    Oceans, covering 70% of Earth's surface, arelargely unexplored, with about 95% remaining a mystery.Underwater wireless communication is pivotal in various domains,such as real-time aquatic data collection, marine surveillance,disaster prevention, archaeological exploration, andenvironmental monitoring. The Internet of Things has openednew avenues in underwater exploration through the underwaterInternet of Things concept. This innovative technology facilitatessmart ocean research, from small case studies to large-scaleoperations.     Horizontal trajectory based mobile multi-sink routing in underwater sensor networks

    Scientific, commercial, exploration, and monitoring applications of underwater sensor networks have drawn the attention of researchers toward the investigation of routing protocols that are robust, scalable, and energy efficient. This has brought significant research in network layer routing protocols. Irrespective of the field of application it is desirable to increase network lifetime by reducing energy consumed by sensor nodes in the network or by balancing energy in the entire network. Energy balancing refers to the uniform distribution of the network’s residual energy such that all nodes remain alive for a long time. It requires uniform energy consumption by each sensor node in the network instead of the same node being involved in every transmission. In this paper, we discuss two routing methods for three-dimensional environments in which the water region under monitor is divided into subregions of equal height and each subregion has a sink. Nodes in the subregion send data to the sink designated for that subregion. The first method called static multi-sink routing uses static sinks and the second method called horizontal trajectory-based mobile multi-sink routing (HT-MMR) uses mobile sinks with a horizontal trajectory. Simulation results show that the proposed HT-MMR reduces average energy consumption and average energy tax by 16.69% and 16.44% respectively. HT-MMR is energy efficient as it enhances network lifetime by 11.11%

    Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces in Challenging Environments: Underwater, Underground, Industrial and Disaster

    Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been introduced to improve the signal propagation characteristics by focusing the signal power in the preferred direction, thus making the communication environment "smart". The typical use cases and applications for the "smart" environment include beyond 5G communication networks, smart cities, etc. The main advantage of employing RISs in such networks is a more efficient exploitation of spatial degrees of freedom. This advantage manifests in better interference mitigation as well as increased spectral and energy efficiency due to passive beam steering. Challenging environments comprise a range of scenarios, which share the fact that it is extremely difficult to establish a communication link using conventional technology due to many impairments typically associated with the propagation medium and increased signal scattering. Although the challenges for the design of communication networks, and specifically the Internet of Things (IoT), in such environments are known, there is no common enabler or solution for all these applications. Interestingly, the use of RISs in such scenarios can become such an enabler and a game changer technology. Surprisingly, the benefits of RIS for wireless networking in underwater and underground medium as well as in industrial and disaster environments have not been addressed yet. In this paper, we aim at filling this gap by discussing potential use cases, deployment strategies and design aspects for RIS devices in underwater IoT, underground IoT as well as Industry 4.0 and emergency networks.     An effective data-collection scheme with AUV path planning in underwater wireless sensor networks

    Data collection in underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) using autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) is a more robust solution than traditional approaches, instead of transmitting data from each node to a destination node. However, the design of delay-aware and energy-efficient path planning for AUVs is one of the most crucial problems in collecting data for UWSNs. To reduce network delay and increase network lifetime, we proposed a novel reliable AUV-based data-collection routing protocol for UWSNs. The proposed protocol employs a route planning mechanism to collect data using AUVs. The sink node directs AUVs for data collection from sensor nodes to reduce energy consumption. First, sensor nodes are organized into clusters for better scalability, and then, these clusters are arranged into groups to assign an AUV to each group. Second, the traveling path for each AUV is crafted based on the Markov decision process (MDP) for the reliable collection of data. The simulation results affirm the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed technique in terms of throughput, energy efficiency, delay, and reliability. © 2022 Wahab Khan et al

    Green underwater wireless communications using hybrid optical-acoustic technologies

