    Binary De Bruijn sequences for DS-CDMA systems: analysis and results

    Abstract Code division multiple access (CDMA) using direct sequence (DS) spread spectrum modulation provides multiple access capability essentially thanks to the adoption of proper sequences as spreading codes. The ability of a DS-CDMA receiver to detect the desired signal relies to a great extent on the auto-correlation properties of the spreading code associated to each user; on the other hand, multi-user interference rejection depends on the cross-correlation properties of all the spreading codes in the considered set. As a consequence, the analysis of new families of spreading codes to be adopted in DS-CDMA is of great interest. This article provides results about the evaluation of specific full-length binary sequences, the De Bruijn ones, when applied as spreading codes in DS-CDMA schemes, and compares their performance to other families of spreading codes commonly used, such as m-sequences, Gold, OVSF, and Kasami sequences. While the latter sets of sequences have been specifically designed for application in multi-user communication contexts, De Bruijn sequences come from combinatorial mathematics, and have been applied in completely different scenarios. Considering the similarity of De Bruijn sequences to random sequences, we investigate the performance resulting by applying them as spreading codes. The results herein presented suggest that binary De Bruijn sequences, when properly selected, may compete with more consolidated options, and encourage further investigation activities, specifically focused on the generation of longer sequences, and the definition of correlation-based selection criteria

More precisely, the selected papers have been organized in 7 session: Channel access and scheduling, Energy-aware Protocols, QoS in Mobile Ad-Hoc networks, Multihop Performance Issues, Wireless Internet, Applications and finally Security Issues. The papers (and authors) come from all parts of the world, confirming the international stature of this Workshop. The majority of the contributions are from Europe (France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, UK). However, a significant number is from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Iran, Korea and USA. The proceedings also include two invited papers. We take this opportunity to thank all the authors who submitted their papers to WONS 2006. You helped make this event again a success

    Enhancing SET Teaching at Level 3

    The initial source of motivation for this report was the national response to the Commission on Adult Vocational Teaching and Learning (CAVTL) Report It’s All About Work (2013), and it addresses an issue that remains relevant to the current discussion about the creation of Professional and Technical Pathways to employment - the contribution that excellent vocational teaching and learning makes to the development of the forms of expertise that employers’ require and that facilitate learners’ continuing employability. In the course of discussions between the Gatsby Foundation and the research team the following rationale, focus and outcome was agreed. In the case of the former, to develop a conceptual framework to investigate vocational pedagogy that drew on insights from the academic and grey literature and, in the case of focus, to use that framework to investigate learning and teaching in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) programmes at Level 3 in a variety of SET contexts. In order to do so, it was recognised that it would be important for the research team to take account of the way in which colleges respond to known as well as emerging employer demand for SET skills
