The Relationship between IR Effectiveness Measures and User Satisfaction
This paper presents an experimental study of users assessing the quality of Google web search results. In particular we look at how users' satisfaction correlates with the effectiveness of Google as quantified by IR measures such as precision and the suite of Cumulative Gain measures (CG, DCG, NDCG). Results indicate strong correlation between users' satisfaction, CG and precision, moderate correlation with DCG, with perhaps surprisingly negligible correlation with NDCG. The reasons for the low correlation with NDCG are examined
On the Investigation of a Novel Dual-Control-Gate Floating Gate Transistor for VCO Applications
A new MOS device called Dual-Control Gate Floating Gate Transistor (DCG-FGT) is used as a building block in analog design. This device offers new approaches in circuit design and allows developing new functionalities through two operating modes: Threshold Voltage Adjustable Mode, where the DCG-FGT behaves like a MOS transistor with an electrically adjustable threshold voltage. Mixer Signal Mode where the DCG-FGT can mix two independent signals on its floating gate. This device is developed to be fully compliant with CMOS Non Volatile Memory (NVM) process. An electrical model of the DCG-FGT has been implemented in an electrical simulator to be available for analog design. A DCG-FGT based ring oscillator is studied in this paper
Magnetic resonance dacryocystography: Its role in the diagnosis and treatment plan of lacrimal drainage system obstructions
Objective: To evaluate the role of magnetic resonance dacryocystography (MR-DCG) technique in patients with obstruction of lacrimal drainage system.
Methods: A total of 40 patients who had presented to the ophthalmology clinic were suspected to have obstruction of lacrimal drainage system, were evaluated with MR-DCG after instillation of 0.5% Gd-DTPA conjunctival contrast medium. Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) was performed in patients who were found to have lacrimal drainage system obstruction on either side on MR-DCG.
Results: Obstruction of lacrimal drainage system was successfully detected in a total of 49 eyes of 40 patients undergoing examination with MR-DCG. The MR-DCG findings of 29 nasolacrimal systems were compared with the intraoperative findings in 28 out of 40 patients who had undergone the DCR operation. The sensitivity of MR-DCG was determined as 100% and specificity as 96.7% for identification of nasolacrimal system obstruction when compared with the intraoperative findings, and MR-DCG was found to detect obstruction with high accuracy.
Conclusion: MR-DCG has a high success rate in detection of lacrimal drainage system obstructions and the level and cause of the obstruction
LHIP: Extended DCGs for Configurable Robust Parsing
We present LHIP, a system for incremental grammar development using an
extended DCG formalism. The system uses a robust island-based parsing method
controlled by user-defined performance thresholds.Comment: 10 pages, in Proc. Coling9
Regulation of Dense-Core Granule Replenishment by Autocrine BMP Signalling in Drosophila Secondary Cells
Regulated secretion by glands and neurons involves release of signalling molecules and enzymes selectively concentrated in dense-core granules (DCGs). Although we understand how many secretagogues stimulate DCG release, how DCG biogenesis is then accelerated to replenish the DCG pool remains poorly characterised. Here we demonstrate that each prostate-like secondary cell (SC) in the paired adult Drosophila melanogaster male accessory glands contains approximately ten large DCGs, which are loaded with the Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) ligand Decapentaplegic (Dpp). These DCGs can be marked in living tissue by a glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI) lipid-anchored form of GFP. In virgin males, BMP signalling is sporadically activated by constitutive DCG secretion. Upon mating, approximately four DCGs are typically released immediately, increasing BMP signalling, primarily via an autocrine mechanism. Using inducible knockdown specifically in adult SCs, we show that secretion requires the Soluble NSF Attachment Protein, SNAP24. Furthermore, mating-dependent BMP signalling not only promotes cell growth, but is also necessary to accelerate biogenesis of new DCGs, restoring DCG number within 24 h. Our analysis therefore reveals an autocrine BMP-mediated feedback mechanism for matching DCG release to replenishment as secretion rates fluctuate, and might explain why in other disease-relevant systems, like pancreatic β-cells, BMP signalling is also implicated in the control of secretion
