Excess 3 code is one of the most important codes used for efficient data storage and transmission. It is a non-weighted code and also known as self complimenting code. In this paper, a four bit optical Excess 3 to BCD code converter is proposed using electro-optic effect inside lithium-niobate based Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs). The MZI structures have powerful capability to switching an optical input signal to a desired output port. The paper constitutes a mathematical description of the proposed device and thereafter simulation using MATLAB. Design of Ultrafast All-Optical Pseudo Binary Random Sequence Generator, 4-bit Multiplier and Divider using 2 x 2 Silicon Micro-ring Resonators

All-optical devices are essential for next generation ultrafast, ultralow-power and ultrahigh bandwidth information processing systems. Silicon microring resonators (SiMRR) provide a versatile platform for all-optical switching and CMOS-compatible computing, with added advantages of high Q-factor, tunability, compactness, cascadability and scalability. A detailed theoretical analysis of ultrafast all-optical switching 2 x 2 SiMRRs has been carried out incorporating the effects of two photon absorption induced free-carrier injection and thermo optic effect. The results have been used to design simple and compact all-optical 3-bit and 4-bit pseudo-random binary sequence generators and the first reported designs of all-optical 4 x 4-bit multiplier and divider. The designs have been optimized for low-power, ultrafast operation with high modulation depth, enabling logic operations at 45 Gbps.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Advanced techniques for optical access networks based on OFDM

This Master Thesis aims to review and study the different alternatives for application of OFDM technologies to optical fibre networks and assess their potential as the basis of the next generation PON. New proposals based on predistortion circuits which alter the OFDM signal to transmit prior to optical modulation will be made and analyzed. A total of 6 different systems have been designed and their performance assessed through numerical simulations. These systems are composed by predistortion and conventional oIQ transmitters joined with Direct Detection (DD), Basic Heterodyne Coherent Detection and Conventional Homodyne Coherent Detection, (COH D) receivers. All the simulations have used the commercial software VPItransmissionMakerTM and VPIphotonicsAnalyzerTM, (VPI) in combination with Matlab coding for the OFDM coder and decoder. The performance of 6 optical OFDM transmission system scenarios is measured by running a script in TCL/TK language that allows to run a simulation sequence in which the parameters under study such as Sensitivity and Extinction Ratio (ER) were successively changed in order to obtain informative plots about the systems transmission properties

Predistortion Transmitters for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Networks

The aim of this work is to offer different alternatives for an OFDM PON networks, studying and analyzing many systems with their pros and cons and proposing news schematics for a multiuser scenario for the uplink. The systems analyzed are composed by an optical I/Q transmitter and two types of receivers, a DD and a hybrid 90Âş coherent receiver. A new technique, called predistortion, that improves the drawbacks of the conventional oIQ systems is studied. The idea to perform the multiuser scenario is shifting the user data, allowing allocation of each user in a given optical spectral band. All the simulations have been done using the commercial software VPItransmissionMakerTM and VPIphotonicsAnalyzerTM, (VPI) in combination with a code in Matlab for the OFDM coder and decoder. Also the performance of the optical OFDM systems is measured by means of a script in TCL/TK language that allows changing many parameters, in order to test and obtain results of the systems performance in terms of sensitivity vs. length for a threshold minimum quality BER value of 10-3

Distributed Fiber Ultrasonic Sensor and Pattern Recognition Analytics

Ultrasound interrogation and structural health monitoring technologies have found a wide array of applications in the health care, aerospace, automobile, and energy sectors. To achieve high spatial resolution, large array electrical transducers have been used in these applications to harness sufficient data for both monitoring and diagnoses. Electronic-based sensors have been the standard technology for ultrasonic detection, which are often expensive and cumbersome for use in large scale deployments. Fiber optical sensors have advantageous characteristics of smaller cross-sectional area, humidity-resistance, immunity to electromagnetic interference, as well as compatibility with telemetry and telecommunications applications, which make them attractive alternatives for use as ultrasonic sensors. A unique trait of fiber sensors is its ability to perform distributed acoustic measurements to achieve high spatial resolution detection using a single fiber. Using ultrafast laser direct-writing techniques, nano-reflectors can be induced inside fiber cores to drastically improve the signal-to-noise ratio of distributed fiber sensors. This dissertation explores the applications of laser-fabricated nano-reflectors in optical fiber cores for both multi-point intrinsic Fabry–Perot (FP) interferometer sensors and a distributed phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) to be used in ultrasound detection. Multi-point intrinsic FP interferometer was based on swept-frequency interferometry with optoelectronic phase-locked loop that interrogated cascaded FP cavities to obtain ultrasound patterns. The ultrasound was demodulated through reassigned short time Fourier transform incorporating with maximum-energy ridges tracking. With tens of centimeters cavity length, this approach achieved 20kHz ultrasound detection that was finesse-insensitive, noise-free, high-sensitivity and multiplex-scalability. The use of φ-OTDR with enhanced Rayleigh backscattering compensated the deficiencies of low inherent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The dynamic strain between two adjacent nano-reflectors was extracted by using 3×3 coupler demodulation within Michelson interferometer. With an improvement of over 35 dB SNR, this was adequate for the recognition of the subtle differences in signals, such as footstep of human locomotion and abnormal acoustic echoes from pipeline corrosion. With the help of artificial intelligence in pattern recognition, high accuracy of events’ identification can be achieved in perimeter security and structural health monitoring, with further potential that can be harnessed using unsurprised learning

    Programmable multifunctional integrated nanophotonics

[EN] Programmable multifunctional integrated nanophotonics (PMIN) is a new paradigm that aims at designing common integrated optical hardware configurations, which by suitable programming can implement a variety of functionalities that can be elaborated for basic or more complex operations in many application fields. The interest in PMIN is driven by the surge of a considerable number of emerging applications in the fields of telecommunications, quantum information processing, sensing and neurophotonics that will be calling for flexible, reconfigurable, low-cost, compact and low-power-consuming devices, much in the same way as how field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices operate in electronics. The success of PMIN relies on the research into suitable interconnection hardware architectures that can offer a very high spatial regularity as well as the possibility of independently setting (with a very low power consumption) the interconnection state of each connecting element. Integrated waveguide meshes provide regular and periodic geometries, formed by replicating a unit cell, which can take the form of a square, hexagon or triangle, among other configurations. Each side of the cell is formed by two integrated waveguides connected by means of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) or a tunable directional coupler that can be operated by means of an output control signal as a crossbar switch or as a variable coupler with independent power division ratio and phase shift. In this paper, we review the recent advances reported in the field of PMIN and, especially, in those based on integrated photonic waveguide meshes, both from the theoretical as well as from the experimental point of view. We pay special attention to outlining the design principles, material platforms, synthesis algorithms and practical constraints of these structures and discuss their applicability to different fields.PĂ©rez-LĂłpez, D.; Gasulla Mestre, I.; Capmany Francoy, J.
