Towards recovery of complex shapes in meshes using digital images for reverse engineering applications
When an object owns complex shapes, or when its outer surfaces are simply inaccessible, some of its parts may not be captured during its reverse engineering. These deficiencies in the point cloud result in a set of holes in the reconstructed mesh. This paper deals with the use of information extracted from digital images to recover missing areas of a physical object. The proposed algorithm fills in these holes by solving an optimization problem that combines two kinds of information: (1) the geometric information available on the surrounding of the holes, (2) the information contained in an image of the real object. The constraints come from the image irradiance equation, a first-order non-linear partial differential equation that links the position of the mesh vertices to the light intensity of the image pixels. The blending conditions are satisfied by using an objective function based on a mechanical model of bar network that simulates the curvature evolution over the mesh. The inherent shortcomings both to the current holefilling algorithms and the resolution of the image irradiance equations are overcom
Classification of pathology in diabetic eye disease
Proliferative diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that can eventually lead to blindness. Early identification of this complication reduces the risk of blindness by initiating timely treatment. We report the utility of pattern analysis tools linked with a simple linear discriminant analysis that not only identifies new vessel growth in the retinal fundus but also localises the area of pathology. Ten fluorescein images were analysed using seven feature descriptors including area, perimeter, circularity, curvature, entropy, wavelet second moment and the correlation dimension. Our results indicate that traditional features such as area or perimeter measures of neovascularisation associated with proliferative retinopathy were not sensitive enough to detect early proliferative retinopathy (SNR = 0.76, 0.75 respectively). The wavelet second moment provided the best discrimination with a SNR of 1.17. Combining second moment, curvature and global correlation dimension provided a 100% discrimination (SNR = 1)
Writing Reusable Digital Geometry Algorithms in a Generic Image Processing Framework
Digital Geometry software should reflect the generality of the underlying
mathe- matics: mapping the latter to the former requires genericity. By
designing generic solutions, one can effectively reuse digital geometry data
structures and algorithms. We propose an image processing framework focused on
the Generic Programming paradigm in which an algorithm on the paper can be
turned into a single code, written once and usable with various input types.
This approach enables users to design and implement new methods at a lower
cost, try cross-domain experiments and help generalize resultsComment: Workshop on Applications of Discrete Geometry and Mathematical

Combination of high-resolution cone beam computed tomography and metal artefact reduction software: a new image fusion technique for evaluating intracranial stent apposition after aneurysm treatment.
We introduce a new imaging technique to improve visualisation of stent apposition after endovascular treatment of brain aneurysms employing high-resolution cone beam CT and three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography. After performing a stent-assisted coil embolisation of brain aneurysm, the image datasets were processed with a metal artefact reduction software followed by the automated image fusion programmes. Two patients who underwent aneurysm coiling using a Neuroform stent were evaluated. The reconstructed 3D images showed a detailed structure of the stent struts and identified malappositions of the deployed stents. Case 1 showed good apposition on the outer curvature side of the carotid siphon, while the inner curvature side showed prominent malapposition. Case 2, with multiple aneurysms, showed good apposition on both outer and inner curvature sides, although inward prolapse of the struts was observed. This new imaging technique may help evaluate stent apposition after the endovascular aneurysm treatment
Estimation of Minkowski tensors from digital grey-scale images
It has been shown that local algorithms based on grey-scale images sometimes
lead to asymptotically unbiased estimators for surface area and integrated mean
curvature. This paper extends the results to estimators for Minkowski tensors.
In particular, asymptotically unbiased local algorithms for estimation of all
volume and surface tensors and certain mean curvature tensors are given. This
requires an extension of the known asymptotic formulas to estimators with
position dependent weights.Comment: 15 page
