    Electrostatic microactuators with integrated gear linkages for mechanical power transmission

    In this paper a surface micromachining process is presented which has been used to fabricate electrostatic microactuators that are interconnected with each other and linked to other movable microstructures by integrated gear linkages. The gear linkages consist of rotational and linear gear structures and the electrostatic microactuators include curved electrode actuators, comb drive actuators and axial gap wobble motors. The micromechanical structures are constructed from polysilicon. Silicon dioxide has been used as a sacrificial layer and silicon nitride was used for electrical insulation. A cyclohexane freeze drying technique is used to prevent problems with stiction. The actuators, loaded with various mechanisms, have been driven successfully by electrostatic actuation. The work is a first step towards mechanical power transmission in micromechanical system

    Affordable flexible hybrid manipulator for miniaturised product assembly

    Miniaturised assembly systems are capable of assembling parts of a few millimetres in size with an accuracy of a few micrometres. Reducing the size and the cost of such a system while increasing its flexibility and accuracy is a challenging issue. The introduction of hybrid manipulation, also called coarse/fine manipulation, within an assembly system is the solution investigated in this thesis. A micro-motion stage (MMS) is designed to be used as the fine positioning mechanism of the hybrid assembly system. MMSs often integrate compliant micro-motion stages (CMMSs) to achieve higher performances than the conventional MMSs. CMMSs are mechanisms that transmit an output force and displacement through the deformation of their structure. Although widely studied, the design and modelling techniques of these mechanisms still need to be improved and simplified. Firstly, the linear modelling of CMMSs is evaluated and two polymer prototypes are fabricated and characterised. It is found that polymer based designs have a low fabrication cost but not suitable for construction of a micro-assembly system. A simplified nonlinear model is then derived and integrated within an analytical model, allowing for the full characterisation of the CMMS in terms of stiffness and range of motion. An aluminium CMMS is fabricated based on the optimisation results from the analytical model and is integrated within an MMS. The MMS is controlled using dual-range positioning to achieve a low-cost positioning accuracy better than 2µm within a workspace of 4.4×4.4mm2. Finally, a hybrid manipulator is designed to assemble mobile-phone cameras and sensors automatically. A conventional robot manipulator is used to pick and place the parts in coarse mode while the aluminium CMMS based MMS is used for fine alignment of the parts. A high-resolution vision system is used to locate the parts on the substrate and to measure the relative position of the manipulator above MMS using a calibration grid with square patterns. The overall placement accuracy of the assembly system is ±24µm at 3σ and can reach 2µm, for a total cost of less than £50k, thus demonstrating the suitability of hybrid manipulation for desktop-size miniaturised assembly systems. The precision of the existing system could be significantly improved by making the manipulator stiffer (i.e. preloaded bearings…) and adjustable to compensate for misalignment. Further improvement could also be made on the calibration of the vision system.     Hybrid intelligent machine systems : design, modeling and control

    To further improve performances of machine systems, mechatronics offers some opportunities. Traditionally, mechatronics deals with how to integrate mechanics and electronics without a systematic approach. This thesis generalizes the concept of mechatronics into a new concept called hybrid intelligent machine system. A hybrid intelligent machine system is a system where two or more elements combine to play at least one of the roles such as sensor, actuator, or control mechanism, and contribute to the system behaviour. The common feature with the hybrid intelligent machine system is thus the presence of two or more entities responsible for the system behaviour with each having its different strength complementary to the others. The hybrid intelligent machine system is further viewed from the system’s structure, behaviour, function, and principle, which has led to the distinction of (1) the hybrid actuation system, (2) the hybrid motion system (mechanism), and (3) the hybrid control system. This thesis describes a comprehensive study on three hybrid intelligent machine systems. In the case of the hybrid actuation system, the study has developed a control method for the “true” hybrid actuation configuration in which the constant velocity motor is not “mimicked” by the servomotor which is treated in literature. In the case of the hybrid motion system, the study has resulted in a novel mechanism structure based on the compliant mechanism which allows the micro- and macro-motions to be integrated within a common framework. It should be noted that the existing designs in literature all take a serial structure for micro- and macro-motions. In the case of hybrid control system, a novel family of control laws is developed, which is primarily based on the iterative learning of the previous driving torque (as a feedforward part) and various feedback control laws. This new family of control laws is rooted in the computer-torque-control (CTC) law with an off-line learned torque in replacement of an analytically formulated torque in the forward part of the CTC law. This thesis also presents the verification of these novel developments by both simulation and experiments. Simulation studies are presented for the hybrid actuation system and the hybrid motion system while experimental studies are carried out for the hybrid control system

