Smiles are a fundamental facial expression for successful human-agent communication. The growing number of publications in this domain presents an opportunity for future research and design to be informed by a scoping review of the extant literature. This semi-automated review expedites the first steps toward the mapping of Virtual Human (VH) smile research. This paper contributes an overview of the status quo of VH smile research, identifies research streams through cluster analysis, identifies prolific authors in the field, and provides evidence that a full scoping review is needed to synthesize the findings in the expanding domain of VH smile research. To enable collaboration, we provide full access to the refined VH smile dataset, key word and author word clouds, as well as interactive evidence maps.</p

Your Words or Mine: Discourse Conflicts for Speakers of African American English

    Get PDF
This qualitative action research study captured the voices of middle school students as they talked about being first language speakers of AAE and their efforts to appropriate SAE as a marker of school success. The following compelling questions were at the forefront of this study: How do middle school students use talk and other modalities to construct and represent meaning related to the use of African American English and Standard American English? In what ways are the complexities of African American youths’ identities revealed through their use of African American English and Standard American English? How does social interaction during writing activities inform the ideas expressed by African American middle school students who are speakers of African American English? In what ways do my teacher beliefs and practices as a speaker of African American English Language construct language ideologies in the Language Arts classroom? Participants took part in C.H.A.T. Academy: Children Having Academic Talks about languages, dialect and identity. C.H.A.T. Academy provided an academic space for students to exchange organic dialogue about how they form agency around their language ideologies and identify themselves as speakers in academic settings. The aim of the chats was to see how middle school students would interact socially during talks about the role African American English and Standard American English plays in their discourse. An additional purpose of this study was to examine how these conversations about language would shape the ideas expressed during oral and written activities

Looking at the Interactive Narrative Experience through the Eyes of the Participants.

The topic of interactive narrative has been under research for many years. While there has been much research exploring the development of new algorithms that enable and enhance interactive narratives, there has been little research focusing on the question of how players understand and internalize their interactive narrative experiences. This paper addresses this problem through conducting a phenomenological study on participants playing Façade; we specifically chose a phenomenological methodology due to its emphasis on the participants‟ lived experience from the participants‟ viewpoint. We chose Façade, because it is the only accessible example of an experience that revolves around social relationships, conflict, and drama as its core mechanics. In this paper, we discuss sixteen themes that resulted from the analysis of the data gathered through the study. In addition, we reflect on these themes discussing their relationship to participants‟ backgrounds, and project implications on the design of future interactive narratives

Sapto Kuncoro . 2010. The Analysis of Compliment Expression in The Film Entitled White Chicks. Thesis: English Department of Non-Regular program. Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts. Sebelas Maret University. This research focuses on the compliments used by the characters in the film entitled white chicks. This research was conducted to describe the types of topics of compliment employed by the characters in the film entitled white chicks, the functions of each type of topics of compliment, and also the compliment responses expressed by the addressees in the film. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. This research uses a socio-pragmatics approach. The technique of sampling used is total sampling. All conversations containing compliments and compliment responses were taken as data. Based on the data analysis, the researcher draws conclusions as follows: There are four types of topics of compliment employed by the characters in the film entitled white chicks, namely, personal appearance, possession, general ability, and specific-act ability. Following Wolfson’s classification of compliment functions, there are six functions of compliment proposed by Wolfson found in this research, namely to affirm solidarity, to create or maintain rapport, to express admiration or approval, to encourage, to express positive evaluation, to strengthen or to replace other speech act formulas. Most of the addressees in the film entitled white chicks respond to the compliments by employing appreciation token. The appreciation token includes verbal and nonverbal acceptance. In verbal acceptance, the addressees deliver the word thanks to respond to the speaker’s compliment. Meanwhile, the addressees respond to the compliment by smiling in the non-verbal acceptance. Other compliment responses used by the addressees are comment acceptance, praise upgrade, down grade, reassignment, question and no acknowledgement. In the comment acceptance, the addressees accept the compliment and offer a relevant comment on the compliment. In the Praise upgrade, the addressee accepts and asserts insufficiently of the compliment’s force. Meanwhile, in down grade, the addressee disagrees to the speaker’s compliment because the object of compliment is not worth. In response of question, the addressee questions the sincerity or the appropriateness of the speaker’s compliment. Finally, in No acknowledgement, the addressees give no indication of having heard the compliment, shift the topic, and even give no response. Based on the conclusions above, the researcher hopes that this research gives a contribution to the students in studying the speech act of compliments. There are still many cases on the study of compliments. It is suggested to other researchers who are interested in Socio-Pragmatics study to conduct a further research on compliments structure and its vocabulary

© 2019, © 2019 Ayu Susan Mckie and Bhuva Narayan. This paper explores the potential of using chatbots to improve the academic research experience for university students with a literature-based discussion reflecting on a prototype being developed at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). The paper proposes that information professionals need to adapt emerging technologies such as chatbots to innovate, improve and support library services. Designing a positive experience for the user is essential to ensure that such technological solutions are sustainable. In this exploratory paper, we argue that it is important that librarians engage with the conversational design of the library chatbot in collaboration with the technology developers in order to make it useful, friendly, trustworthy, and customisable for university students
