    An integration of partial evaluation in a generic abstract interpretation framework

    Information generated by abstract interpreters has long been used to perform program specialization. Additionally, if the abstract interpreter generates a multivariant analysis, it is also possible to perform mĂşltiple specialization. Information about valĂşes of variables is propagated by simulating program execution and performing fixpoint computations for recursive calis. In contrast, traditional partial evaluators (mainly) use unfolding for both propagating valĂşes of variables and transforming the program. It is known that abstract interpretation is a better technique for propagating success valĂşes than unfolding. However, the program transformations induced by unfolding may lead to important optimizations which are not directly achievable in the existing frameworks for mĂşltiple specialization based on abstract interpretation. The aim of this work is to devise a specialization framework which integrates the better information propagation of abstract interpretation with the powerful program transformations performed by partial evaluation, and which can be implemented via small modifications to existing generic abstract interpreters. With this aim, we will relate top-down abstract interpretation with traditional concepts in partial evaluation and sketch how the sophisticated techniques developed for controlling partial evaluation can be adapted to the proposed specialization framework. We conclude that there can be both practical and conceptual advantages in the proposed integration of partial evaluation and abstract interpretation

    Well-quasi orders in general, and homeomorphic embedding in particular, have gained popularity to ensure the termination of techniques for program analysis, specialisation, transformation, and verification. In this paper we survey and discuss this use of homeomorphic embedding and clarify the advantages of such an approach over one using well-founded orders. We also discuss various extensions of the homeomorphic embedding relation. We conclude with a study of homeomorphic embedding in the context of metaprogramming, presenting some new (positive and negative) results and open problems

    Experiences with Some Benchmarks for Deductive Databases and Implementations of Bottom-Up Evaluation

    OpenRuleBench is a large benchmark suite for rule engines, which includes deductive databases. We previously proposed a translation of Datalog to C++ based on a method that "pushes" derived tuples immediately to places where they are used. In this paper, we report performance results of various implementation variants of this method compared to XSB, YAP and DLV. We study only a fraction of the OpenRuleBench problems, but we give a quite detailed analysis of each such task and the factors which influence performance. The results not only show the potential of our method and implementation approach, but could be valuable for anybody implementing systems which should be able to execute tasks of the discussed types.Comment: In Proceedings WLP'15/'16/WFLP'16, arXiv:1701.0014

    Program analysis for code duplication in logic programs

    In this PhD project, we deal with the issue of code duplication in logic programs. In particular semantical duplication or redundancy is generally viewed as a possible seed of inconvenience in all phases of the program lifecycle, from development to maintenance. The core of this research is the elaboration of a theory of semantical duplication, and of an automated program analysis capable of detecting such duplication and which could steer, to some extent, automatic refactoring of program code