    Mehatronički pristup pozicioniranju ultravisokih preciznosti i točnosti

    Ultra-high precision mechatronics positioning systems are critical devices in current precision engineering and micro- and nano-systems’ technologies, as they allow repeatability and accuracy in the nanometric domain to be achieved. The doctoral thesis deals thoroughly with nonlinear stochastic frictional effects that limit the performances of ultra-high precision devices based on sliding and rolling elements. The state-of-the-art related to the frictional behavior in the pre-sliding and sliding motion regimes is considered and different friction models are validated. Due to its comprehensiveness and simplicity, the generalized Maxwell-slip (GMS) friction model is adopted to characterize frictional disturbances of a translational axis of an actual multi-degrees-of-freedom point-to-point mechatronics positioning system aimed at handling and positioning of microparts. The parameters of the GMS model are identified via innovative experimental set-ups, separately for the actuator-gearhead assembly and for the linear guideways, and included in the overall MATLAB/SIMULINK model of the used device. With the aim of compensating frictional effects, the modeled responses of the system are compared to experimental results when the system is controlled by means of a conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, when the PID controller is complemented with an additional feed-forward model-based friction compensator and, finally, when the system is controlled via a self-tuning adaptive regulator. The adaptive regulator, implemented within the real-time field programmable gate array based control system, is proven to be the most efficient and is hence used in the final repetitive point-to-point positioning tests. Nanometric-range precision and accuracy (better than 250 nm), both in the case of short-range (micrometric) and long-range (millimeter) travels, are achieved. Different sensors, actuators and other design components, along with other control typologies, are experimentally validated in ultra-high precision positioning applications as well.Mehatronički sustavi ultra-visokih (nanometarskih) preciznosti i točnosti pozicioniranja su u današnje vrijeme vrlo važni u preciznom inženjerstvu i tehnologiji mikro- i nano-sustava. U disertaciji se temeljito analiziraju nelinearni stohastički učinci trenja koji vrlo često ograničavaju radna svojstva sustava za precizno pozicioniranje temeljenih na kliznim i valjnim elementima. Analizira se stanje tehnike za pomake pri silama manjim od sile statičkog trenja, kao i u režimu klizanja, te se vrednuju postojeći matematički modeli trenja. U razmatranom slučaju mehatroničkog sustava ultra-visokih preciznosti i točnosti pozicioniranja, namijenjenog montaži i manipulaciji mikrostruktura, trenje koje se javlja kod linearnih jednoosnih pomaka se, zbog jednostavnosti i sveobuhvatnosti toga pristupa, modelira generaliziranim Maxwell-slip (GMS) modelom trenja. Parametri GMS modela se identificiraju na inovativnim eksperimentalnim postavima, i to posebno za pokretački dio analiziranog sustava, koji se sastoji od istosmjernog motora s reduktorom, te posebno za linearni translator. Rezultirajući modeli trenja se zatim integriraju u cjeloviti model sustava implementiran u MATLAB/SIMULINK okruženju. S ciljem minimizacije utjecaja trenja, modelirani odziv sustava uspoređuje se potom s eksperimentalnim rezultatima dobivenim na sustavu reguliranom pomoću često korištenog proporcionalno-integralno-diferencijalnog (PID) regulatora, kada se sustav regulira po načelu unaprijedne veze, te kada se regulira prilagodljivim upravljačkim algoritmom. Regulator s prilagodljivim vođenjem, implementiran unutar stvarno-vremenskog sustava temeljenog na programibilnim logičkim vratima, pokazao se kao najbolje rješenje te se stoga koristi u uzastopnim eksperimentima pozicioniranja iz točke u točku, koji predstavljaju željenu funkcionalnost razmatranog sustava. Postignute su tako nanometarska preciznost i točnost (bolje od 250 nm) i to kako kod kraćih (mikrometarskih), tako i duljih (milimetarskih) pomaka. U završnom se dijelu disertacije eksperimentalno analizira i mogućnost korištenja drugih pokretača, osjetnika i strojnih elemenata kao i različitih upravljačkih pristupa pogodnih za ostvarivanje ultra-visokih preciznosti i točnosti pozicioniranja