    Underwater wireless communication is a rapidly growing field, especially with the recent emergence of technologies such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). To support the high-bandwidth applications using these technologies, underwater optics has attracted significant attention, alongside its complementary technology – underwater acoustics. In this paper, we propose a hybrid opto-acoustic underwater wireless communication model that reduces network power consumption and supports high-data rate underwater applications by selecting appropriate communication links in response to varying traffic loads and dynamic weather conditions. Underwater optics offers high data rates and consumes less power. However, due to the severe absorption of light in the medium, the communication range is short in underwater optics. Conversely, acoustics suffers from low data rate and high power consumption, but provides longer communication ranges. Since most underwater equipment relies on battery power, energy-efficient communication is critical for reliable underwater communications. In this work, we derive analytical models for both underwater acoustics and optics, and calculate the required transmit power for reliable communications in various underwater communication environments. We then formulate an optimization problem that minimizes the network power consumption for carrying data from underwater nodes to surface sinks under varying traffic loads and weather conditions. The proposed optimization model can be solved offline periodically, hence the additional computational complexity to find the optimum solution for larger networks is not a limiting factor for practical applications. Our results indicate that the proposed technique yields up to 35% power savings compared to existing opto-acoustic solutions

    Recommendations on communication platform and data standards to facilitate autonomous operations, high performance computing and the integration of large data sets

    The use of standards for wired and wireless communication and power transfer in the subsea environment has lagged compared to use of standards on land (ref. telecom standards, wireless networks , power distribution etc.). Recent years has seen an increased focus on standards, pushed by oil and gas operators as well as other users of subsea control & communication systems, sensors and instrumentation. Work to agree on standards has to some degree been hampered by the ubiquitous use of proprietary legacy products. Collaboration with the main players in carbon storage is a key factor in achieving the goal of an accelerated digitized monitoring and early warning system. Using established technology and standardization from the oil and gas industry is important to achieve optimal technical solutions and further to keep the cost at an acceptable level. Established existing products and solutions under development can thus be used in future data collection with a minimum of customization. Offshore carbon storage will be located remotely and will depend on on-site communication infrastructure. With access to local infrastructure, the last distance to various sensors for collecting CCS monitoring data should take place using established standards. It can be wired solutions with fiber or wireless connections to sensors in the area. There may also be autonomous units that are out retrieving data from remote sensors. Data can then be uploaded from docking stations with standardized interfaces for communication. Understanding communication infrastructures in use today and solutions that are under development through collaboration and standardization are of utmost importance to achieve Digimon's goals. An open architecture standards-based system will lead to a fully integrated digital solution with reduced costs and Improved value - by multiple use of a common sensing infrastructure.     Internet of Underwater Things and Big Marine Data Analytics -- A Comprehensive Survey

    The Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is an emerging communication ecosystem developed for connecting underwater objects in maritime and underwater environments. The IoUT technology is intricately linked with intelligent boats and ships, smart shores and oceans, automatic marine transportations, positioning and navigation, underwater exploration, disaster prediction and prevention, as well as with intelligent monitoring and security. The IoUT has an influence at various scales ranging from a small scientific observatory, to a midsized harbor, and to covering global oceanic trade. The network architecture of IoUT is intrinsically heterogeneous and should be sufficiently resilient to operate in harsh environments. This creates major challenges in terms of underwater communications, whilst relying on limited energy resources. Additionally, the volume, velocity, and variety of data produced by sensors, hydrophones, and cameras in IoUT is enormous, giving rise to the concept of Big Marine Data (BMD), which has its own processing challenges. Hence, conventional data processing techniques will falter, and bespoke Machine Learning (ML) solutions have to be employed for automatically learning the specific BMD behavior and features facilitating knowledge extraction and decision support. The motivation of this paper is to comprehensively survey the IoUT, BMD, and their synthesis. It also aims for exploring the nexus of BMD with ML. We set out from underwater data collection and then discuss the family of IoUT data communication techniques with an emphasis on the state-of-the-art research challenges. We then review the suite of ML solutions suitable for BMD handling and analytics.
