    Descriptive Complexity of #P Functions

    AbstractWe give a logic-based framework for defining counting problems and show that it exactly captures the problems in Valiant′s counting class #P. We study the expressive power of the framework under natural syntactic restrictions and show that some of the subclasses obtained in this way contain problems in #P with interesting computational properties. In particular, using syntactic conditions, we isolate a class of polynomial time computable #P problems and, also, a class in which every problem is approximable by a polynomial time randomized algorithm. These results set the foundation for further study of the descriptive complexity of the class #P. In contrast, we show, under reasonable complexity theoretic assumptions, that it is an undecidable problem to tell if a counting problem expressed in our framework is polynomial time computable or if it is approximable by a randomized polynomial time algorithm. Finally, we discuss some open problems which arise naturally from this work

    Descriptive complexity of #P functions : A new perspective

    We introduce a new framework for a descriptive complexity approach to arithmetic computations. We define a hierarchy of classes based on the idea of counting assignments to free function variables in first-order formulae. We completely determine the inclusion structure and show that #P and #AC0 appear as classes of this hierarchy. In this way, we unconditionally place #AC0 properly in a strict hierarchy of arithmetic classes within #P. Furthermore, we show that some of our classes admit efficient approximation in the sense of FPRAS. We compare our classes with a hierarchy within #P defined in a model-theoretic way by Saluja et al. and argue that our approach is better suited to study arithmetic circuit classes such as #AC0 which can be descriptively characterized as a class in our framework.Peer reviewe

    Descriptive Complexity, Computational Tractability, and the Logical and Cognitive Foundations of Mathematics

    In computational complexity theory, decision problems are divided into complexity classes based on the amount of computational resources it takes for algorithms to solve them. In theoretical computer science, it is commonly accepted that only functions for solving problems in the complexity class P, solvable by a deterministic Turing machine in polynomial time, are considered to be tractable. In cognitive science and philosophy, this tractability result has been used to argue that only functions in P can feasibly work as computational models of human cognitive capacities. One interesting area of computational complexity theory is descriptive complexity, which connects the expressive strength of systems of logic with the computational complexity classes. In descriptive complexity theory, it is established that only first-order (classical) systems are connected to P, or one of its subclasses. Consequently, second-order systems of logic are considered to be computationally intractable, and may therefore seem to be unfit to model human cognitive capacities. This would be problematic when we think of the role of logic as the foundations of mathematics. In order to express many important mathematical concepts and systematically prove theorems involving them, we need to have a system of logic stronger than classical first-order logic. But if such a system is considered to be intractable, it means that the logical foundation of mathematics can be prohibitively complex for human cognition. In this paper I will argue, however, that this problem is the result of an unjustified direct use of computational complexity classes in cognitive modelling. Placing my account in the recent literature on the topic, I argue that the problem can be solved by considering computational complexity for humanly relevant problem solving algorithms and input sizes.Peer reviewe

    Levels of discontinuity, limit-computability, and jump operators

    We develop a general theory of jump operators, which is intended to provide an abstraction of the notion of "limit-computability" on represented spaces. Jump operators also provide a framework with a strong categorical flavor for investigating degrees of discontinuity of functions and hierarchies of sets on represented spaces. We will provide a thorough investigation within this framework of a hierarchy of Δ20\Delta^0_2-measurable functions between arbitrary countably based T0T_0-spaces, which captures the notion of computing with ordinal mind-change bounds. Our abstract approach not only raises new questions but also sheds new light on previous results. For example, we introduce a notion of "higher order" descriptive set theoretical objects, we generalize a recent characterization of the computability theoretic notion of "lowness" in terms of adjoint functors, and we show that our framework encompasses ordinal quantifications of the non-constructiveness of Hilbert's finite basis theorem
