is still in its infancy, attributable to various economic and technical challenges. The objective of this Roadmap publication is to discuss modern measurement technologies that were developed for SHM purposes, along with their associated challenges and opportunities, and to provide a path to research and development efforts that could yield impactful field applications. The Roadmap is organized into four sections: distributed embedded sensing systems, distributed surface sensing systems, multifunctional materials, and remote sensing. Recognizing that many measurement technologies may overlap between sections, we define distributed sensing solutions as those that involve or imply the utilization of numbers of sensors geometrically organized within (embedded) or over (surface) the monitored component or system. Multi-functional materials are sensing solutions that combine multiple capabilities, for example those also serving structural functions. Remote sensing are solutions that are contactless, for example cell phones, drones, and satellites. It also includes the notion of remotely controlled robots
