MEDAL: An AI-Driven Data Fabric Concept for Elastic Cloud-to-Edge Intelligence
Current Cloud solutions for Edge Computing are inefficient for data-centric
applications, as they focus on the IaaS/PaaS level and they miss the data
modeling and operations perspective. Consequently, Edge Computing opportunities
are lost due to cumbersome and data assets-agnostic processes for end-to-end
deployment over the Cloud-to-Edge continuum. In this paper, we introduce MEDAL,
an intelligent Cloud-to-Edge Data Fabric to support Data Operations
(DataOps)across the continuum and to automate management and orchestration
operations over a combined view of the data and the resource layer. MEDAL
facilitates building and managing data workflows on top of existing flexible
and composable data services, seamlessly exploiting and federating
IaaS/PaaS/SaaS resources across different Cloud and Edge environments. We
describe the MEDAL Platform as a usable tool for Data Scientists and Engineers,
encompassing our concept and we illustrate its application though a connected

A reference architecture for cloud-edge meta-operating systems enabling cross-domain, data-intensive, ML-assisted applications: architectural overview and key concepts
Future data-intensive intelligent applications are required to traverse across the cloudto-edge-to-IoT continuum, where cloud and edge resources elegantly coordinate, alongside sensor networks and data. However, current technical solutions can only partially handle the data outburst associated with the IoT proliferation experienced in recent years, mainly due to their hierarchical architectures. In this context, this paper presents a reference architecture of a meta-operating system (RAMOS), targeted to enable a dynamic, distributed and trusted continuum which will be capable of facilitating the next-generation smart applications at the edge. RAMOS is domain-agnostic, capable of supporting heterogeneous devices in various network environments. Furthermore, the proposed architecture possesses the ability to place the data at the origin in a secure and trusted manner. Based on a layered structure, the building blocks of RAMOS are thoroughly described, and the interconnection and coordination between them is fully presented. Furthermore, illustration of how the proposed reference architecture and its characteristics could fit in potential key industrial and societal applications, which in the future will require more power at the edge, is provided in five practical scenarios, focusing on the distributed intelligence and privacy preservation principles promoted by RAMOS, as well as the concept of environmental footprint minimization. Finally, the business potential of an open edge ecosystem and the societal impacts of climate net neutrality are also illustrated. For UPC authors: this research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and FEDER, grant number PID2021-124463OB-100.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Autonomy and Intelligence in the Computing Continuum: Challenges, Enablers, and Future Directions for Orchestration
Future AI applications require performance, reliability and privacy that the
existing, cloud-dependant system architectures cannot provide. In this article,
we study orchestration in the device-edge-cloud continuum, and focus on AI for
edge, that is, the AI methods used in resource orchestration. We claim that to
support the constantly growing requirements of intelligent applications in the
device-edge-cloud computing continuum, resource orchestration needs to embrace
edge AI and emphasize local autonomy and intelligence. To justify the claim, we
provide a general definition for continuum orchestration, and look at how
current and emerging orchestration paradigms are suitable for the computing
continuum. We describe certain major emerging research themes that may affect
future orchestration, and provide an early vision of an orchestration paradigm
that embraces those research themes. Finally, we survey current key edge AI
methods and look at how they may contribute into fulfilling the vision of
future continuum orchestration.Comment: 50 pages, 8 figures (Revised content in all sections, added figures

Secure data sharing and processing in heterogeneous clouds
The extensive cloud adoption among the European Public Sector Players empowered them to own and operate a range of cloud infrastructures. These deployments vary both in the size and capabilities, as well as in the range of employed technologies and processes. The public sector, however, lacks the necessary technology to enable effective, interoperable and secure integration of a multitude of its computing clouds and services. In this work we focus on the federation of private clouds and the approaches that enable secure data sharing and processing among the collaborating infrastructures and services of public entities. We investigate the aspects of access control, data and security policy languages, as well as cryptographic approaches that enable fine-grained security and data processing in semi-trusted environments. We identify the main challenges and frame the future work that serve as an enabler of interoperability among heterogeneous infrastructures and services. Our goal is to enable both security and legal conformance as well as to facilitate transparency, privacy and effectivity of private cloud federations for the public sector needs. © 2015 The Authors
Building Blocks to Empower Cognitive Internet with Hybrid Edge Cloud
As we transition from the mobile internet to the 'Cognitive Internet,' a
significant shift occurs in how we engage with technology and intelligence. We
contend that the Cognitive Internet goes beyond the Cognitive Internet of
Things (Cognitive IoT), enabling connected objects to independently acquire
knowledge and understanding. Unlike the Mobile Internet and Cognitive IoT, the
Cognitive Internet integrates collaborative intelligence throughout the
network, blending the cognitive IoT realm with system-wide collaboration and
human intelligence. This integrated intelligence facilitates interactions
between devices, services, entities, and individuals across diverse domains
while preserving decision-making autonomy and accommodating various identities.