    Creative design and modelling of large-range translation compliant parallel manipulators

    Compliant parallel mechanisms/manipulators (CPMs) are parallel manipulators that transmit motion/load by deformation of their compliant members. Due to their merits such as the eliminated backlash and friction, no need for lubrication, reduced wear and noise, and monolithic configuration, they have been used in many emerging applications as scanning tables, bio-cell injectors, nano-positioners, and etc. How to design large-range CPMs is still a challenging issue. To meet the needs for large-range translational CPMs for high-precision motion stages, this thesis focuses on the systematic conceptual design and modelling of large-range translational CPMs with distributed-compliance. Firstly, several compliant parallel modules with distributed-compliance, such as spatial multi-beam modules, are identified as building blocks of translational CPMs. A normalized, nonlinear and analytical model is then derived for the spatial multi-beam modules to address the non-linearity of load-equilibrium equations. Secondly, a new design methodology for translational CPMs is presented. The main characteristic of the proposed design approach is not only to replace kinematic joints as in the literature, but also to replace kinematic chains with appropriate multiple degrees-of-freedom (DOF) compliant parallel modules. Thirdly, novel large-range translational CPMs are constructed using the proposed design methodology and identified compliant parallel modules. The proposed novel CPMs include, for example, a 1-DOF compliant parallel gripper with auto-adaptive grasping function, a stiffness-enhanced XY CPM with a spatial compliant leg, and an improved modular XYZ CPM using identical spatial double four-beam modules. Especially, the proposed XY CPM and XYZ CPM can achieve a 10mm’s motion range along each axis in the case studies. Finally, kinematostatic modelling of the proposed translational CPMs is presented to enable rapid performance characteristic analysis. The proposed analytical models are also compared with finite element analysis

    Wireless capsule endoscope for targeted drug delivery

    The diagnosis and treatment of pathologies of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are performed routinely by gastroenterologists using endoscopes and colonoscopes, however the small intestinal tract is beyond the reach of these conventional systems. Attempts have been made to access the small intestines with wireless capsule endoscopes (WCE). These pill-sized cameras take pictures of the intestinal wall and then relay them back for evaluation. This practice enables the detection and diagnosis of pathologies of the GI tract such as Crohn's disease, small intestinal tumours such as lymphoma and small intestinal cancer. The problems with these systems are that they have limited diagnostic capabilities and they do not offer the ability to perform therapy to the affected areas leaving only the options of administering large quantities of drugs or surgical intervention. To address the issue of administering therapy in the small intestinal tract this thesis presents an active swallowable microrobotic platform which has novel functionality enabling the microrobot to treat pathologies through a targeted drug delivery system. This thesis first reviews the state-of-the-art in WCE through the evaluation of current and past literature. A review of current practises such as flexible sigmoidoscopy, virtual colonoscopy and wireless capsule endoscopy are presented. The following sections review the state-of-the-art in methods of resisting peristalsis, drug targeting systems and drug delivery. A review of actuators is presented, in the context of WCE, with a view to evaluate their acceptability in adding functionality to current WCEs. The thesis presents a novel biologically-inspired holding mechanism which overcomes the issue of resisting natural peristalsis in the GI tract. An analysis of the two components of peristaltic force, circumferential and longitudinal peristaltic contractions, are presented to ensure correct functionality of the holding mechanism. A detailed analysis of the motorised method employed to deploy the expanding mechanism is described and a 5:1 scale prototype is presented which characterises the gearbox and validates the holding mechanism. The functionality of WCE is further extended by the inclusion of a novel targeting mechanism capable of delivering a metered dose of medication to a target site of interest in the GI tract. A solution to the problem of positioning a needle within a 360 degree envelope, operating the needle and safely retracting the needle in the GI tract is discussed. A comprehensive analysis of the mechanism to manoeuvre the needle is presented and validation of the mechanism is demonstrated through the evaluation of scale prototypes. Finally a drug delivery system is presented which can expel a 1 ml dose of medication, stored onboard the capsule, into the subcutaneous tissue of the GI tract wall. An analysis of the force required to expel the medication in a set period of time is presented and the design and analysis of a variable pitch conical compression spring which will be used to deliver the medication is discussed. A thermo mechanical trigger mechanism is presented which will be employed to release the compressed conical spring. Experimental results using 1:1 scale prototype parts validate the performance of the mechanisms.Open Acces

