New data on OZI rule violation in bar{p}p annihilation at rest

The results of a measurement of the ratio R = Y(phi pi+ pi-) / Y(omega pi+ pi-) for antiproton annihilation at rest in a gaseous and in a liquid hydrogen target are presented. It was found that the value of this ratio increases with the decreasing of the dipion mass, which demonstrates the difference in the phi and omega production mechanisms. An indication on the momentum transfer dependence of the apparent OZI rule violation for phi production from the 3S1 initial state was found.Comment: 11 pages, 3 PostScript figures, submitted to Physics Letter

    Get PDF
Objective To assess body distribution and timing of appearance of rest tremor in Parkinson's disease. Methods Information was obtained by a computerized database containing historical information collected at the first visit and data collected during the subsequent follow-up visits. Information on rest tremor developed during the follow-up could be therefore obtained by our own observation in a proportion of patients. Results Among 289 patients, rest tremor was reported at disease onset in 65.4% of cases and detected at last follow-up examination in 74.4% of patients. Analysis of patients who did not report rest tremor at disease onset indicated that 26% of such patients (9% in the overall population) manifested rest tremor over the disease course. Rest tremor spread to new sites in 39% of patients who manifested rest tremor at disease onset. Regardless of tremor presentation at disease onset or during the follow-up, upper limb was the most frequent tremor localization. Over the follow-up, rest tremor developed faster in the upper limb than in other body sites. The risk of developing rest tremor during the follow-up was not affected by sex, side of motor symptom onset and site of tremor presentation. However, age of disease onset > 63 years was associated with an increased risk of rest tremor spread. Conclusions This study provides new information about body distribution and timing of rest tremor appearance during the course of early stages of Parkinson's disease that may help clinicians in patients' counselling

PURPOSE: We compared left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction obtained by gated SPECT with that obtained by equilibrium radionuclide angiocardiography in a large cohort of patients. METHODS: Within 1 week, 514 subjects with suspected or known coronary artery disease underwent same-day stress-rest (99m)Tc-sestamibi gated SPECT and radionuclide angiocardiography. For both studies, data were acquired 30 min after completion of exercise and after 3 h rest. RESULTS: In the overall study population, a good correlation between ejection fraction measured by gated SPECT and by radionuclide angiocardiography was observed at rest (r=0.82, p<0.0001) and after stress (r=0.83, p<0.0001). In Bland-Altman analysis, the mean differences in ejection fraction (radionuclide angiocardiography minus gated SPECT) were -0.6% at rest and 1.7% after stress. In subjects with normal perfusion (n=362), a good correlation between ejection fraction measured by gated SPECT and by radionuclide angiocardiography was observed at rest (r=0.72, p<0.0001) and after stress (r=0.70, p<0.0001) and the mean differences in ejection fraction were -0.9% at rest and 1.4% after stress. Also in patients with abnormal perfusion (n=152), a good correlation between the two techniques was observed both at rest (r=0.89, p<0.0001) and after stress (r=0.90, p<0.0001) and the mean differences in ejection fraction were 0.1% at rest and 2.5% after stress. CONCLUSION: In a large study population, a good agreement was observed in the evaluation of LV ejection fraction between gated SPECT and radionuclide angiocardiography. However, in patients with perfusion abnormalities, a slight underestimation in poststress LV ejection fraction was observed using gated SPECT as compared to equilibrium radionuclide angiocardiography

Uniform decrease of alpha-global field power induced by intermittent photic stimulation of healthy subjects

Nineteen-channel EEGs were recorded from the scalp surface of 30 healthy subjects (16 males and 14 females, mean age: 34 years, SD: 11.7 years) at rest and under trains of intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) at rates of 5, 10 and 20 Hz. Digitalized data were submitted to spectral analysis with fast fourier transformation providing the basis for the computation of global field power (GFP). For quantification, GFP values in the frequency ranges of 5, 10 and 20 Hz at rest were divided by the corresponding data obtained under IPS. All subjects showed a photic driving effect at each rate of stimulation. GFP data were normally distributed, whereas ratios from photic driving effect data showed no uniform behavior due to high interindividual variability. Suppression of alpha-power after IPS with 10 Hz was observed in about 70% of the volunteers. In contrast, ratios of alpha-power were unequivocal in all subjects: IPS at 20 Hz always led to a suppression of alpha-power. Dividing alpha-GFP with 20-Hz IPS by alpha-GFP at rest (R = a-GFPIPS/a-GFPrest) thus resulted in ratios lower than 1. We conclude that ratios from GFP data with 20-Hz IPS may provide a suitable paradigm for further investigations. Decays into {\pi}+{\pi}- of the f0(1370) scalar glueball candidate in pp central exclusive production experiments

