Generalized linear-in-parameter models : theory and audio signal processing applications
This thesis presents a mathematically oriented perspective to some basic concepts of digital signal processing. A general framework for the development of alternative signal and system representations is attained by defining a generalized linear-in-parameter model (GLM) configuration. The GLM provides a direct view into the origins of many familiar methods in signal processing, implying a variety of generalizations, and it serves as a natural introduction to rational orthonormal model structures. In particular, the conventional division between finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) filtering methods is reconsidered. The latter part of the thesis consists of audio oriented case studies, including loudspeaker equalization, musical instrument body modeling, and room response modeling. The proposed collection of IIR filter design techniques is submitted to challenging modeling tasks. The most important practical contribution of this thesis is the introduction of a procedure for the optimization of rational orthonormal filter structures, called the BU-method. More generally, the BU-method and its variants, including the (complex) warped extension, the (C)WBU-method, can be consider as entirely new IIR filter design strategies.reviewe
Harvesting time-frequency-space diversity with coded modulation for underwater acoustic communications
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2009.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 172-180).The goal of this thesis is to design a low-complexity, high data-rate acoustic communications system with robust performance under various channel conditions. The need for robust performance emerges because underwater acoustic (UWA) channels have time-varying statistics, thus a coded modulation scheme optimally designed for a specific channel model will be suboptimal when the channel statistics change. A robust approach should use a coded modulation scheme that provides good performance in both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channels (and, consequently in the Rice fading channel, an intermediate channel model between the latter two). Hence, high data-rate coded modulation schemes should exhibit both large free Euclidean and Hamming distances. In addition, coded modulation is regarded as a way to achieve time diversity over interleaved flat fading channels. UWA channels offer additional diversity gains in both frequency and space; therefore a system that exploits diversity in all three domains is highly desirable. Two systems with the same bit-rate and complexity but different free Euclidean and Hamming distances are designed and compared. The first system combines Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) based on an 8-PSK signal set, symbol interleaving and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). The second system combines bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM), based on a convolutional code and a 16-QAM signal set, with OFDM.(cont.) Both systems are combined with specific space-time block codes (STBC) when two or three transmit antennas are used. Moreover, pilot-symbol-aided channel estimation is performed by using a robust 2-D Wiener filter, which copes with channel model mismatch by employing appropriate time and frequency correlation functions. The following result was obtained by testing the aforementioned systems using both simulated and experimental data from RACE '08: the BICM scheme performs better when the UWA channel exhibits limited spatial diversity. This result implies that coded modulation schemes emphasizing higher Hamming distances are preferred when there is no option for many receive/transmit hydrophones. The TCM scheme, on the other hand, becomes a better choice when the UWA channel demonstrates a high spatial diversity order. This result implies that coded modulation schemes emphasizing higher free Euclidean distances are preferred when multiple receive/transmit hydrophones are deployed.by Konstantinos Pelekanakis.Ph.D

Modelling and control of united power flow controller for reinforcement of transmission systems
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. The work involved in the thesis is concentrated on modelling and control of UPFC. The overall objective is to provide effective methods and tools for assessing the impact of UPFC in the reinforcement of transmission systems. The thesis clarifies modelling and control of UPFC into several subproblems, in which the associated models, algorithms and control strategies of UPFC have been systematically reviewed. An electromagnetic transient prototype model of the UPFC has been set up by using its detailed power electronic device as well as its internal closed-loop controller. The problems encountered in the process of building such a model and the way of handling them by EMTP have been discussed. This EMTP-based simulator of SPWM UPFC implemented has provided a useful tool to assist the development and validation of more detailed and practical model of the UPFC for further studies.
