    FPGA implementation of online finite-set model based predictive control for power electronics

    Recently there has been an increase in the use of model based predictive control (MBPC) for power-electronic converters. MBPC allows fast and accurate control of multiple controlled variables for hybrid systems such as a power electronic converter and its load. The computational burden for this control scheme however is very high and often restrictive for a good implementation. This means that a suitable technology and design approach should be used. In this paper the implementation of finite-set MBPC (FS-MBPC) in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) is discussed. The control is fully implemented in programmable digital logic by using a high-level design tool. This allows to obtain very good performances (both in control quality, speed and hardware utilization) and have a flexible, modular control configuration. The feasibility and performance of the FPGA implementation of FS-MBPC is discussed in this paper for a 4-level flying-capacitor converter (FCC). This is an interesting application as FS-MBPC allows the simultaneous control of the output current and the capacitor voltages, yet the high number of possible switch states results in a high computational load. The good performance is obtained by exploiting the FPGA’s strong points: parallelism and pipe-lining. In the application discussed in this paper the parallel processing for the three converter phases and a fully pipelined calculation of the prediction stage allow to realize an area-time efficient implementation

    Cost-Effective Model Predictive Control Techniques for Modular Multilevel Converters

    In this thesis, model predictive control (MPC) techniques are investigated with their applications to modular multilevel converters (MMCs). Since normally a large number of submodule (SM) capacitor voltages and gate signals need to be handled in an MMC, the MPC schemes studied in this thesis are employed for determining only the voltage levels of converter arms, while gate signals are subsequently generated by the conventional sorting method. Emphasis is given to inner-loop current control in terms of phase current and circulating current, aiming at performance enhancement and computation reduction. A variable rounding level control (VRLC) approach is developed in this thesis, which is based on a modification of the conventional nearest level control (NLC) scheme: instead of the conventional nearest integer function, a proper rounding function is selected for each arm of the MMC employing the MPC method. As a result, the simplicity of the NLC is maintained while the current regulating ability is improved. The VRLC technique can also be generalized from an MPC perspective. Different current controllers can be considered to generate the arm voltage references as input of the VRLC block, thus refining the control sets of the MPC. Based on the decoupled current models, the accumulated effect of SM capacitor voltage ripples is investigated, revealing that the VRLC strategy may not achieve a proper performance if the accumulated ripple is nontrivial compared to the voltage per level. Two indexes are also proposed for quantifying the current controllability of the VRLC. Benefiting from this analysis, A SM-grouping solution is put forward to apply such MPC techniques to an MMC with a large number of SMs, leading to an equivalent operation of an MMC with much reduced number of SMs, which significantly increases the current regulating capability with reduced complexity. As an example, the SM-grouping VRLC proposal is analyzed and its system design principles are described. This thesis also develops another MPC technique which directly optimizes the cost function using quadratic programming technique. Both a rigorous and a simplified procedure are provided to solve the optimization problem. Compared with the conventional finite control set (FCS)-MPC method which evaluates all voltage level combinations, the proposed scheme presents apparent advantage in terms of calculation cost while achieving similar performance

    Design and Advanced Model Predictive Control of Wide Bandgap Based Power Converters

    The field of power electronics (PE) is experiencing a revolution by harnessing the superior technical characteristics of wide-band gap (WBG) materials, namely Silicone Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN). Semiconductor devices devised using WBG materials enable high temperature operation at reduced footprint, offer higher blocking voltages, and operate at much higher switching frequencies compared to conventional Silicon (Si) based counterpart. These characteristics are highly desirable as they allow converter designs for challenging applications such as more-electric-aircraft (MEA), electric vehicle (EV) power train, and the like. This dissertation presents designs of a WBG based power converters for a 1 MW, 1 MHz ultra-fast offboard EV charger, and 250 kW integrated modular motor drive (IMMD) for a MEA application. The goal of these designs is to demonstrate the superior power density and efficiency that are achievable by leveraging the power of SiC and GaN semiconductors. Ultra-fast EV charging is expected to alleviate the challenge of range anxiety , which is currently hindering the mass adoption of EVs in automotive market. The power converter design presented in the dissertation utilizes SiC MOSFETs embedded in a topology that is a modification of the conventional three-level (3L) active neutral-point clamped (ANPC) converter. A novel phase-shifted modulation scheme presented alongside the design allows converter operation at switching frequency of 1 MHz, thereby miniaturizing the grid-side filter to enhance the power density. IMMDs combine the power electronic drive and the electric machine into a single unit, and thus is an efficient solution to realize the electrification of aircraft. The IMMD design presented in the dissertation uses GaN devices embedded in a stacked modular full-bridge converter topology to individually drive each of the motor coils. Various issues and solutions, pertaining to paralleling of GaN devices to meet the high current requirements are also addressed in the thesis. Experimental prototypes of the SiC ultra-fast EV charger and GaN IMMD were built, and the results confirm the efficacy of the proposed designs. Model predictive control (MPC) is a nonlinear control technique that has been widely investigated for various power electronic applications in the past decade. MPC exploits the discrete nature of power converters to make control decisions using a cost function. The controller offers various advantages over, e.g., linear PI controllers in terms of fast dynamic response, identical performance at a reduced switching frequency, and ease of applicability to MIMO applications. This dissertation also investigates MPC for key power electronic applications, such as, grid-tied VSC with an LCL filter and multilevel VSI with an LC filter. By implementing high performance MPC controllers on WBG based power converters, it is possible to formulate designs capable of fast dynamic tracking, high power operation at reduced THD, and increased power density
