    Smartphone-based vehicle telematics: a ten-year anniversary

The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this recordJust as it has irrevocably reshaped social life, the fast growth of smartphone ownership is now beginning to revolutionize the driving experience and change how we think about automotive insurance, vehicle safety systems, and traffic research. This paper summarizes the first ten years of research in smartphone-based vehicle telematics, with a focus on user-friendly implementations and the challenges that arise due to the mobility of the smartphone. Notable academic and industrial projects are reviewed, and system aspects related to sensors, energy consumption, and human-machine interfaces are examined. Moreover, we highlight the differences between traditional and smartphone-based automotive navigation, and survey the state of the art in smartphone-based transportation mode classification, vehicular ad hoc networks, cloud computing, driver classification, and road condition monitoring. Future advances are expected to be driven by improvements in sensor technology, evidence of the societal benefits of current implementations, and the establishment of industry standards for sensor fusion and driver assessment

    Quality of Information in Mobile Crowdsensing: Survey and Research Challenges

    Smartphones have become the most pervasive devices in people's lives, and are clearly transforming the way we live and perceive technology. Today's smartphones benefit from almost ubiquitous Internet connectivity and come equipped with a plethora of inexpensive yet powerful embedded sensors, such as accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone, and camera. This unique combination has enabled revolutionary applications based on the mobile crowdsensing paradigm, such as real-time road traffic monitoring, air and noise pollution, crime control, and wildlife monitoring, just to name a few. Differently from prior sensing paradigms, humans are now the primary actors of the sensing process, since they become fundamental in retrieving reliable and up-to-date information about the event being monitored. As humans may behave unreliably or maliciously, assessing and guaranteeing Quality of Information (QoI) becomes more important than ever. In this paper, we provide a new framework for defining and enforcing the QoI in mobile crowdsensing, and analyze in depth the current state-of-the-art on the topic.     Implicit personalization in driving assistance: State-of-the-art and open issues

    In recent decades, driving assistance systems have been evolving towards personalization for adapting to different drivers. With the consideration of driving preferences and driver characteristics, these systems become more acceptable and trustworthy. This article presents a survey on recent advances in implicit personalized driving assistance. We classify the collection of work into three main categories: 1) personalized Safe Driving Systems (SDS), 2) personalized Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS), and 3) personalized In-vehicle Information Systems (IVIS). For each category, we provide a comprehensive review of current applications and related techniques along with the discussion of industry status, benefits of personalization, application prospects, and future focal points. Both relevant driving datasets and open issues about personalized driving assistance are discussed to facilitate future research. By creating an organized categorization of the field, we hope that this survey could not only support future research and the development of new technologies for personalized driving assistance but also facilitate the application of these techniques within the driving automation community</h2

    Comparing algorithms for aggressive driving event detection based on vehicle motion data

    Aggressive driving is one of the main causes of fatal crashes. Correctly identifying aggressive driving events still represents a challenge in the literature. Furthermore, datasets available for testing the proposed approaches have some limitations since they generally (a) include only a few types of events, (b) contain data collected with only one device, and (c) are generated in drives that did not fully consider the variety of road characteristics and/or driving conditions. The main objective of this work is to compare the performance of several state-of-the-art algorithms for aggressive driving event detection (belonging to anomaly detection-, threshold- and machine learning-based categories) on multiple datasets containing sensors data collected with different devices (black-boxes and smartphones), on different vehicles and in different locations. A secondary objective is to verify whether smartphones could replace black-boxes in aggressive/non-aggressive classification tasks. To this aim, we propose the AD 2 (Aggressive Driving Detection) dataset, which contains (i) data collected using multiple devices to evaluate their influence on the algorithm performance, (ii) geographical data useful to analyze the context in which the events occurred, (iii) events recorded in different situations, and (iv) events generated by traveling the same path with aggressive and non-aggressive driving styles, in order to possibly separate the effects of driving style from those of road characteristics. Our experimental results highlighted the superiority of machine learning-based approaches and underlined the ability of smartphones to ensure a level of performance similar to that of black-boxes

    A Two-Level Approach to Characterizing Human Activities from Wearable Sensor Data

    International audienceThe rapid emergence of new technologies in recent decades has opened up a world of opportunities for a better understanding of human mobility and behavior. It is now possible to recognize human movements, physical activity and the environments in which they take place. And this can be done with high precision, thanks to miniature sensors integrated into our everyday devices. In this paper, we explore different methodologies for recognizing and characterizing physical activities performed by people wearing new smart devices. Whether it's smartglasses, smartwatches or smartphones, we show that each of these specialized wearables has a role to play in interpreting and monitoring moments in a user's life. In particular, we propose an approach that splits the concept of physical activity into two sub-categories that we call micro-and macro-activities. Micro-and macro-activities are supposed to have functional relationship with each other and should therefore help to better understand activities on a larger scale. Then, for each of these levels, we show different methods of collecting, interpreting and evaluating data from different sensor sources. Based on a sensing system we have developed using smart devices, we build two data sets before analyzing how to recognize such activities. Finally, we show different interactions and combinations between these scales and demonstrate that they have the potential to lead to new classes of applications, involving authentication or user profiling

