    Imagining machine vision: Four visual registers from the Chinese AI industry

    Machine vision is one of the main applications of artificial intelligence. In China, the machine vision industry makes up more than a third of the national AI market, and technologies like face recognition, object tracking and automated driving play a central role in surveillance systems and social governance projects relying on the large-scale collection and processing of sensor data. Like other novel articulations of technology and society, machine vision is defined, developed and explained by different actors through the work of imagination. In this article, we draw on the concept of sociotechnical imaginaries to understand how Chinese companies represent machine vision. Through a qualitative multimodal analysis of the corporate websites of leading industry players, we identify a cohesive sociotechnical imaginary of machine vision, and explain how four distinct visual registers contribute to its articulation. These four registers, which we call computational abstraction, human–machine coordination, smooth everyday, and dashboard realism, allow Chinese tech companies to articulate their global ambitions and competitiveness through narrow and opaque representations of machine vision technologies.publishedVersio

    The number of scientific studies that consider possible applications of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPASs) for the management of natural hazards effects and the identification of occurred damages strongly increased in the last decade. Nowadays, in the scientific community, the use of these systems is not a novelty, but a deeper analysis of the literature shows a lack of codified complex methodologies that can be used not only for scientific experiments but also for normal codified emergency operations. RPASs can acquire on-demand ultra-high-resolution images that can be used for the identification of active processes such as landslides or volcanic activities but can also define the effects of earthquakes, wildfires and floods.     A Human-Centric Approach to Data Fusion in Post-Disaster Managment: The Development of a Fuzzy Set Theory Based Model

    It is critical to provide an efficient and accurate information system in the post-disaster phase for individuals\u27 in order to access and obtain the necessary resources in a timely manner; but current map based post-disaster management systems provide all emergency resource lists without filtering them which usually leads to high levels of energy consumed in calculation. Also an effective post-disaster management system (PDMS) will result in distribution of all emergency resources such as, hospital, storage and transportation much more reasonably and be more beneficial to the individuals in the post disaster period. In this Dissertation, firstly, semi-supervised learning (SSL) based graph systems was constructed for PDMS. A Graph-based PDMS\u27 resource map was converted to a directed graph that presented by adjacent matrix and then the decision information will be conducted from the PDMS by two ways, one is clustering operation, and another is graph-based semi-supervised optimization process. In this study, PDMS was applied for emergency resource distribution in post-disaster (responses phase), a path optimization algorithm based ant colony optimization (ACO) was used for minimizing the cost in post-disaster, simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. This analysis was done by comparing it with clustering based algorithms under improvement ACO of tour improvement algorithm (TIA) and Min-Max Ant System (MMAS) and the results also show that the SSL based graph will be more effective for calculating the optimization path in PDMS. This research improved the map by combining the disaster map with the initial GIS based map which located the target area considering the influence of disaster. First, all initial map and disaster map will be under Gaussian transformation while we acquired the histogram of all map pictures. And then all pictures will be under discrete wavelet transform (DWT), a Gaussian fusion algorithm was applied in the DWT pictures. Second, inverse DWT (iDWT) was applied to generate a new map for a post-disaster management system. Finally, simulation works were proposed and the results showed the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing it to other fusion algorithms, such as mean-mean fusion and max-UD fusion through the evaluation indices including entropy, spatial frequency (SF) and image quality index (IQI).     A Map-algebra-inspired Approach for Interacting With Wireless Sensor Networks, Cyber-physical Systems or Internet of Things

    The typical approach for consuming data from wireless sensor networks (WSN) and Internet of Things (IoT) has been to send data back to central servers for processing and analysis. This thesis develops an alternative strategy for processing and acting on data directly in the environment referred to as Active embedded Map Algebra (AeMA). Active refers to the near real time production of data, and embedded refers to the architecture of distributed embedded sensor nodes. Network macroprogramming, a style of programming adopted for wireless sensor networks and IoT, addresses the challenges of coordinating the behavior of multiple connected devices through a high-level programming model. Several macroprogramming models have been proposed, but none to date has adopted a comprehensive spatial model. This thesis takes the unique approach of adapting the well-known Map Algebra model from Geographic Information Science to extend the functionality of WSN/IoT and the opportunities for user interaction with WSN/IoT. As an inherently spatial model, the Map Algebra-inspired metaphor supports the types of computation desired from a network of geographically dispersed WSN nodes. The AeMA data model aligns with the conceptual model of GIS layers and specific layer operations from Map Algebra. A declarative query and network tasking language, based on Map Algebra operations, provides the basis for operations and interactions. The model adds functionality to calculate and store time series and specific temporal summary-type composite objects as an extension to traditional Map Algebra. The AeMA encodes Map Algebra-inspired operations into an extensible Virtual Machine Runtime system, called MARS (Map Algebra Runtime System) that supports Map Algebra in an efficient and extensible way. Map algebra-like operations are performed in a distributed manner. Data do not leave the network but are analyzed and consumed in place. As a consequence, collected information is available in-situ to drive local actions. The conceptual model and tasking language are designed to direct nodes as active entities, able to perform some actions on their environment. This Map Algebra inspired network macroprogramming model has many potential applications for spatially deployed WSN/IoT networks. In particular the thesis notes its utility for precision agriculture applications
