    Dental Biometrics: Human Identification Using Dental Radiograph

    Biometric is the science and innovation of measuring and analyzing biological information.In information technology, biometric refers to advancements that measures and analyzes human body attributes,for example,DNA, eye retinas, fingerprints and irises,face pattern,voice patterns,and hand geometry estimations,for identification purposes.The primary motivation behind scientific dentistry is to distinguish expired people,for whom different method for recognizable proof(e.g.,unique finger impression,face,and so on.)are not accessible.Dental elements survives most of the PM events which may disrupt or change other body tissues,e.g. casualties of motor vehicles mishaps,fierce violations,and work place accident,whose bodies could be deformed to such a degree,that identification even by a family member is neither desirable nor reliable.Dental Biometric utilises dental radiographs to distinguish casualties.The radiographs procured after the casualty's demise are called post-mortem radiograph and the radiograph obtained when the casualty was alive is called ante-mortem radiograph.The objective of dental biometric is to match the unidentified individual's post-mortem radiograph against a database of labelled antemortem radiograph.This thesis proposes a novel method for the contour extraction from dental radiographs.The proposed algorithm of Active Contour Model or the Snake model is used for this purpose. A correctly detected contour is essential for proper feature extraction.This thesis only works on the contour detection.The method has been tested on some radiographs images and is found to produce desired output.However,the input radiograph image may be of low quality,may suffer a clear separation between two adjacent teeth.In that case the method will not be able to produce a satisfactory result.There is a need of pre-processing(e.g. contrast enhancement) before the active contour detection model can be applie

    Advancing iris biometric technology

    PhD ThesisThe iris biometric is a well-established technology which is already in use in several nation-scale applications and it is still an active research area with several unsolved problems. This work focuses on three key problems in iris biometrics namely: segmentation, protection and cross-matching. Three novel methods in each of these areas are proposed and analyzed thoroughly. In terms of iris segmentation, a novel iris segmentation method is designed based on a fusion of an expanding and a shrinking active contour by integrating a new pressure force within the Gradient Vector Flow (GVF) active contour model. In addition, a new method for closed eye detection is proposed. The experimental results on the CASIA V4, MMU2, UBIRIS V1 and UBIRIS V2 databases show that the proposed method achieves state-of-theart results in terms of segmentation accuracy and recognition performance while being computationally more efficient. In this context, improvements by 60.5%, 42% and 48.7% are achieved in segmentation accuracy for the CASIA V4, MMU2 and UBIRIS V1 databases, respectively. For the UBIRIS V2 database, a superior time reduction is reported (85.7%) while maintaining a similar accuracy. Similarly, considerable time improvements by 63.8%, 56.6% and 29.3% are achieved for the CASIA V4, MMU2 and UBIRIS V1 databases, respectively. With respect to iris biometric protection, a novel security architecture is designed to protect the integrity of iris images and templates using watermarking and Visual Cryptography (VC). Firstly, for protecting the iris image, text which carries personal information is embedded in the middle band frequency region of the iris image using a novel watermarking algorithm that randomly interchanges multiple middle band pairs of the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). Secondly, for iris template protection, VC is utilized to protect the iii iris template. In addition, the integrity of the stored template in the biometric smart card is guaranteed by using the hash signatures. The proposed method has a minimal effect on the iris recognition performance of only 3.6% and 4.9% for the CASIA V4 and UBIRIS V1 databases, respectively. In addition, the VC scheme is designed to be readily applied to protect any biometric binary template without any degradation to the recognition performance with a complexity of only O(N). As for cross-spectral matching, a framework is designed which is capable of matching iris images in different lighting conditions. The first method is designed to work with registered iris images where the key idea is to synthesize the corresponding Near Infra-Red (NIR) images from the Visible Light (VL) images using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) while the second method is capable of working with unregistered iris images based on integrating the Gabor filter with different photometric normalization models and descriptors along with decision level fusion to achieve the cross-spectral matching. A significant improvement by 79.3% in cross-spectral matching performance is attained for the UTIRIS database. As for the PolyU database, the proposed verification method achieved an improvement by 83.9% in terms of NIR vs Red channel matching which confirms the efficiency of the proposed method. In summary, the most important open issues in exploiting the iris biometric are presented and novel methods to address these problems are proposed. Hence, this work will help to establish a more robust iris recognition system due to the development of an accurate segmentation method working for iris images taken under both the VL and NIR. In addition, the proposed protection scheme paves the way for a secure iris images and templates storage. Moreover, the proposed framework for cross-spectral matching will help to employ the iris biometric in several security applications such as surveillance at-a-distance and automated watch-list identification.Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Ira

    Three-dimensional reconstruction of peripheral nerve internal fascicular groups

    Peripheral nerves are important pathways for receiving afferent sensory impulses and sending out efferent motor instructions, as carried out by sensory nerve fibers and motor nerve fibers. It has remained a great challenge to functionally reconnect nerve internal fiber bundles (or fascicles) in nerve repair. One possible solution may be to establish a 3D nerve fascicle visualization system. This study described the key technology of 3D peripheral nerve fascicle reconstruction. Firstly, fixed nerve segments were embedded with position lines, cryostat-sectioned continuously, stained and imaged histologically. Position line cross-sections were identified using a trained support vector machine method, and the coordinates of their central pixels were obtained. Then, nerve section images were registered using the bilinear method, and edges of fascicles were extracted using an improved gradient vector flow snake method. Subsequently, fascicle types were identified automatically using the multi-directional gradient and second-order gradient method. Finally, a 3D virtual model of internal fascicles was obtained after section images were processed. This technique was successfully applied for 3D reconstruction for the median nerve of the hand-wrist and cubital fossa regions and the gastrocnemius nerve.     Skin Lesion Extraction And Its Application

