    Properties impact from wastewater treatment sludge utilized into fired clay bricks

    Disposal of wastewater treatment plant sludge waste into landfills has become a serious threat to the global environment due to the massive generated every year. Nevertheless, a relevant alternative solution could be developed as recently rapid growing interest in the usage of sludge material to the manufacturing of fired clay brick has been observed. The utilization of these waste materials in fired clay bricks usually has positive effects on the properties such as lightweight bricks with improved shrinkage, porosity, and strength. The primary objective of this study is to focus on the properties impact of the wastewater treatment sludge incorporated into fired clay bricks. The characteristics of raw materials obtained by using the X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer showed that the chemical composition of the raw materials of clay soil and wastewater treatment sludge was high with silicon dioxide and with the same chemical composition Type A and Type B of wastewater treatment sludge are suitable to replace clay soil as raw materials. The recommended percentage of wastewater treatment sludge incorporation was up to 20% with better physical and mechanical properties. The physical and mechanical properties were tested according to BS 3921:1985. The results showed that the utilization of Type A and Type B into brick manufacturing complied with BS 3921:1985 standard requirements. Therefore, wastewater treatment sludge can be material for brick production with appropriate mix and design and as an alternative environmentally friendly disposal method

    Fault Signature Identification for BLDC motor Drive System -A Statistical Signal Fusion Approach

    A hybrid approach based on multirate signal processing and sensory data fusion is proposed for the condition monitoring and identification of fault signal signatures used in the Flight ECS (Engine Control System) unit. Though motor current signature analysis (MCSA) is widely used for fault detection now-a-days, the proposed hybrid method qualifies as one of the most powerful online/offline techniques for diagnosing the process faults. Existing approaches have some drawbacks that can degrade the performance and accuracy of a process-diagnosis system. In particular, it is very difficult to detect random stochastic noise due to the nonlinear behavior of valve controller. Using only Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT), frequency leakage and the small amplitude of the current components related to the fault can be observed, but the fault due to the controller behavior cannot be observed. Therefore, a framework of advanced multirate signal and data-processing aided with sensor fusion algorithms is proposed in this article and satisfactory results are obtained. For implementing the system, a DSP-based BLDC motor controller with three-phase inverter module (TMS 320F2812) is used and the performance of the proposed method is validated on real time data.Comment: 7 Pages, 7 figure

    La ingeniería de control se especializa en desarrollar procesos de alta calidad mediante el modelamiento matemático de diversos sistemas y el diseño de control que permite regular el comportamiento de un sistema utilizando condiciones deseadas. Las técnicas de control que se utilizan para el motor de corriente continua son de mucha utilidad al momento de llevar a cabo una estabilización de la velocidad o el par, algunas de ellas pertenecen a técnicas de control inteligente (lógica difusa y redes neuronales), pero la mayoría se centra en las técnicas de control clásicas (PI, PID) logrando resultados satisfactorios. Las técnicas de modelamiento matemático facilitan la representación de las ecuaciones diferenciales, dependiendo del tipo del motor DC se han utilizado diferentes técnicas (transformada de Laplace, espacio de estados). El software y hardware tienen una fuerte relación con lo que se refiere a las simulaciones y experimentaciones que se usan para validar el funcionamiento de un sistema complejo como lo es el motor CC. En este trabajo se presenta una revisión sistemática de literatura sobre técnicas de control, técnicas de modelamiento matemático, software y hardware que se aplican en un motor de corriente continua, para ello se analizó y resumió 75 artículos científicos de los últimos 4 años provenientes de cinco bases bibliográficas (IEEE Xplore, Digital Library, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, ResearchGate, Preprints). Los documentos responden a tres preguntas de investigación planteadas en este estudio. Por medio de los resultados obtenidos se identificaron grandes ventajas y desventajas de las técnicas de control y modelamiento matemático, con respecto al software y hardaware se demostró su gran utilidad para la realización de sistemas automatizados

