    EldyIoT: IoT assistive system for elderly

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most promising technologies for the near future. IoT has penetrated many industries such as smart cities, smart homes, smart cars, healthcare, agriculture and manufacturing. In the health sector, the number of use cases has increased as a consequence of the improvement in the quality and effectiveness of the provision of hospital and care services. This work presents a solution to reduce the distance between caregivers and patients in a non-intrusive way, allowing information about the health status and mobility of patients to be available and accessible anywhere, anytime. Consecutively, it will increase the confidence of caregivers in relation to the health status of monitored patients and, on the other hand, it will increase the confidence of patients that their health status is being monitored frequently. Thus, this thesis presents a framework for physical monitoring of elderly people based on smartwatch devices. As an integral part of the solution, we present a cross-platform mobile application and a software framework assembled to support the processes of collecting, processing, storing, displaying and analyzing data.A Internet das Coisas (IoT) é uma das tecnologias mais promissoras para o futuro próximo. A IoT penetrou em muitos setores, como cidades inteligentes, casas inteligentes, carros inteligentes, saúde, agricultura e manufatura. No sector da saúde, o número de casos de uso, tem aumentado como consequência do incremento na qualidade e eficácia na prestação de serviços hospitalares e de cuidados. Este trabalho, apresenta uma solução para reduzir a distância entre cuidadores e pacientes de forma não intrusiva, permitindo que informações sobre o estado de saúde e mobilidade dos pacientes estejam disponíveis e acessíveis em qualquer lugar, e a qualquer hora. Consecutivamente, aumentará a confiança dos cuidadores em relação ao estado de saúde dos pacientes acompanhados e, por outro lado, aumentará a confiança dos pacientes de que o seu estado de saúde está a ser monitorizado com frequência. Assim, esta tese apresenta um framework para monitorização física de idosos baseada em dispositivos smartwatch.     Application of neuroergonomics in the industrial design of mining equipment.

    Neuroergonomics is an interdisciplinary field merging neuroscience and ergonomics to optimize performance. In order to design an optimal user interface, we must understand the cognitive processing involved. Traditional methodology incorporates self-assessment from the user. This dissertation examines the use of neurophysiological techniques in quantifying the cognitive processing involved in allocating cognitive resources. Attentional resources, cognitive processing, memory and visual scanning are examined to test the ecological validity of theoretical laboratory settings and how they translate to real life settings. By incorporating a non-invasive measurement technique, such as the quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG), we are able to examine connectivity patterns in the brain during operation and discern whether or not a user has obtained expert status.     Researchers claim that aesthetic qualities of Formal Learning Visual Environments (FL YEs) have a persuasive role in intensifying learning motivation. Unfortunately, designers seem to overlook the necessity of aesthetic designing of FL YEs that could sustain Learners' Learning Motivation (LLM). The existing literature on aesthetic designing of FL YEs primarily focuses upon environment perspective and users' perspective. The existing studies, however, do not take into account, Learners' Aesthetic Perceptions (LAPs) in Informal Visual Environments (!YEs) which may also influence upon LLM. Recent research in this domain suggests that IVEs are producing learners' with a new profile of cognitive skills, such as visual-spatial intelligence and enhanced aesthetic perceptions. It is thus argued that LAPs formed in IVEs may result in establishment of new schemas (set of aesthetic expectations) and make learners' perceptually selective in judging aesthetics

    The research activity I am presenting in this thesis lies within the framework of a cooperation between the University of Cagliari (Applied Mechanics and Robotics lab, headed by professor Andrea Manuello Bertetto, and the research group of physicians referencing to professor Alberto Concu at the Laboratory of Sports Physiology, Department of Medical Sciences), and the Polytechnic of Turin (professor Carlo Ferraresi and his equipe at the Group of Automation and Robotics, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) This research was also funded by the Italian Ministry of Research (MIUR – PRIN 2009). My activity has been mainly carried on at the Department of Mechanics, Robotics lab under the supervision of prof. Manuello; I have also spent one year at the Control Lab of the School of Electrical Engineering at Aalto University (Helsinki, Finland). The tests on the patients were taken at the Laboratory of Sports Physiology, Cagliari. I will be describing the design, development and testing of some soft pneumatic flexible devices meant to apply an intermittent massage and to restore blood circulation in lower limbs in order to improve cardiac output and wellness in general. The choice of the actuators, as well as the pneumatic circuits and air distribution system and PLC control patterns will be outlined. The trial run of the devices have been field--‐tested as soon a prototype was ready, so as to tune its features step--‐by--‐ step. I am also giving a characterization of a commercial thin force sensor after briefly reviewing some other type of thin pressure transducer. It has been used to gauge the contact pressure between the actuator and the subject’s skin in order to correlate the level of discomfort to the supply pressure, and to feed this value back to regulate the supply air flow. In order for the massage to be still effective without causing pain or distress or any cutoff to the blood flow, some control objective have been set, consisting in the regulation of the contact force so that it comes to the constant set point smoothly and its value holds constant until unloading occurs. The targets of such mechatronic devices range from paraplegic patients lacking of muscle tone because of their spinal cord damage, to elite endurance athletes needing a circulation booster when resting from practicing after serious injuries leading to bed rest. Encouraging results have been attained for both these two categories, based on the monitored hemodynamic variables

