Operational Design And Modelling Of Fire Event Tracking System In Wireless Sensor Networks

In recent years, WSNs have been widely used for monitoring of environmental changes as they are capable of combining their sensing of a phenomenon with their computational functions and operate with limited resources to accomplish an intended task. Sensors can cooperatively monitor the surrounding environment and provide data that help in realizing the time evolution of the phenomenon and anticipating its effects. Consequently, such information would facilitate performing control actions that meet the predetermined goals. As distributed computing enables the exchange of real time data statistics obtained from various sources that need to be combined together to infer real abnormal conditions for management decisions. As tracking of an event depends on the event type, high-accuracy localization of an event such as fire is a serious challenge, where most of traditional detection systems depend on visualization (cameras) in making their control decision. Moreover, those systems concern the continuous detection of fire and do not provide reliable and feasible mechanism for tracking fire spread. This paper presents the design and modelling of a fire event tracking system that consists of indoor distributed sensor nodes and a powerful intelligent processing unit (controller) to detect fire events and compute information to provide desired safety decisions. Whenever the temperature in a premise increases, the system deploys cooperative centralized control functions to collect and process data statistics related to the fire. It exchanges direction, velocity, and/or position to take proper decision such as evacuating people from fire areas to a safe exit

Ant colony optimization approaches in wireless sensor network: Performance evaluation

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has been widely implemented in large sectors such as military, habitat, business, industrial, health and environment. WSN is part of a distributed system where elements such as routing, load balancing, energy efficiency, node localization, time synchronization, data aggregation and security need to be addressed to improve its efficiency, robustness, extendibility, applicability and reliability. Despite multiple approaches proposed to improve all these aspects, there is still room for improvement in order to enhance the capability of WSN in terms of routing and energy efficiency. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is one of the approaches used to extend WSN capabilities because its heuristic nature is very suitable with distributed and dynamic environments. This study covers the common WSN aspects and performance evaluation criteria in addition to the list of previous studies that have used ACO approaches in WSN

International audienceMobile devices currently available on the market have a plethoraof features and enough computing power to make them, at the same time, information consumers, forwarders and producers. Since they are also providedwith a set of sensors and usually battery operating, they are perfect candidatesto devise a network infrastructure tailored to function during disruptive events. When everything else fails, they could autonomously reorganize and provide tothe civilians and rescue teams valuable services and information. In this paperwe adapt and enhance a previous designed framework, capable to epidemicallydiuse the proper software updates to its nodes, in order to deploy any kind ofservice as a prompt response to the needs raised in emergency situations. Wefurther propose and integrate a new smart positioning strategy, to speed up thediusion of software updates by also keeping under control the overall networkoverhead. The achieved results show the feasibility of our proposal and howthe dynamics of diusion are enhanced by the smart positioning algorithm

Controlled Mobility Sensor Networks for Target Tracking Using Ant Colony Optimization

International audienceIn mobile sensor networks, it is important to manage the mobility of the nodes in order to improve the performances of the network. This paper addresses the problem of single target tracking in controlled mobility sensor networks. The proposed method consists of estimating the current position of a single target. Estimated positions are then used to predict the following location of the target. Once an area of interest is defined, the proposed approach consists of moving the mobile nodes in order to cover it in an optimal way. It thus defines a strategy for choosing the set of new sensors locations. Each node is then assigned one position within the set in the way to minimize the total traveled distance by the nodes. While the estimation and the prediction phases are performed using the interval theory, relocating nodes employs the ant colony optimization algorithm. Simulations results corroborate the efficiency of the proposed method compared to the target tracking methods considered for networks with static nodes
