Artificial Intelligence and Systems Theory: Applied to Cooperative Robots
This paper describes an approach to the design of a population of cooperative
robots based on concepts borrowed from Systems Theory and Artificial
Intelligence. The research has been developed under the SocRob project, carried
out by the Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the Institute for Systems and
Robotics - Instituto Superior Tecnico (ISR/IST) in Lisbon. The acronym of the
project stands both for "Society of Robots" and "Soccer Robots", the case study
where we are testing our population of robots. Designing soccer robots is a
very challenging problem, where the robots must act not only to shoot a ball
towards the goal, but also to detect and avoid static (walls, stopped robots)
and dynamic (moving robots) obstacles. Furthermore, they must cooperate to
defeat an opposing team. Our past and current research in soccer robotics
includes cooperative sensor fusion for world modeling, object recognition and
tracking, robot navigation, multi-robot distributed task planning and
coordination, including cooperative reinforcement learning in cooperative and
adversarial environments, and behavior-based architectures for real time task
execution of cooperating robot teams

Object detection in robotics using morphological information
ABSTRACT: One of the most important steps in image processing systems is the detection of objects of interest. However, object detection is a challenging
task. Given an arbitrary image and assuming that we are interested in locating a particular object, the goal of object detection is to determine
whether or not there is any object of interest. This thesis is inserted in the RoboCup domain and is focused on the development of algorithms for the detection of arbitrary FIFA balls, an important object for soccer robots. To achieve the main objective, we developed three algorithms to detect arbitrary soccer balls using morphological information given by the Canny edge detector and the Hough Transform. First, it was developed an approach where we implemented a specific algorithm using the circular Hough Transform, applied after the segmentation of the acquired image.
Secondly, it was implemented an algorithm that uses a function of the OpenCV library dedicated to the search of circles in images. Finally, the two first algorithms were joined to create a new approach in which both of the algorithms are used. Experimental results are presented, showing that the developed algorithms are accurate, being capable of reliable ball detection in real-time situations
FC Portugal - High-Level Skills Within A Multi-Agent Environment
Throughout the years the RoboCup, an international competition of robotics and artificial intelligence, saw many developments and improvements in these scientific fields. This competition has different types of challenges including a 3D Simulation League that has an annual tournament of simulated soccer games played between several teams each composed of 11 simulated humanoid robots. The simulation obeys the laws of physics in order to approximate the games as much as possible to real circumstances, in addition, the rules are similar to the original soccer rules with
a few alterations and adaptations. The Portuguese team, FC Portugal 3D has been an assiduous participant in this league tournaments and was even victorious several times in the past years, nonetheless, to participate in this competition is necessary for teams to have their agents able to execute low-level skills such as walk, kick and get up. The good record of the FC Portugal 3D team comes from the fact that the methods used to train the robots keep being improved, resulting in better skills. As a manner of fact, it is considered that these low-level behaviors are at a point that is possible to shift the implementations' focus to high-level skills based on these fundamental low-level skills.
Soccer can be seen as a cooperative game where players from the same team have to work together to beat their opponents, consequently, this game is considered to be a good environment to develop, test, and apply cooperative multi-agent implementations. With this in mind, the objective of this dissertation is to construct a multi-agent setplay based on FC Portugal's low-level skills to be used in certain game situations where the main intent is to score a goal. Recently, many 3D League participants (including the Portuguese team) have been developing skills using Deep
Learning methods and obtaining successful results in a reasonable time. The approach taken on this project was to use the Reinforcement Learning algorithm PPO to train all the environments that were created to develop the intended setplay, the results of the training are present in the second-to-last chapter of this document followed by suggestions for future implementations
Holonomic control and behaviours for the CAMBADA robotic soccer team
considerando-a estática.
ABSTRACT: CAMBADA is the RoboCup Middle Size League robotic soccer team created by researchers of the ATRI group of IEETA of University of Aveiro. This thesis presents the developed contributions in holonomic motion control and high-level behaviours.
At the motion control level, several restrictions affecting holonomic motion were addressed. This is of vital importance since that given the highly dynamic environment of a soccer game it is crucial to move and position the robots efficiently in the field.
At the behaviours level, given the importance of the ball in the soccer game, and considering previous work regarding the estimation of the ball velocity, the active interception behaviour was implemented
allowing the robots to engage the ball predicting its movement rather than moving directly to it considering it static.
Given the full autonomy of the robots, their perception of the game should be as close to reality as possible. In order to supply additional information to the robot regarding the state of the game, a method to detect if it is stuck was developed.
The implemented work improved the team performance and contributed to the victory of a National Championship (Robótica’09) and a
remarkable third-place in the RoboCup 2009 in Graz, Austria