    Perception and Orientation in Minimally Invasive Surgery

    During the last two decades, we have seen a revolution in the way that we perform abdominal surgery with increased reliance on minimally invasive techniques. This paradigm shift has come at a rapid pace, with laparoscopic surgery now representing the gold standard for many surgical procedures and further minimisation of invasiveness being seen with the recent clinical introduction of novel techniques such as single-incision laparoscopic surgery and natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery. Despite the obvious benefits conferred on the patient in terms of morbidity, length of hospital stay and post-operative pain, this paradigm shift comes at a significantly higher demand on the surgeon, in terms of both perception and manual dexterity. The issues involved include degradation of sensory input to the operator compared to conventional open surgery owing to a loss of three-dimensional vision through the use of the two-dimensional operative interface, and decreased haptic feedback from the instruments. These changes have led to a much higher cognitive load on the surgeon and a greater risk of operator disorientation leading to potential surgical errors. This thesis represents a detailed investigation of disorientation in minimally invasive surgery. In this thesis, eye tracking methodology is identified as the method of choice for evaluating behavioural patterns during orientation. An analysis framework is proposed to profile orientation behaviour using eye tracking data validated in a laboratory model. This framework is used to characterise and quantify successful orientation strategies at critical stages of laparoscopic cholecystectomy and furthermore use these strategies to prove that focused teaching of this behaviour in novices can significantly increase performance in this task. Orientation strategies are then characterised for common clinical scenarios in natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery and the concept of image saliency is introduced to further investigate the importance of specific visual cues associated with effective orientation. Profiling of behavioural patterns is related to performance in orientation and implications on education and construction of smart surgical robots are drawn. Finally, a method for potentially decreasing operator disorientation is investigated in the form of endoscopic horizon stabilization in a simulated operative model for transgastric surgery. The major original contributions of this thesis include: Validation of a profiling methodology/framework to characterise orientation behaviour Identification of high performance orientation strategies in specific clinical scenarios including laparoscopic cholecystectomy and natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery Evaluation of the efficacy of teaching orientation strategies Evaluation of automatic endoscopic horizon stabilization in natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery The impact of the results presented in this thesis, as well as the potential for further high impact research is discussed in the context of both eye tracking as an evaluation tool in minimally invasive surgery as well as implementation of means to combat operator disorientation in a surgical platform. The work also provides further insight into the practical implementation of computer-assistance and technological innovation in future flexible access surgical platforms

Existen diversos métodos para combatir este problema, como porejemplo los sistemas de ¿transcoding¿, que transforman automáticamente páginas web inaccesibles enaccesibles. Para mejorar la accesibilidad web a grupos específicos de personas, estos métodos requiereninformación sobre las técnicas de adaptación más adecuadas que deben aplicarse.En esta tesis se han realizado una serie de estudios sobre la idoneidad de diversas técnicas de adaptaciónpara mejorar la navegación web para dos grupos diferentes de personas con discapacidad: personas conmovilidad reducida en miembros superiores y personas con baja visión. Basado en revisionesbibliográficas y estudios observacionales, se han desarrollado diferentes adaptaciones de interfaces web ytécnicas alternativas de interacción, que posteriormente han sido evaluadas a lo largo de varios estudioscon usuarios con necesidades especiales. Mediante análisis cualitativos y cuantitativos del rendimiento yla satisfacción de los participantes, se han evaluado diversas adaptaciones de interfaz y métodosalternativos de interacción. Los resultados han demostrado que las técnicas probadas mejoran el acceso ala Web y que los beneficios varían según la tecnología asistiva usada para acceder al ordenador

    Digitization of the work environment for sustainable production

    Global pandemics, devastating wars and natural disasters with increasing frequency and impact are disrupting previously carefully balanced manufacturing networks. All industrial companies are required to examine their operations and adjust accordingly. The increasing cost of resources require enterprises to re-design their value creation processes to be more sustainable, to optimize the supplier network to become more resilient and to accelerate digitizing of operations to enhance operational effectiveness. This year's WGAB research seminar is themed around Digitization of the work environment for sustainable production and seeks to contribute solutions to the current challenges. The scientific discourse aims to advance the sustainable and data-based organization of value creation processes. Exemplary efforts for the sustainable production of 3D printed footwear and the circular supply chain of energy production will be discussed. With advances in sensory data collection in cyber-physical production systems (CPPS), there are new opportunities for sensing the status of manufacturing systems, which enable advanced data analytics to contribute to a sustainable production. Intelligent processes enable sustainable value creation and bi-directional knowledge exchange between humans and machines. With people at the centre of the CPPS, production systems shall be both adaptive and personalized for every worker. People need to be involved in the technological and organizational changes. Simulating the migration from a linear economy to a circular economy supports the trend of regionalized production networks. Digital assistance systems are tested to back up resilient manufacturing.
