Sound of Ikebana: Creation of Media Art Based on Fluid Dynamics

We have been working on the creation of media art, utilizing technologies. As fluids create beautiful forms under various conditions, we have been trying to utilize fluid dynamics as a basis for creating media art. However, most of the visualization results of the fluid dynamics show only stable fluid behaviors and lack of unstable or, in other words, unpredictable behaviors that would be significant in the creation of art. To create various unstable or unpredictable fluid behaviors, we have developed and introduced a new method called "Sound Vibration Form (SVF)" to control fluid behaviors and created amedia art called "Sound of Ikebana." Interestingly, people find and feel Japanese beauty in media art, although itis created based on a natural phenomenon. This paper proposes the basic concept of media art based on fluid dynamics, describes details of the SVF to create unpredictable fluid dynamics-based phenomena, and a new media art called "Sound of Ikebana" created utilizing SVF. Also, we will discuss the relationship between Japanese beauty and physical phenomena represented by fluid dynamics

A three person poncho and a set of maracas:designing Ola De La Vida, a co-located social play computer game

Events that bring people together to play video games as a social experience are growing in popularity across the western world. Amongst these events are ‘play parties,’ temporary social play environments which create unique shared play experiences for attendees unlike anything they could experience elsewhere. This paper explores co-located play experience design and proposes that social play games can lead to the formation of temporary play communities. These communities may last for a single gameplay session, for a whole event, or beyond the event. The paper analyses games designed or enhanced by social play contexts and evaluates a social play game, Ola de la Vida. The research findings suggest that social play games can foster community through the design of game play within the game itself, through curation which enhances their social potential, and through design for ‘semi-spectatorship’, which blurs the boundaries between player and spectator thus widening the game’s magic circle

Knowledge will Propel Machine Understanding of Content: Extrapolating from Current Examples

Machine Learning has been a big success story during the AI resurgence. One particular stand out success relates to learning from a massive amount of data. In spite of early assertions of the unreasonable effectiveness of data, there is increasing recognition for utilizing knowledge whenever it is available or can be created purposefully. In this paper, we discuss the indispensable role of knowledge for deeper understanding of content where (i) large amounts of training data are unavailable, (ii) the objects to be recognized are complex, (e.g., implicit entities and highly subjective content), and (iii) applications need to use complementary or related data in multiple modalities/media. What brings us to the cusp of rapid progress is our ability to (a) create relevant and reliable knowledge and (b) carefully exploit knowledge to enhance ML/NLP techniques. Using diverse examples, we seek to foretell unprecedented progress in our ability for deeper understanding and exploitation of multimodal data and continued incorporation of knowledge in learning techniques.Comment: Pre-print of the paper accepted at 2017 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI). arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1610.0770

    The virtual environment display system

Virtual environment technology is a display and control technology that can surround a person in an interactive computer generated or computer mediated virtual environment. It has evolved at NASA-Ames since 1984 to serve NASA's missions and goals. The exciting potential of this technology, sometimes called Virtual Reality, Artificial Reality, or Cyberspace, has been recognized recently by the popular media, industry, academia, and government organizations. Much research and development will be necessary to bring it to fruition

Lecture Notes in Computer Science book series (LNCS, volume 13477)21st IFIP TC 14 International Conference, ICEC 2022, Bremen, Germany, November 1–3, 2022, ProceedingsArt is an essential part of the entertainment. As 3D entertainment such as 3D games is a trend, it is an exciting topic how to create 3D artworks from 2D artworks. In this work, we investigate the 3D reconstruction problem of the artwork called “Sound of Ikebana, ” which is created by shooting fluid phenomena using a high-speed camera and can create organic, sophisticated, and complex forms. Firstly, we used the Phase Only Correlation method to capture the artwork’s point cloud based on the images captured by multiple high-speed cameras. Then we create a 3D model by a deep learning-based approach from the 2D Sound of Ikebana images. Our result shows that we can apply deep learning techniques to improve the reconstruction of 3D modeling from 2D images with highly complicated forms