The steady-state modelling and control for the UPFC has been developed, including: (i) The power injection model of the UPFC suitable for its implementation in an optimal multiplier power flow computation method has been derived in rectangular form. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been compared with the user defined model method. (ii) A systematic method for deriving the control capabilities of the UPFC has been proposed based on predicting the feasibility limit of the system. Using an index derived from optimal multiplier, three dimensional diagrams describing the ranges have been obtained. The results are also verified through the singular value decomposition algorithm. (iii) A power injection model based control method (PIM) has been proposed and implemented to directly derive the UPFC parameters as so to achieve the control objectives. The assumptions, algorithmic process and validation of the PIM have been investigated in detail. Its pros and cons are also discussed. (iv) Five internal limits of the UPFC device have been derived as the constraints to its performance. A complete set of control rules considering these limits as well as their implementation in the PlM have been constructed to form the basis of optimal UPFC control strategies for its steady-state local control. All the above proposed methods are tested and validated on the IEEE 30-bus system, a practical 306-bus system and a meshed network. The thesis concludes by suggesting the future research areas in further UPFC studies
The metaRbolomics Toolbox in Bioconductor and beyond
Metabolomics aims to measure and characterise the complex composition of metabolites in a biological system. Metabolomics studies involve sophisticated analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and generate large amounts of high-dimensional and complex experimental data. Open source processing and analysis tools are of major interest in light of innovative, open and reproducible science. The scientific community has developed a wide range of open source software, providing freely available advanced processing and analysis approaches. The programming and statistics environment R has emerged as one of the most popular environments to process and analyse Metabolomics datasets. A major benefit of such an environment is the possibility of connecting different tools into more complex workflows. Combining reusable data processing R scripts with the experimental data thus allows for open, reproducible research. This review provides an extensive overview of existing packages in R for different steps in a typical computational metabolomics workflow, including data processing, biostatistics, metabolite annotation and identification, and biochemical network and pathway analysis. Multifunctional workflows, possible user interfaces and integration into workflow management systems are also reviewed. In total, this review summarises more than two hundred metabolomics specific packages primarily available on CRAN, Bioconductor and GitHub
Modeling, image processing and attitude estimation of high speed star sensors
Attitude estimation and angular velocity estimation are the most critical components
of a spacecraft's guidance, navigation and control. Usually, an array of tightlycoupled
sensors (star trackers, gyroscopes, sun sensors, magnetometers) is used to
estimate these quantities. The cost (financial, mass, power, time, human resources)
for the integration of these separate sub-systems is a major deterrent towards realizing
the goal of smaller, cheaper and faster to launch spacecrafts/satellites. In this
work, we present a novel stellar imaging system that is capable of estimating attitude
and angular velocities at true update rates of greater than 100Hz, thereby eliminating
the need for a separate star tracker and gyroscope sub-systems.
High image acquisition rates necessitate short integration times and large optical
apertures, thereby adding mass and volume to the sensor. The proposed high
speed sensor overcomes these difficulties by employing light amplification technologies
coupled with fiber optics. To better understand the performance of the sensor, an
electro-optical model of the sensor system is developed which is then used to design
a high-fidelity night sky image simulator. Novel star position estimation algorithms
based on a two-dimensional Gaussian fitting to the star pixel intensity profiles are
then presented. These algorithms are non-iterative, perform local background estimation
in the vicinity of the star and lead to significant improvements in the star
centroid determination. Further, a new attitude determination algorithm is developed that uses the inter-star angles of the identified stars as constraints to recompute
the body measured vectors and provide a higher accuracy estimate of the attitude
as compared to existing methods. The spectral response of the sensor is then used
to develop a star catalog generation method that results in a compact on-board star
catalog. Finally, the use of a fiber optic faceplate is proposed as an additional means
of stray light mitigation for the system. This dissertation serves to validate the conceptual
design of the high update rate star sensor through analysis, hardware design,
algorithm development and experimental testing

Topics in Magnetohydrodynamics
To understand plasma physics intuitively one need to master the MHD behaviors. As sciences advance, gap between published textbooks and cutting-edge researches gradually develops. Connection from textbook knowledge to up-to-dated research results can often be tough. Review articles can help. This book contains eight topical review papers on MHD. For magnetically confined fusion one can find toroidal MHD theory for tokamaks, magnetic relaxation process in spheromaks, and the formation and stability of field-reversed configuration. In space plasma physics one can get solar spicules and X-ray jets physics, as well as general sub-fluid theory. For numerical methods one can find the implicit numerical methods for resistive MHD and the boundary control formalism. For low temperature plasma physics one can read theory for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids etc