    In this thesis, I study skin lesion detection and its applications to skin cancer diagnosis. A skin lesion detection algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based color information and threshold. For the proposed algorithm, several color spaces are studied and the detection results are compared. Experimental results show that YUV color space can achieve the best performance. Besides, I develop a distance histogram based threshold selection method and the method is proven to be better than other adaptive threshold selection methods for color detection. Besides the detection algorithms, I also investigate GPU speed-up techniques for skin lesion extraction and the results show that GPU has potential applications in speeding-up skin lesion extraction. Based on the skin lesion detection algorithms proposed, I developed a mobile-based skin cancer diagnosis application. In this application, the user with an iPhone installed with the proposed application can use the iPhone as a diagnosis tool to find the potential skin lesions in a persons\u27 skin and compare the skin lesions detected by the iPhone with the skin lesions stored in a database in a remote server

    Content-driven superpixels and their applications

    This thesis develops a new superpixel algorithm that displays excellent visual reconstruction of the original image. It achieves high stability across multiple random initialisations, achieved by producing superpixels directly corresponding to local image complexity. This is achieved by growing superpixels and dividing them on image variation. The existing analysis was not sufficient to take these properties into account so new measures of oversegmentation provide new insight into the optimum superpixel representation. As a consequence of the algorithm, it was discovered that CDS has properties that have eluded previous attempts, such as initialisation invariance and stability. The completely unsupervised nature of CDS makes them highly suitable for tasks such as application to a database containing images of unknown complexity. These new superpixel properties have allowed new applications for superpixel pre-processing to be produced. These are image segmentation; image compression; scene classification; and focus detection. In addition, a new method of objectively analysing regions of focus has been developed using Light-Field photography

    Adaptive object segmentation and tracking

    Efficient tracking of deformable objects moving with variable velocities is an important current research problem. In this thesis a robust tracking model is proposed for the automatic detection, recognition and tracking of target objects which are subject to variable orientations and velocities and are viewed under variable ambient lighting conditions. The tracking model can be applied to efficiently track fast moving vehicles and other objects in various complex scenarios. The tracking model is evaluated on both colour visible band and infra-red band video sequences acquired from the air by the Sussex police helicopter and other collaborators. The observations made validate the improved performance of the model over existing methods. The thesis is divided in three major sections. The first section details the development of an enhanced active contour for object segmentation. The second section describes an implementation of a global active contour orientation model. The third section describes the tracking model and assesses it performance on the aerial video sequences. In the first part of the thesis an enhanced active contour snake model using the difference of Gaussian (DoG) filter is reported and discussed in detail. An acquisition method based on the enhanced active contour method developed that can assist the proposed tracking system is tested. The active contour model is further enhanced by the use of a disambiguation framework designed to assist multiple object segmentation which is used to demonstrate that the enhanced active contour model can be used for robust multiple object segmentation and tracking. The active contour model developed not only facilitates the efficient update of the tracking filter but also decreases the latency involved in tracking targets in real-time. As far as computational effort is concerned, the active contour model presented improves the computational cost by 85% compared to existing active contour models. The second part of the thesis introduces the global active contour orientation (GACO) technique for statistical measurement of contoured object orientation. It is an overall object orientation measurement method which uses the proposed active contour model along with statistical measurement techniques. The use of the GACO technique, incorporating the active contour model, to measure object orientation angle is discussed in detail. A real-time door surveillance application based on the GACO technique is developed and evaluated on the i-LIDS door surveillance dataset provided by the UK Home Office. The performance results demonstrate the use of GACO to evaluate the door surveillance dataset gives a success rate of 92%. Finally, a combined approach involving the proposed active contour model and an optimal trade-off maximum average correlation height (OT-MACH) filter for tracking is presented. The implementation of methods for controlling the area of support of the OT-MACH filter is discussed in detail. The proposed active contour method as the area of support for the OT-MACH filter is shown to significantly improve the performance of the OT-MACH filter's ability to track vehicles moving within highly cluttered visible and infra-red band video sequence

    Gaze-Based Human-Robot Interaction by the Brunswick Model

    We present a new paradigm for human-robot interaction based on social signal processing, and in particular on the Brunswick model. Originally, the Brunswick model copes with face-to-face dyadic interaction, assuming that the interactants are communicating through a continuous exchange of non verbal social signals, in addition to the spoken messages. Social signals have to be interpreted, thanks to a proper recognition phase that considers visual and audio information. The Brunswick model allows to quantitatively evaluate the quality of the interaction using statistical tools which measure how effective is the recognition phase. In this paper we cast this theory when one of the interactants is a robot; in this case, the recognition phase performed by the robot and the human have to be revised w.r.t. the original model. The model is applied to Berrick, a recent open-source low-cost robotic head platform, where the gazing is the social signal to be considered
