    Improvement of Stability of a Grid-Connected Inverter with an LCL filter by Robust Strong Active Damping and Model Predictive Control

    This study addresses development and implementation of robust control methods for a three-phase grid-connected voltage source inverter (VSI) accompanied by an inductive-capacitive-inductive (LCL) filter. A challenge of current control for the VSI is LCL filter resonance near to the control stability boundary, which interacts with the inverter control switching actions and creates the possibility of instability. In general, active damping is needed to stabilize the system and ensure robust performance in steady-state and dynamic responses. While many active damping methods have been proposed to resolve this issue, capacitor-current-feedback active damping has been most widely used for its simple implementation. There has been no clear consensus regarding design of a control system including capacitor-current-feedback active damping. This is due to the fact that simulation/experiment results are not congruent with the design analyses on which the control is designed. This study explains the incoherence between theory and practice when it comes to a capacitor-currents-feedback active damping system. Proposed capacitor-current-estimate active damping utilizing a developed posteriori Kalman estimator gives coherent simulation results as expected from the design analyses. This reveals that the highly oscillatory capacitor currents containing the inverter switching effects bring about uncertainty in the system performance. The switching effects are not incorporated in the analyses and control system design. Therefore, it is required to remove the switching noise from the capacitor currents in order to yield consistent results. It has been confirmed that the proportional-negative feedback of the capacitor current is equivalent to virtual impedance connected in parallel with the filter capacitor. In a digitally controlled system, the computation delay causes the equivalent resistance of the virtual impedance to become negative in the frequency range of fs/6 to fs/2, which produces a pair of open-loop unstable poles in RHP. This happens when the displaced resonance peak by active damping is in that region. Thus, an a priori Kalman estimator has been developed to generate one-sample-ahead state variable estimates to reconstruct the capacitor currents for active damping, which can compensate for the delay. The one-sample-ahead capacitor-current estimates are computed from the inverter-side and grid-side current estimates. The proposed method provides extended limits of the active damping gain that improve robustness against system parameter variation. It also allows strong active damping which can sufficiently attenuate the resonance. Grid condition is another significant factor affecting the stability of the system. In particular, a weak grid tends to provide high impedance. The system employing the proposed active damping method stably operates in a weak grid, ensuring robustness under grid impedance variation. The developed Kalman estimators offer an effective and easy way of determining the stability status of a system in addition to the functions of filtering and estimation. Stability analysis can be easily made since state variable estimates go to infinity when a system is unstable. As a promising approach, model predictive control (MPC) has been designed for the system. This study suggests that MPC including active damping can be employed for a grid-connected VSI with an LCL filter with good dynamic performance

    Mitigation of Power Quality Problems Using Custom Power Devices: A Review

    Electrical power quality (EPQ) in distribution systems is a critical issue for commercial, industrial and residential applications. The new concept of advanced power electronic based Custom Power Devices (CPDs) mainly distributed static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM), dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) and unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) have been developed due to lacking the performance of traditional compensating devices to minimize power quality disturbances. This paper presents a comprehensive review on D-STATCOM, DVR and UPQC to solve the electrical power quality problems of the distribution networks. This is intended to present a broad overview of the various possible DSTATCOM, DVR and UPQC configurations for single-phase (two wire) and three-phase (three-wire and four-wire) networks and control strategies for the compensation of various power quality disturbances. Apart from this, comprehensive explanation, comparison, and discussion on D-STATCOM, DVR, and UPQC are presented. This paper is aimed to explore a broad prospective on the status of D-STATCOMs, DVRs, and UPQCs to researchers, engineers and the community dealing with the power quality enhancement. A classified list of some latest research publications on the topic is also appended for a quick reference

