Towards Question-based Recommender Systems
Conversational and question-based recommender systems have gained increasing
attention in recent years, with users enabled to converse with the system and
better control recommendations. Nevertheless, research in the field is still
limited, compared to traditional recommender systems. In this work, we propose
a novel Question-based recommendation method, Qrec, to assist users to find
items interactively, by answering automatically constructed and algorithmically
chosen questions. Previous conversational recommender systems ask users to
express their preferences over items or item facets. Our model, instead, asks
users to express their preferences over descriptive item features. The model is
first trained offline by a novel matrix factorization algorithm, and then
iteratively updates the user and item latent factors online by a closed-form
solution based on the user answers. Meanwhile, our model infers the underlying
user belief and preferences over items to learn an optimal question-asking
strategy by using Generalized Binary Search, so as to ask a sequence of
questions to the user. Our experimental results demonstrate that our proposed
matrix factorization model outperforms the traditional Probabilistic Matrix
Factorization model. Further, our proposed Qrec model can greatly improve the
performance of state-of-the-art baselines, and it is also effective in the case
of cold-start user and item recommendations.Comment: accepted by SIGIR 202
Using Posters to Recommend Anime and Mangas in a Cold-Start Scenario
Item cold-start is a classical issue in recommender systems that affects
anime and manga recommendations as well. This problem can be framed as follows:
how to predict whether a user will like a manga that received few ratings from
the community? Content-based techniques can alleviate this issue but require
extra information, that is usually expensive to gather. In this paper, we use a
deep learning technique, Illustration2Vec, to easily extract tag information
from the manga and anime posters (e.g., sword, or ponytail). We propose BALSE
(Blended Alternate Least Squares with Explanation), a new model for
collaborative filtering, that benefits from this extra information to recommend
mangas. We show, using real data from an online manga recommender system called
Mangaki, that our model improves substantially the quality of recommendations,
especially for less-known manga, and is able to provide an interpretation of

Current Challenges and Visions in Music Recommender Systems Research
Music recommender systems (MRS) have experienced a boom in recent years,
thanks to the emergence and success of online streaming services, which
nowadays make available almost all music in the world at the user's fingertip.
While today's MRS considerably help users to find interesting music in these
huge catalogs, MRS research is still facing substantial challenges. In
particular when it comes to build, incorporate, and evaluate recommendation
strategies that integrate information beyond simple user--item interactions or
content-based descriptors, but dig deep into the very essence of listener
needs, preferences, and intentions, MRS research becomes a big endeavor and
related publications quite sparse.
The purpose of this trends and survey article is twofold. We first identify
and shed light on what we believe are the most pressing challenges MRS research
is facing, from both academic and industry perspectives. We review the state of
the art towards solving these challenges and discuss its limitations. Second,
we detail possible future directions and visions we contemplate for the further
evolution of the field. The article should therefore serve two purposes: giving
the interested reader an overview of current challenges in MRS research and
providing guidance for young researchers by identifying interesting, yet
under-researched, directions in the field
Novel Methods Using Human Emotion and Visual Features for Recommending Movies
Postponed access: the file will be accessible after 2022-06-01This master thesis investigates novel methods using human emotion as contextual information to estimate and elicit ratings when watching movie trailers. The aim is to acquire user preferences without the intrusive and time-consuming behavior of Explicit Feedback strategies, and generate quality recommendations. The proposed preference-elicitation technique is implemented as an Emotion-based Filtering technique (EF) to generate recommendations, and is evaluated against two other recommendation techniques. One Visual-based Filtering technique, using low-level visual features of movies, and one Collaborative Filtering (CF) using explicit ratings. In terms of \textit{Accuracy}, we found the Emotion-based Filtering technique (EF) to perform better than the two other filtering techniques. In terms of \textit{Diversity}, the Visual-based Filtering (VF) performed best. We further analyse the obtained data to see if movie genres tend to induce specific emotions, and the potential correlation between emotional responses of users and visual features of movie trailers. When investigating emotional responses, we found that \textit{joy} and \textit{disgust} tend to be more prominent in movie genres than other emotions. Our findings also suggest potential correlations on a per movie level. The proposed Visual-based Filtering technique can be adopted as an Implicit Feedback strategy to obtain user preferences. Discovering the Impact of Knowledge in Recommender Systems: A Comparative Study
Recommender systems engage user profiles and appropriate filtering techniques
to assist users in finding more relevant information over the large volume of
information. User profiles play an important role in the success of
recommendation process since they model and represent the actual user needs.
However, a comprehensive literature review of recommender systems has
demonstrated no concrete study on the role and impact of knowledge in user
profiling and filtering approache. In this paper, we review the most prominent
recommender systems in the literature and examine the impression of knowledge
extracted from different sources. We then come up with this finding that
semantic information from the user context has substantial impact on the
performance of knowledge based recommender systems. Finally, some new clues for

High Order Profile Expansion to tackle the new user problem on recommender systems

Collaborative Filtering algorithms provide users with recommendations based on their opinions, that is, on the ratings given by the user for some items. They are the most popular and widely implemented algorithms in Recommender Systems, especially in e-commerce, considering their good results. However, when the information is extremely sparse, independently of the domain nature, they do not present such good results. In particular, it is difficult to offer recommendations which are accurate enough to a user who has just arrived to a system or who has rated few items. This is the well-known new user problem, a type of cold-start. Profile Expansion techniques had been already presented as a method to alleviate this situation. These techniques increase the size of the user profile, by obtaining information about user tastes in distinct ways. Therefore, recommender algorithms have more information at their disposal, and results improve. In this paper, we present the High Order Profile Expansion techniques, which combine in different ways the Profile Expansion methods. Tourist experiences recommender system based on emotion recognition with wearable data
The collection of physiological data from people has been facilitated due to the mass use of cheap wearable devices. Although the accuracy is low compared to specialized healthcare devices, these can be widely applied in other contexts. This study proposes the architecture for a tourist experiences recommender system (TERS) based on the user’s emotional states who wear these devices. The issue lies in detecting emotion from Heart Rate (HR) measurements obtained from these wearables. Unlike most state-of-the-art studies, which have elicited emotions in controlled experiments and with high-accuracy sensors, this research’s challenge consisted of emotion recognition (ER) in the daily life context of users based on the gathering of HR data. Furthermore, an objective was to generate the tourist recommendation considering the emotional state of the device wearer. The method used comprises three main phases: The first was the collection of HR measurements and labeling emotions through mobile applications. The second was emotional detection using deep learning algorithms. The final phase was the design and validation of the TERS-ER. In this way, a dataset of HR measurements labeled with emotions was obtained as results. Among the different algorithms tested for ER, the hybrid model of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks had promising results. Moreover, concerning TERS, Collaborative Filtering (CF) using CNN showed better performance.This research was financially supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology,
