    NASA SBIR abstracts of 1990 phase 1 projects

    The research objectives of the 280 projects placed under contract in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) 1990 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase 1 program are described. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses in response to NASA's 1990 SBIR Phase 1 Program Solicitation. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 280, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. The document also includes Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference in the 1990 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA field center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number

    Separability of neural responses to standardised mechanical stimulation of limbs

    Abstract Considerable scientific and technological efforts are currently being made towards the development of neural prostheses. Understanding how the peripheral nervous system responds to electro-mechanical stimulation of the limb, will help to inform the design of prostheses that can restore function or accelerate recovery from injury to the sensory motor system. However, due to differences in experimental protocols, it is difficult, if not impossible, to make meaningful comparisons between different peripheral nerve interfaces. Therefore, we developed a low-cost electronic system to standardise the mechanical stimulation of a rat’s hindpaw. Three types of mechanical stimulations, namely, proprioception, touch and nociception were delivered to the limb and the electroneurogram signals were recorded simultaneously from the sciatic nerve with a 16-contact cuff electrode. For the first time, results indicate separability of neural responses according to stimulus type as well as intensity. Statistical analysis reveal that cuff contacts placed circumferentially, rather than longitudinally, are more likely to lead to higher classification rates. This flexible setup may be readily adapted for systematic comparison of various electrodes and mechanical stimuli in rodents.     Study of guidance techniques for aerial application of agricultural compounds

    Candidate systems were identified for evaluation of suitability in meeting specified accuracy requirements for a swath guidance system in an agriculture aircraft. Further examination reduced the list of potential candidates to a single category, i.e., transponder type systems, for detailed evaluation. Within this category three systems were found which met the basic accuracy requirements of the work statement. The Flying Flagman, the Electronic Flagging and the Raydist Director System. In addition to evaluating the systems against the specified requirements, each system was compared with the other two systems on a relative basis. The conclusions supported by the analyses show the Flying Flagman system to be the most suitable system currently available to meet the requirements

    VOLUNTARY CONTROL OF BREATHING ACCORDING TO THE BREATHING PATTERN DURING LISTENING TO MUSIC AND NON-CONTACT MEASUREMENT OF HEART RATE AND RESPIRATION

    We investigated if listening to songs changes breathing pattern which changes autonomic responses such as heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) or change in breathing pattern is a byproduct of listening to songs or change in breathing pattern as well as listening to songs causes changes in autonomic responses. Seven subjects (4 males and 3 females) participated in a pilot study where they listened to two types of songs and used a custom developed biofeedback program to control their breathing pattern to match the one recorded during listening to the songs. Coherencies between EEG, breathing pattern and RR intervals (RRI) were calculated to study the interaction with neural responses. Trends in HRV varied only during listening to songs, suggesting that autonomic response was affected by listening to songs irrespective of control of breathing. Effective coherence during songs while spontaneously breathing was more than during silence and during control of breathing. These results, although preliminary, suggest that listening to songs as well as change in breathing patterns changes the autonomic response but the effect of listening to songs may surpass the effect of changes in breathing. We explored feasibility of using non-contact measurements of HR and breathing rate (BR) by using recently developed Facemesh and other methods for tracking regions of interests from videos of faces of subjects. Performance was better for BR than HR, and over currently used methods. However, refinement of the approach would be needed to get the precision required for detecting subtle changes

    Design of a Regulated Micromachined Air-Sniffer Using Thermal Transpiration Effect for E-Nose Applications

    Microfluidics artificial olfaction systems are used for plant disease diagnosis in the agricultural field. In an electronic nose, the sniffer draws the air towards an array of gas sensors that detect volatile organic compounds corresponding to diseased plants. The currently available electronic noses involve a mechanical pump of moving parts prone to friction losses, limiting large-scale application. In this work, a microchannel that works on thermal transpiration principle to control the airflow inside it is proposed and designed. It has the potential to be employed as a sniffer component for electronic noses, designed using microelectromechanical systems. COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software is used to identify the design parameters of a three-dimensional microchannel and determine the airflow velocity resulting from the applied temperature using the Navier-Stokes and Energy equation. The heat transfer and fluid flow have been modelled for two different channel geometries (i.e., rectangular, and cylindrical) and two materials (i.e., pyrex and silicon). The proposed microchannel geometries are optimised to obtain the Knudsen number in the range of 0.00

    The preliminary design results are presented of the advanced aircraft design project. The goal was to take a revolutionary look into the design of a general aviation aircraft. Phase 1 of the project included the preliminary design of two configurations, a pusher, and a tractor. Phase 2 included the selection of only one configuration for further study. The pusher configuration was selected on the basis of performance characteristics, cabin noise, natural laminar flow, and system layouts. The design was then iterated to achieve higher levels of performance

The primary objective of the GRASP study was to identify beneficial applications of specialized end-effectors and robotic hand devices for automating any ground operations which are performed at the Kennedy Space Center. Thus, operations for expendable vehicles, the Space Shuttle and its components, and all payloads were included in the study.     High-speed civil transport flight- and propulsion-control technological issues

    Technology advances required in the flight and propulsion control system disciplines to develop a high speed civil transport (HSCT) are identified. The mission and requirements of the transport and major flight and propulsion control technology issues are discussed. Each issue is ranked and, for each issue, a plan for technology readiness is given. Certain features are unique and dominate control system design. These features include the high temperature environment, large flexible aircraft, control-configured empennage, minimizing control margins, and high availability and excellent maintainability. The failure to resolve most high-priority issues can prevent the transport from achieving its goals. The flow-time for hardware may require stimulus, since market forces may be insufficient to ensure timely production. Flight and propulsion control technology will contribute to takeoff gross weight reduction. Similar technology advances are necessary also to ensure flight safety for the transport. The certification basis of the HSCT must be negotiated between airplane manufacturers and government regulators. Efficient, quality design of the transport will require an integrated set of design tools that support the entire engineering design team
