    No full text
International audienceThe continuous increasing needs in telemedicine and healthcare, accentuate the need of well-adapted medical alert systems. Such alert systems may be used by a variety of patients and medical actors, and should allow monitoring a wide range of medical variables. This paper proposes Tempas, a personalized temporal alert system. It facilitates customized alert configuration by using linguistic trends. The trend detection algorithm is based on data normalization, time series segmentation, and segment classification. It improves state of the art by treating irregular and regular time series in an appropriate way, thanks to the introduction of an observation variable valid time. Alert detection is enriched with quality and applicability measures. They allow a personalized tuning of the system to help reducing false negatives and false positives alert

Improving the Analyst and Decision-Maker’s Perspective through Uncertainty Visualization

This thesis constructs the Taxonomy of Uncertainty and an approach for enhancing the information in decision support systems. The hierarchical categorization of numerous causes for uncertainty defines the taxonomy, which fostered the development of a technique for visualizing uncertainty. This technique is fundamental to expressing the multi-dimensional uncertainty that can be associated with any object. By including and intuitively expressing uncertainty, the approach facilitates and enhances intuition and decision-making without undue information overload. The resulting approach for enhancing the information involves recording uncertainty, identifying the relevant items, computing and visualizing uncertainty, and providing interaction with the selection of uncertainty. A prototype embodying this approach to enhancing information by including uncertainty was used to validate these efforts. Evaluation responses of a small sample space support the thesis that the decision-maker\u27s knowledge is enhanced with enlightening information afforded by including and visualizing uncertainty, which can improve the decision-making process. Although the concept was initially conceived to help decision support system users deal with uncertainty, this methodology and these ideas can be applied to any problem where objects with many potential reasons for uncertainty are the focus of the decision-making

The Seventeenth International Conference on Software Engineering Advances (ICSEA 2022), held between October 16th and October 20th, 2022, continued a series of events covering a broad spectrum of software-related topics. The conference covered fundamentals on designing, implementing, testing, validating and maintaining various kinds of software. Several tracks were proposed to treat the topics from theory to practice, in terms of methodologies, design, implementation, testing, use cases, tools, and lessons learned. The conference topics covered classical and advanced methodologies, open source, agile software, as well as software deployment and software economics and education. Other advanced aspects are related to on-time practical aspects, such as run-time vulnerability checking, rejuvenation process, updates partial or temporary feature deprecation, software deployment and configuration, and on-line software updates. These aspects trigger implications related to patenting, licensing, engineering education, new ways for software adoption and improvement, and ultimately, to software knowledge management. There are many advanced applications requiring robust, safe, and secure software: disaster recovery applications, vehicular systems, biomedical-related software, biometrics related software, mission critical software, E-health related software, crisis-situation software. These applications require appropriate software engineering techniques, metrics and formalisms, such as, software reuse, appropriate software quality metrics, composition and integration, consistency checking, model checking, provers and reasoning. The nature of research in software varies slightly with the specific discipline researchers work in, yet there is much common ground and room for a sharing of best practice, frameworks, tools, languages and methodologies. Despite the number of experts we have available, little work is done at the meta level, that is examining how we go about our research, and how this process can be improved. There are questions related to the choice of programming language, IDEs and documentation styles and standard. Reuse can be of great benefit to research projects yet reuse of prior research projects introduces special problems that need to be mitigated. The research environment is a mix of creativity and systematic approach which leads to a creative tension that needs to be managed or at least monitored. Much of the coding in any university is undertaken by research students or young researchers. Issues of skills training, development and quality control can have significant effects on an entire department. In an industrial research setting, the environment is not quite that of industry as a whole, nor does it follow the pattern set by the university. The unique approaches and issues of industrial research may hold lessons for researchers in other domains. We take here the opportunity to warmly thank all the members of the ICSEA 2022 technical program committee, as well as all the reviewers. The creation of such a high-quality conference program would not have been possible without their involvement. We also kindly thank all the authors who dedicated much of their time and effort to contribute to ICSEA 2022. We truly believe that, thanks to all these efforts, the final conference program consisted of top-quality contributions. We also thank the members of the ICSEA 2022 organizing committee for their help in handling the logistics of this event. We hope that ICSEA 2022 was a successful international forum for the exchange of ideas and results between academia and industry and for the promotion of progress in software engineering advances

Shell nouns : in a systemic functional linguistics perspective

Tese de doutoramento, Linguística (Análise do Discurso), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Letras, 2015Shell nouns in a Systemic Functional Linguistics perspective. The aim of this thesis is to develop an account of shell nouns (Schmid, 2000) in a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) perspective. Using a parallel corpus comprising five article submissions by Portuguese academics in the field of economics and five published articles on comparable topics, the ideational, interpersonal and textual functions of shell nouns are tagged at the strata of the lexicogrammar and discourse semantics using Corpus Tool version 2.7.4 (O’Donnell, 2008). The systems networks used to tag the corpus are grounded in SFL theory. The analysis shows that shell nouns constitute an important systemic resource for the writers of research articles, who need to build an argument, positioning themselves and their study to convince the discourse community that their paper makes a contribution to knowledge in their disciplinary field. They enable a text to unfold by compacting information realised as a clause or more elsewhere in the text. Thus they can help scaffold a text through hyper-Themes, hyper-News and internal conjunction. At the stratum of the lexicogrammar, anaphorically referring nominal groups with a shell noun as Head often compose Theme, where they constitute a shared point of departure for the clause. In a decoding relational clause whose Process is realised by a verb such as reveal, confirm, or suggest, an anaphorically referring shell noun that construes Token helps to explicitly build the writer’s argument. Shell nouns that construe the field of research, such as results and findings are common in this function. Mental, linguistic and factual shell nouns contribute to construing dialogic position, and coupling between interpersonal systems and textual systems enables the writer to align the reader with certain positions and disalign with others. Although most shell nouns are not field specific, because they can project a figure that instantiates an entity, they contribute to construing field, for example instantiating entities as the object of study of the empirical research. The capacity of shell nouns to function as described above derives from their status as semiotic abstractions, which can refer to text as fact or report and are grammatical metaphors. They can be seen as lying at the intersection of modality and the logico-semantic relations of projection and expansion, brought into being by the semogenic process of nominalisation. The writers of the published articles and article submissions are found to use shell nouns in all of the functions above, but there are differences in the relative shares of the functions, which may affect reader reactions to the text

    Public Health

Public health can be thought of as a series of complex systems. Many things that individual living in high income countries take for granted like the control of infectious disease, clean, potable water, low infant mortality rates require a high functioning systems comprised of numerous actors, locations and interactions to work. Many people only notice public health when that system fails. This book explores several systems in public health including aspects of the food system, health care system and emerging issues including waste minimization in nanosilver. Several chapters address global health concerns including non-communicable disease prevention, poverty and health-longevity medicine. The book also presents several novel methodologies for better modeling and assessment of essential public health issues
