Remote Access to a Prototyping Laboratory
There is a growing global demand for continuing adult higher education particularly in science and engineering subjects. New technologies are emerging which would enable the development of a Remote Access Laboratory for rapid prototyping of Artificial Intelligence, as a learning environment for mechatronic engineering, in which high precision electromechanical devices are designed to exhibit autonomous behaviour.
Secondary research investigated the learning theories for a Remote Access Laboratory, and the current practices for distance learning, involving groupware in shared activity 'collaboratories'. Having determined that the laboratory would need a multi-user interactive environment architecture, with the requirement for adaptability to rapid developments,a distributed software architecture was selected. The laboratory design was subsequently argued to be best served by Intelligent Agents in a Multi-Agent system.
The aims of the research were to establish the viability of a Remote Access Laboratory for mechatronic experimentation, and to evaluate the technologies required to implement such a laboratory environment for rapid prototyping. These were achieved by developing a novel user interface, based on a multi-functional screen layout, and a graphical specification facility to provide robotic navigation that is intuitive to use and does not require text-based programming.
The research investigated the prototyping of robotic behaviour, which used Programming by Demonstration as an innovative technique to prototype robot navigation. The method of designing behaviours met an anticipated need to allow the robot to interact with an environment, to achieve goals under conditions of uncertainty, while requiring a level of abstraction in the behaviour design. The interface structured a composite of the designed behaviours into prototype Artificial Intelligence using a hierarchical behaviour architecture, which complied with the principles of Object Orientated programming. This was subsequently a new and original programming method to facilitate rapid prototyping of Artificial Intelligence design and structuring.
Experimentation involved 20 participants attempting to accomplish a series of tasks which involved using the prototyped interface and an existing text-based robot programming system. The participants were profiled by their formal qualifications, knowledge and experience. The experimental data obtained were used to establish a comparative measure of the prototype interface success compared with an existing distance-learning, home experiment kit, in the form of a small controllable model vehicle. The data obtained provided strong evidence to support the hypothesis that a Programming by Demonstration based system for rapid prototyping is more flexible and easier to use than a previously existing distance learning text-based system. The Programming by Demonstration system showed great promise, being quicker for prototyping, and more intuitive. Context-Aware Software
With the advent of PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants), smart phones, and other forms of mobile and ubiquitous computers, our computing resources are increasingly moving off of our desktops and into our everyday lives. However, the software and user interfaces for these devices are generally very similar to that of their desktop counterparts, despite the radically different and dynamic environments that they face. We propose that to better assist their users, such devices should be able to sense, react to, and utilise, the user's current environment or context. That is, they should become context-aware. In this thesis we investigate context-awareness at three levels: user interfaces, applications, and supporting architectures/frameworks. To promote the use of context-awareness, and to aid its deployment in software, we have developed two supporting frameworks. The first is an application-oriented framework called stick-e notes. Based on an electronic version of the common Post-It Note, stick-e notes enable the attachment of any electronic resource (e.g. a text file, movie, Java program, etc.) to any type of context (e.g. location, temperature, time, etc.). The second framework we devised seeks to provide a more universal support for the capture, manipulation, and representation of context information. We call it the Context Information Service (CIS). It fills a similar role in context-aware software development as GUI libraries do in user interface development. Our applications research explored how context-awareness can be exploited in real environments with real users. In particular, we developed a suite of PDA-based context-aware tools for fieldworkers. These were used extensively by a group of ecologists in Africa to record observations of giraffe and rhinos in a remote Kenyan game reserve. These tools also provided the foundations for our HCI work, in which we developed the concept of the Minimal Attention User Interface (MAUI). The aim of the MAUI is to reduce the attention required by the user in operating a device by carefully selecting input/output modes that are harmonious to their tasks and environment. To evaluate our ideas and applications a field study was conducted in which over forty volunteers used our system for data collection activities over the course of a summer season at the Kenyan game reserve. The PDA-based tools were unanimously preferred to the paper-based alternatives, and the context-aware features were cited as particular reasons for preferring them. In summary, this thesis presents two frameworks to support context-aware software, a set of applications demonstrating how context-awareness can be utilised in the ''real world'', and a set of HCI guidelines and principles that help in creating user interfaces that fit to their context of use

Design revolutions: IASDR 2019 Conference Proceedings. Volume 4: Learning, Technology, Thinking
In September 2019 Manchester School of Art at Manchester Metropolitan University was honoured to host the bi-annual conference of the International Association of Societies of Design Research (IASDR) under the unifying theme of DESIGN REVOLUTIONS. This was the first time the conference had been held in the UK. Through key research themes across nine conference tracks – Change, Learning, Living, Making, People, Technology, Thinking, Value and Voices – the conference opened up compelling, meaningful and radical dialogue of the role of design in addressing societal and organisational challenges. RISK REDUCTION THROUGH TECHNOLOGICAL CONTROL OF PERSONAL INFORMATION
Abuse and harm to individuals, through harassment and bullying, coexist with Identity
Theft as criminal behaviours supported by the ready availability of personal information.
Incorporating privacy protection measures into software design requires a thorough
understanding about how an individual's privacy is affected by Internet technologies. This
research set out to incorporate such an understanding by examining privacy risks for two
groups of individuals, for whom privacy was an important issue, domestic abuse survivors
and teenagers. The purpose was to examine the reality of the privacy risks for these two
groups.
This research combined a number of approaches underpinned by a selection of foundation
theories from four separate domains: software engineering; information systems; social
science; and criminal behaviour. Semi-structured interviews, focus groups, workshops
and questionnaires gathered information from managers of refuges and outreach workers
from Women's Aid; representatives from probation and police domestic violence units; and
teenagers.
The findings from these first interactions provided specific examples of risks posed to the
two groups. These findings demonstrated that there was a need for a selection of
protection mechanisms that promoted awareness of the potential risk among vulnerable
individuals. Emerging from these findings were a set of concepts that formed the basis of
a novel taxonomy of threat framework designed to assist in risk assessment.
To demonstrate the crossover between understanding the social environment and the use
of technology, the taxonomy of threat was incorporated into a novel Vulnerability
Assessment Framework, which in turn provided a basis for an extension to standard
browser technology. A proof-of-concept prototype was implemented by creating an
Internet Explorer 7.0 browser helper object. The prototype also made use of the Semantic
Web protocols of Resource Description Framework and the Web Ontology Language for
simple data storage and reasoning. The purpose of this combination was to demonstrate
how the environment in which the individual primarily interacted with the Internet could be
adapted to provide awareness of the potential risk, and to enable the individual to take
steps to reduce that risk. Representatives of the user-groups were consulted for evaluation
of the acceptability of the prototype approach. The favourable ratings given by the
respondents demonstrated the acceptability of such an approach to monitoring personal
information, with the provision that control remained with the individual. The evaluation
exercise also demonstrated how the prototype would serve as a useful tool to make
individuals aware of the dangers.
The novel contribution of this research contains four facets: it advances understanding of
privacy protection for the individual; illustrates an effective combination of methodology
frameworks to address the complex issue of privacy; provides a framework for risk
assessment through the taxonomy of threat; and demonstrates the novel vulnerability
assessment framework through a proof-of-concept prototype