The existence and properties of the f0(1370) scalar meson are rather well established from data of antiproton annihilations at rest. However conflicting results from Central Exclusive Production (CEP) experiments of the last millennium and ignorance of data from antiproton annihilations at rest in H2 and D2 bubble chambers have generated doubts on the very existence of the f0(1370). Properties of {\pi}+{\pi}- pairs produced in central exclusive production (CEP) reactions observed in old data together with data collected in the current decade at high energy colliders permit to show that {\pi}+{\pi}- decays of the f0(1370) meson are directly observable as an isolated peak between 1.1 and 1.6 GeV. Consequences of this observation and prospects for the identification of the scalar glueball ground-state are discussed.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figure

Retrieving the hemodynamic response function in resting state fMRI: methodology and application

    Get PDF
In this paper we present a procedure to retrieve the hemodynamic response function (HRF) from resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. The fundamentals of the procedures are further validated by considering simultaneous electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings. The typical HRF shape at rest for a group of healthy subject is presented. Then we present the modifications to the shape of the HRF at rest following two physiological modulations: eyes open versus eyes closed and propofol-induced modulations of consciousness

Excessive gas exchange impairment during exercise in a subject with a history of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and high altitude pulmonary edema

A 27-year-old male subject (V(O2 max)), 92% predicted) with a history of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and a clinically documented case of high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) was examined at rest and during exercise. Pulmonary function testing revealed a normal forced vital capacity (FVC, 98.1% predicted) and diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (D(L(CO)), 91.2% predicted), but significant airway obstruction at rest [forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV(1)), 66.5% predicted; forced expiratory flow at 50% of vital capacity (FEF(50)), 34.3% predicted; and FEV(1) /FVC 56.5%] that was not reversible with an inhaled bronchodilator. Gas exchange worsened from rest to exercise, with the alveolar to arterial P(O2) difference (AaD(O2)) increasing from 0 at rest to 41 mmHg at maximal normoxic exercise (VO(2) = 41.4 mL/kg/min) and from 11 to 31 mmHg at maximal hypoxic exercise (VO(2) = 21.9 mL/kg/min). Arterial P(O2) decreased to 67.8 and 29.9 mmHg at maximal normoxic and hypoxic exercise, respectively. These data indicate that our subject with a history of BPD is prone to a greater degree of exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia for a given VO(2) and F(I(O2)) than healthy age-matched controls, which may increase the subject's susceptibility to high altitude illness

C60+_{60}^+ and the Diffuse Interstellar Bands: An Independent Laboratory Check

In 2015, Campbell et al. (Nature 523, 322) presented spectroscopic laboratory gas phase data for the fullerene cation, C60+_{60}^+, that coincide with reported astronomical spectra of two diffuse interstellar band (DIB) features at 9633 and 9578 \AA. In the following year additional laboratory spectra were linked to three other and weaker DIBs at 9428, 9366, and 9349 \AA. The laboratory data were obtained using wavelength-dependent photodissociation spectroscopy of small (up to three) He-tagged C60+_{60}^+-Hen_n ion complexes, yielding rest wavelengths for the bare C60+_{60}^+ cation by correcting for the He-induced wavelength shifts. Here we present an alternative approach to derive the rest wavelengths of the four most prominent C60+_{60}^+ absorption features, using high resolution laser dissociation spectroscopy of C60+_{60}^+ embedded in ultracold He droplets. Accurate wavelengths of the bare fullerene cation are derived based on linear wavelength shifts recorded for Hen_nC60+_{60}^+ species with nn up to 32. A careful analysis of all available data results in precise rest wavelengths (in air) for the four most prominent C60+_{60}^+ bands: 9631.9(1) \AA, 9576.7(1) \AA, 9427.5(1) \AA, and 9364.9(1) \AA. The corresponding band widths have been derived and the relative band intensity ratios are discussed
