    Video content analysis and retrieval system using video storytelling and indexing techniques

    Videos are used often for communicating ideas, concepts, experience, and situations, because of the significant advances made in video communication technology. The social media platforms enhanced the video usage expeditiously. At, present, recognition of a video is done, using the metadata like video title, video descriptions, and video thumbnails. There are situations like video searcher requires only a video clip on a specific topic from a long video. This paper proposes a novel methodology for the analysis of video content and using video storytelling and indexing techniques for the retrieval of the intended video clip from a long duration video. Video storytelling technique is used for video content analysis and to produce a description of the video. The video description thus created is used for preparation of an index using wormhole algorithm, guarantying the search of a keyword of definite length L, within the minimum worst-case time. This video index can be used by video searching algorithm to retrieve the relevant part of the video by virtue of the frequency of the word in the keyword search of the video index. Instead of downloading and transferring a whole video, the user can download or transfer the specifically necessary video clip. The network constraints associated with the transfer of videos are considerably addressed

    Remote sensing image captioning with pre-trained transformer models

    Remote sensing images, and the unique properties that characterize them, are attracting increased attention from computer vision researchers, largely due to their many possible applications. The area of computer vision for remote sensing has effectively seen many recent advances, e.g. in tasks such as object detection or scene classification. Recent work in the area has also addressed the task of generating a natural language description of a given remote sensing image, effectively combining techniques from both natural language processing and computer vision. Despite some previously published results, there nonetheless are still many limitations and possibilities for improvement. It remains challenging to generate text that is fluid and linguistically rich while maintaining semantic consistency and good discrimination ability about the objects and visual patterns that should be described. The previous proposals that have come closest to achieving the goals of remote sensing image captioning have used neural encoder-decoder architectures, often including specialized attention mechanisms to help the system in integrating the most relevant visual features while generating the textual descriptions. Taking previous work into consideration, this work proposes a new approach for remote sensing image captioning, using an encoder-decoder model based on the Transformer architecture, and where both the encoder and the decoder are based on components from a pre-existing model that was already trained with large amounts of data. Experiments were carried out using the three main datasets that exist for assessing remote sensing image captioning methods, respectively the Sydney-captions, the \acrshort{UCM}-captions, and the \acrshort{RSICD} datasets. The results show improvements over some previous proposals, although particularly on the larger \acrshort{RSICD} dataset they are still far from the current state-of-art methods. A careful analysis of the results also points to some limitations in the current evaluation methodology, mostly based on automated n-gram overlap metrics such as BLEU or ROUGE

    Text-image synergy for multimodal retrieval and annotation

    Text and images are the two most common data modalities found on the Internet. Understanding the synergy between text and images, that is, seamlessly analyzing information from these modalities may be trivial for humans, but is challenging for software systems. In this dissertation we study problems where deciphering text-image synergy is crucial for finding solutions. We propose methods and ideas that establish semantic connections between text and images in multimodal contents, and empirically show their effectiveness in four interconnected problems: Image Retrieval, Image Tag Refinement, Image-Text Alignment, and Image Captioning. Während es für Menschen einfach ist, gerade aus dem Zusammenspiel von Text- und Bildinhalten Informationen zu erfassen, stellt diese kombinierte Darstellung von Inhalten Softwaresysteme vor große Herausforderungen. In dieser Dissertation werden Probleme studiert, für deren Lösung das Verständnis des Zusammenspiels von Text- und Bildinhalten wesentlich ist. Es werden Methoden und Vorschläge präsentiert und empirisch bewertet, die semantische Verbindungen zwischen Text und Bild in multimodalen Daten herstellen. Wir stellen in dieser Dissertation vier miteinander verbundene Text- und Bildprobleme vor: • Bildersuche. Ob Bilder anhand von textbasierten Suchanfragen gefunden werden, hängt stark davon ab, ob der Text in der Nähe des Bildes mit dem der Anfrage übereinstimmt. Bilder ohne textuellen Kontext, oder sogar mit thematisch passendem Kontext, aber ohne direkte Übereinstimmungen der vorhandenen Schlagworte zur Suchanfrage, können häufig nicht gefunden werden. Zur Abhilfe schlagen wir vor, drei Arten von Informationen in Kombination zu nutzen: visuelle Informationen (in Form von automatisch generierten Bildbeschreibungen), textuelle Informationen (Stichworte aus vorangegangenen Suchanfragen), und Alltagswissen. • Verbesserte Bildbeschreibungen. Bei der Objekterkennung durch Computer Vision kommt es des Öfteren zu Fehldetektionen und Inkohärenzen. Die korrekte Identifikation von Bildinhalten ist jedoch eine wichtige Voraussetzung für die Suche nach Bildern mittels textueller Suchanfragen. Um die Fehleranfälligkeit bei der Objekterkennung zu minimieren, schlagen wir vor Alltagswissen einzubeziehen. Durch zusätzliche Bild-Annotationen, welche sich durch den gesunden Menschenverstand als thematisch passend erweisen, können viele fehlerhafte und zusammenhanglose Erkennungen vermieden werden. • Bild-Text Platzierung. Auf Internetseiten mit Text- und Bildinhalten (wie Nachrichtenseiten, Blogbeiträge, Artikel in sozialen Medien) werden Bilder in der Regel an semantisch sinnvollen Positionen im Textfluss platziert. Wir nutzen dies um ein Framework vorzuschlagen, in dem relevante Bilder ausgesucht werden und mit den passenden Abschnitten eines Textes assoziiert werden. • Bildunterschriften. Bilder, die als Teil von multimodalen Inhalten zur Verbesserung der Lesbarkeit von Texten dienen, haben typischerweise Bildunterschriften, die zum Kontext des umgebenden Texts passen. Wir schlagen vor, den Kontext beim automatischen Generieren von Bildunterschriften ebenfalls einzubeziehen. Üblicherweise werden hierfür die Bilder allein analysiert. Wir stellen die kontextbezogene Bildunterschriftengenerierung vor. Unsere vielversprechenden Beobachtungen und Ergebnisse eröffnen interessante Möglichkeiten für weitergehende Forschung zur computergestützten Erfassung des Zusammenspiels von Text- und Bildinhalten