The paper delves into the foundational elements, distinct characteristics,
benefits, and industrial impact of the 'Cognitive Internet' paradigm. It
highlights the importance of adaptable AI infrastructures and hybrid edge cloud
(HEC) platforms in enabling this shift. This evolution brings forth cognitive
services, a Knowledge as a Service (KaaS) economy, enhanced decision-making
autonomy, sustainable digital progress, advancements in data management,
processing techniques, and a stronger emphasis on privacy. In essence, this
paper serves as a crucial resource for understanding and leveraging the
transformative potential of HEC for Cognitive Internet. Supported by case
studies, forward-looking perspectives, and real-world applications, it provides
comprehensive insights into this emerging paradigm
Ao final deste trabalho, com base em uma ampla discussão as perguntas de pesquisa associadas à hipótese são respondidas, de forma que a avaliação da hipótese proposta seja realizada perante uma ampla visão das contribuições e trabalhos futuros desta teseAbstract: In the last ten years, network softwarisation processes have been continuously diversified and gradually incorporated into production, mainly through the paradigms of Software Defined Networks (e.g., programmable network flow rules) and Network Functions Virtualization (e.g., orchestration of virtualized network functions). Based on this process, the concept of network slice emerges as a way of defining end-to-end network programmable paths, possibly over shared network infrastructures, requiring strict performance metrics associated to a par- ticular business case. This thesis investigate the hypothesis that the disaggregation of network function performance metrics impacts and composes a network slice footprint incurring in di- verse slicing feature options, which when realized should have their Service Level Agreement (SLA) life cycle management transparently implemented in correspondence to their fulfilling end-to-end communication business case. The validation of such assertive takes place in three aspects: the degrees of freedom by which performance of virtualized network functions can be expressed; the methods of rationalizing the footprint of network slices; and transparent ways to track and manage network assets among multiple administrative domains. In order to achieve such goals, a series of contributions were achieved by this thesis, among them: the construction of a platform for automating methodologies for performance testing of virtual- ized network functions; an elaboration of a methodology for the analysis of footprint features of network slices based on a machine learning classifier algorithm and a multi-criteria analysis algorithm; and the construction of a prototype using blockchain to carry out smart contracts involving service level agreements between administrative systems. Through experiments and analysis we suggest that: performance metrics of virtualized network functions depend on the allocation of resources, internal configurations and test traffic stimulus; network slices can have their resource allocations consistently analyzed/classified by different criteria; and agree- ments between administrative domains can be performed transparently and in various forms of granularity through blockchain smart contracts. At the end of his thesis, through a wide discussion we answer all the research questions associated to the investigated hypothesis in such way its evaluation is performed in face of wide view of the contributions and future work of this thesisDoutoradoEngenharia de ComputaçãoDoutor em Engenharia ElétricaFUNCAM
InterCloud: Utility-Oriented Federation of Cloud Computing Environments for Scaling of Application Services
Cloud computing providers have setup several data centers at different
geographical locations over the Internet in order to optimally serve needs of
their customers around the world. However, existing systems do not support
mechanisms and policies for dynamically coordinating load distribution among
different Cloud-based data centers in order to determine optimal location for
hosting application services to achieve reasonable QoS levels. Further, the
Cloud computing providers are unable to predict geographic distribution of
users consuming their services, hence the load coordination must happen
automatically, and distribution of services must change in response to changes
in the load. To counter this problem, we advocate creation of federated Cloud
computing environment (InterCloud) that facilitates just-in-time,
opportunistic, and scalable provisioning of application services, consistently
achieving QoS targets under variable workload, resource and network conditions.
The overall goal is to create a computing environment that supports dynamic
expansion or contraction of capabilities (VMs, services, storage, and database)
for handling sudden variations in service demands.
This paper presents vision, challenges, and architectural elements of
InterCloud for utility-oriented federation of Cloud computing environments. The
proposed InterCloud environment supports scaling of applications across
multiple vendor clouds. We have validated our approach by conducting a set of
rigorous performance evaluation study using the CloudSim toolkit. The results
demonstrate that federated Cloud computing model has immense potential as it
offers significant performance gains as regards to response time and cost
saving under dynamic workload scenarios.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, conference pape