    SYSTEM DYNAMICS MODELING AS A QUANTITATIVE-QUALITATIVE FRAMEWORK FOR SUSTAINABLE WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT: INSIGHTS FOR WATER QUALITY POLICY IN THE GREAT LAKES REGION

    Early water resources modeling efforts were aimed mostly at representing hydrologic processes, but the need for interdisciplinary studies has led to increasing complexity and integration of environmental, social, and economic functions. The gradual shift from merely employing engineering-based simulation models to applying more holistic frameworks is an indicator of promising changes in the traditional paradigm for the application of water resources models, supporting more sustainable management decisions. This dissertation contributes to application of a quantitative-qualitative framework for sustainable water resources management using system dynamics simulation, as well as environmental systems analysis techniques to provide insights for water quality management in the Great Lakes basin. The traditional linear thinking paradigm lacks the mental and organizational framework for sustainable development trajectories, and may lead to quick-fix solutions that fail to address key drivers of water resources problems. To facilitate holistic analysis of water resources systems, systems thinking seeks to understand interactions among the subsystems. System dynamics provides a suitable framework for operationalizing systems thinking and its application to water resources problems by offering useful qualitative tools such as causal loop diagrams (CLD), stock-and-flow diagrams (SFD), and system archetypes. The approach provides a high-level quantitative-qualitative modeling framework for big-picture understanding of water resources systems, stakeholder participation, policy analysis, and strategic decision making. While quantitative modeling using extensive computer simulations and optimization is still very important and needed for policy screening, qualitative system dynamics models can improve understanding of general trends and the root causes of problems, and thus promote sustainable water resources decision making. Within the system dynamics framework, a growth and underinvestment (G&U) system archetype governing Lake Allegan\u27s eutrophication problem was hypothesized to explain the system\u27s problematic behavior and identify policy leverage points for mitigation. A system dynamics simulation model was developed to characterize the lake\u27s recovery from its hypereutrophic state and assess a number of proposed total maximum daily load (TMDL) reduction policies, including phosphorus load reductions from point sources (PS) and non-point sources (NPS). It was shown that, for a TMDL plan to be effective, it should be considered a component of a continuous sustainability process, which considers the functionality of dynamic feedback relationships between socio-economic growth, land use change, and environmental conditions. Furthermore, a high-level simulation-optimization framework was developed to guide watershed scale BMP implementation in the Kalamazoo watershed. Agricultural BMPs should be given priority in the watershed in order to facilitate cost-efficient attainment of the Lake Allegan\u27s TP concentration target. However, without adequate support policies, agricultural BMP implementation may adversely affect the agricultural producers. Results from a case study of the Maumee River basin show that coordinated BMP implementation across upstream and downstream watersheds can significantly improve cost efficiency of TP load abatement

    Compressed Sensing in Resource-Constrained Environments: From Sensing Mechanism Design to Recovery Algorithms

    Compressed Sensing (CS) is an emerging field based on the revelation that a small collection of linear projections of a sparse signal contains enough information for reconstruction. It is promising that CS can be utilized in environments where the signal acquisition process is extremely difficult or costly, e.g., a resource-constrained environment like the smartphone platform, or a band-limited environment like visual sensor network (VSNs). There are several challenges to perform sensing due to the characteristic of these platforms, including, for example, needing active user involvement, computational and storage limitations and lower transmission capabilities. This dissertation focuses on the study of CS in resource-constrained environments. First, we try to solve the problem on how to design sensing mechanisms that could better adapt to the resource-limited smartphone platform. We propose the compressed phone sensing (CPS) framework where two challenging issues are studied, the energy drainage issue due to continuous sensing which may impede the normal functionality of the smartphones and the requirement of active user inputs for data collection that may place a high burden on the user. Second, we propose a CS reconstruction algorithm to be used in VSNs for recovery of frames/images. An efficient algorithm, NonLocal Douglas-Rachford (NLDR), is developed. NLDR takes advantage of self-similarity in images using nonlocal means (NL) filtering. We further formulate the nonlocal estimation as the low-rank matrix approximation problem and solve the constrained optimization problem using Douglas-Rachford splitting method. Third, we extend the NLDR algorithm to surveillance video processing in VSNs and propose recursive Low-rank and Sparse estimation through Douglas-Rachford splitting (rLSDR) method for recovery of the video frame into a low-rank background component and sparse component that corresponds to the moving object. The spatial and temporal low-rank features of the video frame, e.g., the nonlocal similar patches within the single video frame and the low-rank background component residing in multiple frames, are successfully exploited