    Word Importance Modeling to Enhance Captions Generated by Automatic Speech Recognition for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Users

    People who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) benefit from sign-language interpreting or live-captioning (with a human transcriptionist), to access spoken information. However, such services are not legally required, affordable, nor available in many settings, e.g., impromptu small-group meetings in the workplace or online video content that has not been professionally captioned. As Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems improve in accuracy and speed, it is natural to investigate the use of these systems to assist DHH users in a variety of tasks. But, ASR systems are still not perfect, especially in realistic conversational settings, leading to the issue of trust and acceptance of these systems from the DHH community. To overcome these challenges, our work focuses on: (1) building metrics for accurately evaluating the quality of automatic captioning systems, and (2) designing interventions for improving the usability of captions for DHH users. The first part of this dissertation describes our research on methods for identifying words that are important for understanding the meaning of a conversational turn within transcripts of spoken dialogue. Such knowledge about the relative importance of words in spoken messages can be used in evaluating ASR systems (in part 2 of this dissertation) or creating new applications for DHH users of captioned video (in part 3 of this dissertation). We found that models which consider both the acoustic properties of spoken words as well as text-based features (e.g., pre-trained word embeddings) are more effective at predicting the semantic importance of a word than models that utilize only one of these types of features. The second part of this dissertation describes studies to understand DHH users\u27 perception of the quality of ASR-generated captions; the goal of this work was to validate the design of automatic metrics for evaluating captions in real-time applications for these users. Such a metric could facilitate comparison of various ASR systems, for determining the suitability of specific ASR systems for supporting communication for DHH users. We designed experimental studies to elicit feedback on the quality of captions from DHH users, and we developed and evaluated automatic metrics for predicting the usability of automatically generated captions for these users. We found that metrics that consider the importance of each word in a text are more effective at predicting the usability of imperfect text captions than the traditional Word Error Rate (WER) metric. The final part of this dissertation describes research on importance-based highlighting of words in captions, as a way to enhance the usability of captions for DHH users. Similar to highlighting in static texts (e.g., textbooks or electronic documents), highlighting in captions involves changing the appearance of some texts in caption to enable readers to attend to the most important bits of information quickly. Despite the known benefits of highlighting in static texts, research on the usefulness of highlighting in captions for DHH users is largely unexplored. For this reason, we conducted experimental studies with DHH participants to understand the benefits of importance-based highlighting in captions, and their preference on different design configurations for highlighting in captions. We found that DHH users subjectively preferred highlighting in captions, and they reported higher readability and understandability scores and lower task-load scores when viewing videos with captions containing highlighting compared to the videos without highlighting. Further, in partial contrast to recommendations in prior research on highlighting in static texts (which had not been based on experimental studies with DHH users), we found that DHH participants preferred boldface, word-level, non-repeating highlighting in captions