    Magneto-Rheological Actuators for Human-Safe Robots: Modeling, Control, and Implementation

    In recent years, research on physical human-robot interaction has received considerable attention. Research on this subject has led to the study of new control and actuation mechanisms for robots in order to achieve intrinsic safety. Naturally, intrinsic safety is only achievable in kinematic structures that exhibit low output impedance. Existing solutions for reducing impedance are commonly obtained at the expense of reduced performance, or significant increase in mechanical complexity. Achieving high performance while guaranteeing safety seems to be a challenging goal that necessitates new actuation technologies in future generations of human-safe robots. In this study, a novel two degrees-of-freedom safe manipulator is presented. The manipulator uses magneto-rheological fluid-based actuators. Magneto-rheological actuators offer low inertia-to-torque and mass-to-torque ratios which support their applications in human-friendly actuation. As a key element in the design of the manipulator, bi-directional actuation is attained by antagonistically coupling MR actuators at the joints. Antagonistically coupled MR actuators at the joints allow using a single motor to drive multiple joints. The motor is located at the base of the manipulator in order to further reduce the overall weight of the robot. Due to the unique characteristic of MR actuators, intrinsically safe actuation is achieved without compromising high quality actuation. Despite these advantages, modeling and control of MR actuators present some challenges. The antagonistic configuration of MR actuators may result in limit cycles in some cases when the actuator operates in the position control loop. To study the possibility of limit cycles, describing function method is employed to obtain the conditions under which limit cycles may occur in the operation of the system. Moreover, a connection between the amplitude and the frequency of the potential limit cycles and the system parameters is established to provide an insight into the design of the actuator as well as the controller. MR actuators require magnetic fields to control their output torques. The application of magnetic field however introduces hysteresis in the behaviors of MR actuators. To this effect, an adaptive model is developed to estimate the hysteretic behavior of the actuator. The effectiveness of the model is evaluated by comparing its results with those obtained using the Preisach model. These results are then extended to an adaptive control scheme in order to compensate for the effect of hysteresis. In both modeling and control, stability of proposed schemes are evaluated using Lyapunov method, and the effectiveness of the proposed methods are validated with experimental results

    Topics in Machining with Industrial Robots and Optimal Control of Vehicles

    Two main topics are considered in this thesis: Machining with industrial robots and optimal control of road-vehicles in critical maneuvers. The motivation for research on the first subject is the need for flexible and accurate production processes employing industrial robots as their main component. The challenge to overcome here is to achieve high-accuracy machining solutions, in spite of strong process forces affecting the robot end-effector. Because of the process forces, the nonlinear dynamics of the manipulator, such as the joint compliance and backlash, significantly degrade the achieved position accuracy of the machined part. In this thesis, a macro/micro manipulator configuration is considered to the purpose of increasing the position accuracy. In particular, a model-based control architecture is developed for control of the micro manipulator. The macro/micro manipulator configuration are validated by experimental results from milling tests in aluminium. The main result is that the proposed actuator configuration, combined with the control architecture proposed in this thesis, can be used for increasing the accuracy of industrial machining processes with robots. The interest for research on optimal control of road-vehicles in timecritical maneuvers is mainly driven by the desire to devise improved vehicle safety systems. Primarily, the solution of an optimal control problem for a specific cost function and model configuration can provide indication of performance limits as well as inspiration for control strategies in time-critical maneuvering situations. In this thesis, a methodology for solving this kind of problems is discussed. More specifically, vehicle and tire modeling and the optimization formulation required to get useful solutions to these problems are investigated. Simulation results are presented for different vehicle models, under varying road-surface conditions, in aggressive maneuvers, where in particular the tires are performing at their limits. The obtained results are evaluated and compared. The main conclusion here is that even simplified road-vehicle models are able to replicate behavior observed when experienced drivers are handling vehicles in time-critical maneuvers. Hence, it is plausible that the results presented in this thesis provide a basis for development of future optimization-based driver assistance technologies
