Creative use of BIPV materials: barriers and solutions

Inventive use of photovoltaic (PV) materials in architecture can be developed through use of PV in artworks. This is particularly important in increasing the uptake of building-integrated building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), by developing novel methods of combining and installing PV materials. Current examples of PV artwork and design are examined, from small to large scale, to assess the current design limitations. The design of two PV artworks is discussed in detail, including an artwork that uses the principle of the luminescent solar concentrator (LSC), to show the way in which design hurdles are discovered and overcome. Challenges range from difficulties in obtaining small quantities of PV materials; the balance between efficiency and artistic effect; through to technical and siting issues that an artist must address when designing a functional PV structure. Methods of overcoming these barriers are explored, including the use of lumogen dyes in encapsulant materials

The Battle of Emmaus and 1 Maccabees' Creative Use of Martial Law

Forty thousand infantry prepared for battle slowly march south toward Judea from the Seleucid capital in Antioch. They are joined by seven thousand cavalry with a single command: destroy Judea. Upon reaching the land they make camp at Emmaus and wait for a rather small band of Judean rebels to respond. Such is the opening scene of the battle of Emmaus, one of the many skirmishes descri- bed in 1 Maccabees. Typically, the invading force led by Seleucid courtiers, is im- mense, well-armed, and seemingly invincible. The point is underlined by the ar- rival of slavers and mercenaries from the nations roundabout seeking to earn a share of the spoils of victory that will surely present themselves. The small force of three thousand Judeans is presented as poorly armed and frightened, as usual. Yet, by tactical superiority and implied divine assistance Judas Maccabeus and his followers rout the invading army and enrich themselves by plunder, again as usual. This set of events, richly described in 1 Macc 3:38–4:25 will be the basis of our discussion of the interpretation of martial law in 1 Maccabees. We will seek to show that the description of this battle is rich with examples of both the realization of legal text in narrative and the understanding of narra- tive text as law

While the inherent utopianism of Washington Gladden \'s social gospel cannot be revived, his theology provides useful insights into the creative use of scientific and religious discourse for a contemporary democratic theology in search of the common good

How ECS Improve Creative Use of Employees’ Knowledge?

Recently, organizations are using crowdsourcing systems (CSs) to collect innovative ideas from their employees harnessing their insights of companies’ products, processes, customers, and competitors. While crowd workers in third-party CSs are a diverse and multifaceted population with a range of motives and experience, and yet few researchers have grappled with the facilitators of the employees’ behavior comprising the creative application of their knowledge using enterprise CSs. This study develops a theoretical framework to identify enterprise CSs role and to provide the way how CSs are related to creative behavior via knowledge sharing. In this research, we used a survey to collect data from organizational employees and conducted data analysis to understand how enterprise CSs affect employees’ creative knowledge application. The findings of this study can help organization refine their ECSs and innovative initiatives

Conceptualizing Creative Use: An Examination of the Construct and its Determinants

Organizations depend on the creativity of their employees in order to get the best possible outcome from the technologies that have been put into place. Yet IT research exhibits few studies in understanding the types of behaviors that yield new and useful ways of using organizational systems. This research therefore examines the creative use of technologies by individuals, that is, the implementation of novel and useful ways of applying organizational systems to solving business problems. Drawing on a well-established body of literature on creativity/innovation, a theory-based conceptualization of creative use is developed. Creative use is then assessed as the dependent variable in the context of Bandura\u27s (1986) self-efficacy theory, which posits the necessity of domain-related self-efficacy and knowledge as prerequisites for creative use. The results support the theorized model and further suggest that breadth of knowledge is the most influential for creative use

A Compilation Target for Probabilistic Programming Languages

Forward inference techniques such as sequential Monte Carlo and particle Markov chain Monte Carlo for probabilistic programming can be implemented in any programming language by creative use of standardized operating system functionality including processes, forking, mutexes, and shared memory. Exploiting this we have defined, developed, and tested a probabilistic programming language intermediate representation language we call probabilistic C, which itself can be compiled to machine code by standard compilers and linked to operating system libraries yielding an efficient, scalable, portable probabilistic programming compilation target.