    Foundations and Recent Trends in Multimodal Machine Learning: Principles, Challenges, and Open Questions

    Multimodal machine learning is a vibrant multi-disciplinary research field that aims to design computer agents with intelligent capabilities such as understanding, reasoning, and learning through integrating multiple communicative modalities, including linguistic, acoustic, visual, tactile, and physiological messages. With the recent interest in video understanding, embodied autonomous agents, text-to-image generation, and multisensor fusion in application domains such as healthcare and robotics, multimodal machine learning has brought unique computational and theoretical challenges to the machine learning community given the heterogeneity of data sources and the interconnections often found between modalities. However, the breadth of progress in multimodal research has made it difficult to identify the common themes and open questions in the field. By synthesizing a broad range of application domains and theoretical frameworks from both historical and recent perspectives, this paper is designed to provide an overview of the computational and theoretical foundations of multimodal machine learning. We start by defining two key principles of modality heterogeneity and interconnections that have driven subsequent innovations, and propose a taxonomy of 6 core technical challenges: representation, alignment, reasoning, generation, transference, and quantification covering historical and recent trends. Recent technical achievements will be presented through the lens of this taxonomy, allowing researchers to understand the similarities and differences across new approaches. We end by motivating several open problems for future research as identified by our taxonomy

    Neural Natural Language Generation: A Survey on Multilinguality, Multimodality, Controllability and Learning

    Developing artificial learning systems that can understand and generate natural language has been one of the long-standing goals of artificial intelligence. Recent decades have witnessed an impressive progress on both of these problems, giving rise to a new family of approaches. Especially, the advances in deep learning over the past couple of years have led to neural approaches to natural language generation (NLG). These methods combine generative language learning techniques with neural-networks based frameworks. With a wide range of applications in natural language processing, neural NLG (NNLG) is a new and fast growing field of research. In this state-of-the-art report, we investigate the recent developments and applications of NNLG in its full extent from a multidimensional view, covering critical perspectives such as multimodality, multilinguality, controllability and learning strategies. We summarize the fundamental building blocks of NNLG approaches from these aspects and provide detailed reviews of commonly used preprocessing steps and basic neural architectures. This report also focuses on the seminal applications of these NNLG models such as machine translation, description generation, automatic speech recognition, abstractive summarization, text simplification, question answering and generation, and dialogue generation.     Multi-view Representation Learning for Unifying Languages, Knowledge and Vision

    The growth of content on the web has raised various challenges, yet also provided numerous opportunities. Content exists in varied forms such as text appearing in different languages, entity-relationship graph represented as structured knowledge and as a visual embodiment like images/videos. They are often referred to as modalities. In many instances, the different amalgamation of modalities co-exists to complement each other or to provide consensus. Thus making the content either heterogeneous or homogeneous. Having an additional point of view for each instance in the content is beneficial for data-driven learning and intelligent content processing. However, despite having availability of such content. Most advancements made in data-driven learning (i.e., machine learning) is by solving tasks separately for the single modality. The similar endeavor was not shown for the challenges which required input either from all or subset of them. In this dissertation, we develop models and techniques that can leverage multiple views of heterogeneous or homogeneous content and build a shared representation for aiding several applications which require a combination of modalities mentioned above. In particular, we aim to address applications such as content-based search, categorization, and generation by providing several novel contributions. First, we develop models for heterogeneous content by jointly modeling diverse representations emerging from two views depicting text and image by learning their correlation. To be specific, modeling such correlation is helpful to retrieve cross-modal content. Second, we replace the heterogeneous content with homogeneous to learn a common space representation for content categorization across languages. Furthermore, we develop models that take input from both homogeneous and heterogeneous content to facilitate the construction of common space representation from more than two views. Specifically, representation is used to generate one view from another. Lastly, we describe a model that can handle missing views, and demonstrate that the model can generate missing views by utilizing external knowledge. We argue that techniques the models leverage internally provide many practical benefits and lot of immediate value applications. From the modeling perspective, our contributed model design in this thesis can be summarized under the phrase Multi-view Representation Learning( MVRL ). These models are variations and extensions of shallow statistical and deep neural networks approaches that can jointly optimize and exploit all views of the input content arising from different independent representations. We show that our models advance state of the art, but not limited to tasks such as cross-modal retrieval, cross-language text classification, image-caption generation in multiple languages and caption generation for images containing unseen visual object categories