    High performance position control for permanent magnet synchronous drives

    In the design and test of electric drive control systems, computer simulations provide a useful way to verify the correctness and efficiency of various schemes and control algorithms before the final system is actually constructed, therefore, development time and associated costs are reduced. Nevertheless, the transition from the simulation stage to the actual implementation has to be as straightforward as possible. This document presents the design and implementation of a position control system for permanent magnet synchronous drives, including a review and comparison of various related works about non-linear control systems applied to this type of machine. The overall electric drive control system is simulated and tested in Proteus VSM software which is able to simulate the interaction between the firmware running on a microcontroller and analogue circuits connected to it. The dsPIC33FJ32MC204 is used as the target processor to implement the control algorithms. The electric drive model is developed using elements existing in the Proteus VSM library. As in any high performance electric drive system, field oriented control is applied to achieve accurate torque control. The complete control system is distributed in three control loops, namely torque, speed and position. A standard PID control system, and a hybrid control system based on fuzzy logic are implemented and tested. The natural variation of motor parameters, such as winding resistance and magnetic flux are also simulated. Comparisons between the two control schemes are carried out for speed and position using different error measurements, such as, integral square error, integral absolute error and root mean squared error. Comparison results show a superior performance of the hybrid fuzzy-logic-based controller when coping with parameter variations, and by reducing torque ripple, but the results are reversed when periodical torque disturbances are present. Finally, the speed controllers are implemented and evaluated physically in a testbed based on a brushless DC motor, with the control algorithms implemented on a dsPIC30F2010. The comparisons carried out for the speed controllers are consistent for both simulation and physical implementation

    Student satisfaction on service quality: a study at Malaysian public university

    Students will engage in informal learning outside the lecture hall in addition to the formal learning. The Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) Centre’s for General Studies and Co-curriculum (PPUK) is a division that provides services focused on activities outside the lecture hall. Issues, particularly student satisfaction, become a critical concern for PPUK management as a result of these actions. The crucial element is determining the level of student satisfaction with PPUK's services where students have difficulty carrying out activities outside the lecture hall due to problems with the quality of services supplied by PPUK involving Credited Co-Curricular Courses (KKB) that the university has scheduled. As a result, if the services provided are unsatisfactory, which will have an indirect negative impact on the student's satisfaction as a student. The purpose of this study was to determine students' perceptions of satisfaction with the services provided by PPUK, UTHM based on the SERVQUAL Model's five dimensions (physical evidence, responsive, empathy, guarantee, and trustworthiness). The study is designed in the form of a survey, with data collected via a questionnaire. The researcher focused on UTHM students who registered for KKB in the second semester for this study. To answer the research questions, the data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software to measure the frequency, mean score, t-test, and correlation of each element. Overall, the results show that students are extremely satisfied with the services provided by the PPUK UTHM. Other inferential and regression analyses will be investigated further and improved to the PPUK curriculum

    Precision Control of a Sensorless Brushless Direct Current Motor System

    Sensorless control strategies were first suggested well over a decade ago with the aim of reducing the size, weight and unit cost of electrically actuated servo systems. The resulting algorithms have been successfully applied to the induction and synchronous motor families in applications where control of armature speeds above approximately one hundred revolutions per minute is desired. However, sensorless position control remains problematic. This thesis provides an in depth investigation into sensorless motor control strategies for high precision motion control applications. Specifically, methods of achieving control of position and very low speed thresholds are investigated. The developed grey box identification techniques are shown to perform better than their traditional white or black box counterparts. Further, fuzzy model based sliding mode control is implemented and results demonstrate its improved robustness to certain classes of disturbance. Attempts to reject uncertainty within the developed models using the sliding mode are discussed. Novel controllers, which enhance the performance of the sliding mode are presented. Finally, algorithms that achieve control without a primary feedback sensor are successfully demonstrated. Sensorless position control is achieved with resolutions equivalent to those of existing stepper motor technology. The successful control of armature speeds below sixty revolutions per minute is achieved and problems typically associated with motor starting are circumvented.Research Instruments Ltd

    Simulink modeling and design of an efficient hardware-constrained FPGA-based PMSM speed controller

    The aim of this paper is to present a holistic approach to modeling and FPGA implementation of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) speed controller. The whole system is modeled in the Matlab Simulink environment. The controller is then translated to discrete time and remodeled using System Generator blocks, directly synthesizable into FPGA hardware. The algorithm is further refined and factorized to take into account hardware constraints, so as to fit into a low cost FPGA, without significantly increasing the execution time. The resulting controller is then integrated together with sensor interfaces and analysis tools and implemented into an FPGA device. Experimental results validate the controller and verify the design

    As a result of increasing the use of the brushless direct current (BLDC) motor in many life applications instead of the traditional motors, it is important to list and specify the more for its controlling methods. This paper presents a number of speed and current controlling methods as hysteresis band, variable dc-link bus voltage and pulse width modulation (PWM) controlling methods. These controlling methods have proportional integral derivative (PID) gains which are optimized by using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. By using fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis to study the controller behavior from frequency analysis of the output signals and compute total harmonic distortion (THD), it can specify the more useful controlling method.