    Robust PLL-Based Grid Synchronization and Frequency Monitoring

    Nowadays, the penetration of inverter-based energy resources is continuously increasing in low-voltage distribution grids. Their applications cover traditional renewable energy production and energy storage but also new applications such as charging points for electric vehicles, heat pumps, electrolyzers, etc. The power ratings range from a couple of kW to hundreds of kW. Utilities have, in the last few years, reported more challenges regarding power quality in distribution grids, e.g., high harmonic content, high unbalances, large voltage and frequency excursions, etc. Phase-Lock-Loop (PLL) algorithms are typically used for grid synchronization and decoupled control of power converters connected to the grid. Most of the research within PLLs is mainly focusing on grid voltage angle estimation while the byproducts of the algorithms, e.g., frequency and voltage magnitude, are often overlooked. However, both frequency and voltage magnitude estimations are crucial for grid code compliance. Practical considerations for implementation on microcontroller boards of these algorithms are also missing in most of the cases. The present paper proposes a modified PLL algorithm based on a Synchronous Reference Frame that is suitable for both grid synchronization and frequency monitoring, i.e., the estimation of RMS phase voltages and frequencies in highly distorted distribution grids. It also provides the tuning methodology and practical considerations for implementation on commercial DSP boards. The performance of the proposed approach is assessed through simulation studies and laboratory tests under a wide range of operational conditions, showing that the proposed PLL can estimate the grid frequency, for all considered grid events, with an accuracy of less than ±5 mHz, which is a significant improvement on the current state-of-the-art solutions, having an accuracy of at least ±20 mHz or more

    Design and Operation of Stationary Distributed Battery Micro-storage Systems

    Due to some technical and environmental constraints, expanding the current electric power generation and transmission system is being challenged by even increasing the deployment of distributed renewable generation and storage systems. Energy storage can be used to store energy from utility during low-demand (off-peak) hours and deliver this energy back to the utility during high-demand (on-peak) hours. Furthermore, energy storage can be used with renewable sources to overcome some of their limitations such as their strong dependence on the weather conditions, which cannot be perfectly predicted, and their unmatched or out-of-synchronization generation peaks with the demand peaks. Generally, energy storage enhances the performance of distributed renewable sources and increases the efficiency of the entire power system. Moreover, energy storage allows for leveling the load, shaving peak demands, and furthermore, transacting power with the utility grid. This research proposes an energy management system (EMS) to manage the operation of distributed grid-tied battery micro-storage systems for stationary applications when operated with and without renewable sources. The term micro refers to the capacity of the energy storage compared to the grid capacity. The proposed management system employs four dynamic models; economic model, battery model, and load and weather forecasting models. These models, which are the main contribution of this research, are used in order to optimally control the operation of the micro-storage system (MSS) to maximize the economic return for the end-user when operated in an electricity spot market system. Chapter 1 presents an introduction to the drawbacks of the current power system, the role of energy storage in deregulated electricity markets, limitations of renewable sources, ways for participating in spot electricity markets, and an outline of the main contributions in this dissertation. In Chapter 2, some hardware design considerations for distributed micro-storage systems as well as some economic analyses are presented. Chapters 3 and 4 propose a battery management system (BMS) that handles three main functions: battery charging, state-of-charge (SOC) estimation and state-of-health (SOH) estimation. Chapter 5 proposes load and weather forecasting models using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to develop an energy management strategy to control the operation of the MSS in a spot market system when incorporated with other renewable energy sources. Finally, conclusions and future work are presented in Chapter 6

    DFIG Based Wind Turbine System For Clemson Micro-grid

    As an important part of the smart grid, the micro-grid interfaces with distributed energy sources, loads and control devices. A doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbine (WT) is the main power source of the presented project. The DFIG system is connected to the three phase AC grid via back-to-back power converter and an LCL filter. Decoupled q-d control strategies are investigated for the DFIG system. Matlab/Simulink results will show the performance of the proposed system. Hardware validation results are also presented and discussed. As a rapidly increasing research interest area the dc micro-grid has been extensively investigated. A topology is proposed to connect the DFIG based WT system to a dc link using a diode bridge and a three phase power converter. The rotor side of the DFIG is connected to the dc link through a converter while the stator is connecting to a three phase diode bridge with the dc side connected to a dc link. The control method is developed to regulate the stator frequency and the d-q axis voltage of the diode bridge to operate the DFIG at a desired stator frequency and generate the required power. Undesired harmonics in the three phase system will lead to excessive THD, a decrease the power quality and an increase the power loss of the system. An novel methods to compensate the current harmonics by controlling the power converter of the DFIG system is also proposed. With the DFIG connected to the three phase AC gird, the focus has been put into a scenario: a nonlinear load connected to the same node of the DFIG point of common coupling (PCC) to the gird, to draw the harmonics to the system. In the proposed dc link system, the diode bridge will introduce harmonics to the stator current of the DFIG. In both cases, the selected low-order harmonics are detected and calculated by a multiple reference frame estimator. The control methods of how to regulate the harmonics are developed for both the grid-side converter and the rotor-side converter based on multiple reference frame theory. A hybrid state observer for speed-sensorless motor drives of induction machines is also proposed. The hybrid observer comprises of a Luenberger observer and a sliding mode observer. For a conventional induction motor with shorted rotor, the stator currents and rotor flux linkages are estimating following a Luenberger observer. While, for a DFIG the similar approach will apply to the stator currents and rotor currents. The rotor speed is estimated using a sliding mode observer. The combination of two observers takes advantage of both approaches. The Luenberger observer is easy to realize and the computational burden is small. The sliding mode observer is known for its robustness with respect to model parameter errors and it will also provide a fast convergence rate.     Contributions to impedance shaping control techniques for power electronic converters

