    Un environnement formel d'assistance à la modélisation de protocoles

    The use of protocol design toolkits based on UML profiles has been hampered by the lack of methodological support. Indeed, those toolkits should include an assistant based on patterns and dedicated to driving the designer step by step through a well defined methodology. Thus, the TURTLE UML profile is extended with widely accepted service and protocol-oriented patterns. These patterns are built upon UML analysis diagrams i.e. use case, interaction overview and sequence diagrams. Moreover, all these patterns and diagrams have a formal semantics. Finally, they have been implemented in TTool, the open-source toolkit supporting TURTLE. The proposed approach remains general and may be applied to various modeling languages and use-case analysis driven processes

    Instructional Design: Toolkits for Paraprofessional Staff and Graduate Assistants

    After attending the 2012 ACRL Immersion Teacher Track Program in Burlington, Vermont, I had a greater understanding of how and why careful planning relates directly to student engagement and learning. Perhaps not quite as obvious is how instructional design (ID) corresponds to the confidence of an instructor. In order to meet the demands of our library instruction program, we rely on graduate teaching assistants and library paraprofessionals to teach the one-shot sessions requested by teaching faculty. However, these employees do not always come with teaching experience and they come from outside the library science discipline, so information literacy is many times a foreign concept. With the right tools and training, graduate teaching assistants and paraprofessional staff can confidently and effectively teach engaging lessons on not only how to use library resources but also how to critically evaluate information

    Assessing the value of 3D printed personalised products

    As end-users become more involved in personalising designs, Additive Manufacturing has become an enabler to deliver this service through the manipulation of three-dimensional designs using easy-to- use design toolkits. Consequently, end-users are able to fabricate their personalised designs through various types of AM systems. This study employs an experimental method to investigate end-users’ reflections on the value of 3D Printed personalised products based on Product Value and Experiential Value. The results suggest that end-users gave higher value to all measurements for the 3D Printed personalised products. This indicates that 3D Printed personalised products have increased perceived value when compared to standard mass-production counterparts

    Grow-Made Textiles

    This paper explores the emergent notion of the ‘grow-made’ by evaluating current work produced for Mycelium Textiles, a design research project that investigates the potential for co-making and co-designing with mycelium. Inscribed within an exploration of alternative sustainable fabrication models, this design research investigates expanded design toolkits and methods for co-making with living systems. Augmented by husbandry techniques, traditional and contemporary textile craft can inform the cultivation of living mycelium for patterning and surface embellishments. Whilst textiles are profoundly anchored in the history of humanity as material and cultural artifacts, they have so far allowed us to navigate both the hand-made and the man-made paradigms. With emergent practices in biodesign, the notion of the ‘grow-made’ is now also possible

    ABSTRACT : This paper, part of a Ph.D. in Design research, focused on discussing the role of Design Education on training future designers to be actors of change. It describes the methodology of a workshop for design students during the Design Week of Mérida, at Universidad de Extremadura – Spain. The workshop discussed the point of view of students in problem-solving, and what they believe to be the skills, methods, and partnerships for design to achieve such a change in its approach and how Design Education plays a part in preparing the future genera_on of designers to tackle social innovation and sustainability problems. The results showed how these particular group of future designers see as crucial in the given context and the possibilities for improvement on a system that struggles to be resilient and respond at a faster pace.O presente trabalho é parte do projeto de investigação para o programa de Doutoramento em Design e foca em discutir o papel do Ensino do Design na educação de futuros designers como agentes de mudança. O artigo descreve a metodologia aplicada a um workshop facilitado para alunos de design durante a Semana de Design de Mérida, na Universidad de Extremadura, em Espanha. A atividade discutiu os pontos de vista dos estudantes no tocante à resolução de problemas complexos e suas crenças sobre as habilidades, métodos e parcerias necessárias ao Design para que alcance as mudanças necessárias, para além de discutir o papel do Ensino do Design na preparação da futura geração de profissionais focados na resolução de problemas de sustentabilidade e inovação social.     VALUE CO-CREATION WITH CUSTOMERS THROUGH DESIGN TOOLKITS: THE IMPORTANCE OF PREFERENCE FIT AND PSYCHOLOGICAL OWNERSHIP

    The information technologies increasingly enable companies to set up websites for customers to design and purchase their own individualized products. Although customer co-design offer benefits for both suppliers and customers, how to manage the co-design process, especially the central interface features of design toolkit have emerged as a contentious issue among researchers and practitioners. This paper focuses on the effects of both utilitarian and psychological customer-design product value (i.e., perceived preference fit and psychological ownership) on customers’ purchase decision. Based on the self-determination theory, we propose that the effectiveness of the value increment mechanisms is influenced by three leading toolkit characteristics – the reusability of the peer-generated design solutions, design autonomy, and peer feedback, which represent three important stages in the design process, i.e., idea generation, configuration, and outcome evaluation. Laboratory experiment will be carried out to test the hypotheses. This study attempts to extend the self-determination theory to the online co-design context and to explore the value of customer-designed product through psychological ownership. It also intends to suggest pragmatic strategies for companies to improve co-design process and promote their product sale

    Developing digital literacy in construction management education: a design thinking led approach

    Alongside the digital innovations in AEC (Architectural, Engineering and Construction) practice, are calls for a new type of digital literacy, including a new information-based literacy informed by creativity, critical analysis and the theoretical and practical knowledge of the construction profession. This paper explores the role of design thinking and the promotion of abductive problem situations when developing digital literacies in construction education. The impacts of advanced digital modelling technologies on construction management practices and education are investigated before an examination of design thinking, the role of abductive reasoning and the rise of normative models of design thinking workflows. The paper then explores the role that design thinking can play in the development of new digital literacies in contemporary construction studies. A three-part framework for the implementation of a design thinking approach to construction is presented. The paper closes with a discussion of the importance of models of design thinking for learning and knowledge production, emphasising how construction management education can benefit from them

    A learning design toolkit to create pedagogically effective learning activities

    Despite the plethora of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) tools and resources available, practitioners are still not making effective use of e-learning to enrich the student experience. This article describes a learning design toolkit which guides practitioners through the process of creating pedagogically informed learning activities which make effective use of appropriate tools and resources. This work is part of a digital libraries project in which teaching staff at two universities in the UK and two in the USA are collaborating to share e-learning resources in the subject domains of Physical, Environmental and Human Geography. Finding, or creating, suitable e-learning resources and embedding them in well designed learning activities can be both challenging and time consuming. Sharing and adapting effective designs and solutions is both a stimulant and a time saver. This article describes the background to the specification of a learning activities design toolkit to support teachers as they create or adapt e-learning activities. This uses a model of pedagogical approaches as a basis for developing effective learning design plans and illustrates its use. The authors share their definition of a learning activity and taxonomies for the constituent elements. Real examples are discussed to illustrate their approach