    El conformado de la impedancia o admitancia mediante control para convertidores electrónicos de potencia permite alcanzar entre otros objetivos: mejora de la robustez de los controles diseñados, amortiguación de la dinámica de la tensión en caso de cambios de carga, y optimización del filtro de red y del controlador en un solo paso (co-diseño). La conformación de la impedancia debe ir siempre acompañada de un buen seguimiento de referencias. Por tanto, la idea principal es diseñar controladores con una estructura sencilla que equilibren la consecución de los objetivos marcados en cada caso. Este diseño se realiza mediante técnicas modernas, cuya resolución (síntesis del controlador) requiere de herramientas de optimización. La principal ventaja de estas técnicas sobre las clásicas, es decir, las basadas en soluciones algebraicas, es su capacidad para tratar problemas de control complejos (plantas de alto orden y/o varios objetivos) de una forma considerablemente sistemática. El primer problema de control por conformación de la impedancia consiste en reducir el sobreimpulso de tensión ante cambios de carga y minimizar el tamaño de los componentes del filtro pasivo en los convertidores DC-DC. Posteriormente, se diseñan controladores de corriente y tensión para un inversor DC-AC trifásico que logren una estabilidad robusta del sistema para una amplia variedad de filtros. La condición de estabilidad robusta menos conservadora, siendo la impedancia de la red la principal fuente de incertidumbre, es el índice de pasividad. En el caso de los controladores de corriente, el impacto de los lazos superiores en la estabilidad basada en la impedancia también se analiza mediante un índice adicional: máximo valor singular. Cada uno de los índices se aplica a un rango de frecuencias determinado. Finalmente, estas condiciones se incluyen en el diseño en un solo paso del controlador de un convertidor back-to-back utilizado para operar generadores de inducción doblemente alimentados (aerogeneradores tipo 3) presentes en algunos parques eólicos. Esta solución evita los problemas de oscilación subsíncrona, derivados de las líneas de transmisión con condensadores de compensación en serie, a los que se enfrentan estos parques eólicos. Los resultados de simulación y experimentales demuestran la eficacia y versatilidad de la propuesta.Impedance or admittance shaping by control for power electronic converters allows to achieve among other objectives: robustness enhancement of the designed controls, damped voltage dynamics in case of load changes, and grid filter and controller optimization in a single step (co-design). Impedance shaping must always be accompanied by a correct reference tracking performance. Therefore, the main idea is to design controllers with a simple structure that balance the achievement of the objectives set in each case. This design is carried out using modern techniques, whose resolution (controller synthesis) requires optimization tools. The main advantage of these techniques over the classical ones, i.e. those based on algebraic solutions, is their ability to deal with complex control problems (high order plants and/or several objectives) in a considerably systematic way. The first impedance shaping control problem is to reduce voltage overshoot under load changes and minimize the size of passive filter components in DC-DC converters. Subsequently, current and voltage controllers for a three-phase DC-AC inverter are designed to achieve robust system stability for a wide variety of filters. The least conservative robust stability condition, with grid impedance being the main source of uncertainty, is the passivity index. In the case of current controllers, the impact of higher loops on impedance-based stability is also analyzed by an additional index: maximum singular value. Each of the indices is applied to a given frequency range. Finally, these conditions are included in the one-step design of the controller of a back-to-back converter used to operate doubly fed induction generators (type-3 wind turbines) present in some wind farms. This solution avoids the sub-synchronous oscillation problems, derived from transmission lines with series compensation capacitors, faced by these wind farms.
