    Exploration autonome et efficiente de chantiers miniers souterrains inconnus avec un drone filaire

    Abstract: Underground mining stopes are often mapped using a sensor located at the end of a pole that the operator introduces into the stope from a secure area. The sensor emits laser beams that provide the distance to a detected wall, thus creating a 3D map. This produces shadow zones and a low point density on the distant walls. To address these challenges, a research team from the Université de Sherbrooke is designing a tethered drone equipped with a rotating LiDAR for this mission, thus benefiting from several points of view. The wired transmission allows for unlimited flight time, shared computing, and real-time communication. For compatibility with the movement of the drone after tether entanglements, the excess length is integrated into an onboard spool, contributing to the drone payload. During manual piloting, the human factor causes problems in the perception and comprehension of a virtual 3D environment, as well as the execution of an optimal mission. This thesis focuses on autonomous navigation in two aspects: path planning and exploration. The system must compute a trajectory that maps the entire environment, minimizing the mission time and respecting the maximum onboard tether length. Path planning using a Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) quickly finds a feasible path, but the optimization is computationally expensive and the performance is variable and unpredictable. Exploration by the frontier method is representative of the space to be explored and the path can be optimized by solving a Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) but existing techniques for a tethered drone only consider the 2D case and do not optimize the global path. To meet these challenges, this thesis presents two new algorithms. The first one, RRT-Rope, produces an equal or shorter path than existing algorithms in a significantly shorter computation time, up to 70% faster than the next best algorithm in a representative environment. A modified version of RRT-connect computes a feasible path, shortened with a deterministic technique that takes advantage of previously added intermediate nodes. The second algorithm, TAPE, is the first 3D cavity exploration method that focuses on minimizing mission time and unwound tether length. On average, the overall path is 4% longer than the method that solves the TSP, but the tether remains under the allowed length in 100% of the simulated cases, compared to 53% with the initial method. The approach uses a 2-level hierarchical architecture: global planning solves a TSP after frontier extraction, and local planning minimizes the path cost and tether length via a decision function. The integration of these two tools in the NetherDrone produces an intelligent system for autonomous exploration, with semi-autonomous features for operator interaction. This work opens the door to new navigation approaches in the field of inspection, mapping, and Search and Rescue missions.La cartographie des chantiers miniers souterrains est souvent réalisée à l’aide d’un capteur situé au bout d’une perche que l’opérateur introduit dans le chantier, depuis une zone sécurisée. Le capteur émet des faisceaux laser qui fournissent la distance à un mur détecté, créant ainsi une carte en 3D. Ceci produit des zones d’ombres et une faible densité de points sur les parois éloignées. Pour relever ces défis, une équipe de recherche de l’Université de Sherbrooke conçoit un drone filaire équipé d’un LiDAR rotatif pour cette mission, bénéficiant ainsi de plusieurs points de vue. La transmission filaire permet un temps de vol illimité, un partage de calcul et une communication en temps réel. Pour une compatibilité avec le mouvement du drone lors des coincements du fil, la longueur excédante est intégrée dans une bobine embarquée, qui contribue à la charge utile du drone. Lors d’un pilotage manuel, le facteur humain entraîne des problèmes de perception et compréhension d’un environnement 3D virtuel, et d’exécution d’une mission optimale. Cette thèse se concentre sur la navigation autonome sous deux aspects : la planification de trajectoire et l’exploration. Le système doit calculer une trajectoire qui cartographie l’environnement complet, en minimisant le temps de mission et en respectant la longueur maximale de fil embarquée. La planification de trajectoire à l’aide d’un Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) trouve rapidement un chemin réalisable, mais l’optimisation est coûteuse en calcul et la performance est variable et imprévisible. L’exploration par la méthode des frontières est représentative de l’espace à explorer et le chemin peut être optimisé en résolvant un Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), mais les techniques existantes pour un drone filaire ne considèrent que le cas 2D et n’optimisent pas le chemin global. Pour relever ces défis, cette thèse présente deux nouveaux algorithmes. Le premier, RRT-Rope, produit un chemin égal ou plus court que les algorithmes existants en un temps de calcul jusqu’à 70% plus court que le deuxième meilleur algorithme dans un environnement représentatif. Une version modifiée de RRT-connect calcule un chemin réalisable, raccourci avec une technique déterministe qui tire profit des noeuds intermédiaires préalablement ajoutés. Le deuxième algorithme, TAPE, est la première méthode d’exploration de cavités en 3D qui minimise le temps de mission et la longueur du fil déroulé. En moyenne, le trajet global est 4% plus long que la méthode qui résout le TSP, mais le fil reste sous la longueur autorisée dans 100% des cas simulés, contre 53% avec la méthode initiale. L’approche utilise une architecture hiérarchique à 2 niveaux : la planification globale résout un TSP après extraction des frontières, et la planification locale minimise le coût du chemin et la longueur de fil via une fonction de décision. L’intégration de ces deux outils dans le NetherDrone produit un système intelligent pour l’exploration autonome, doté de fonctionnalités semi-autonomes pour une interaction avec l’opérateur.     Learning and Control of Dynamical Systems

    Despite the remarkable success of machine learning in various domains in recent years, our understanding of its fundamental limitations remains incomplete. This knowledge gap poses a grand challenge when deploying machine learning methods in critical decision-making tasks, where incorrect decisions can have catastrophic consequences. To effectively utilize these learning-based methods in such contexts, it is crucial to explicitly characterize their performance. Over the years, significant research efforts have been dedicated to learning and control of dynamical systems where the underlying dynamics are unknown or only partially known a priori, and must be inferred from collected data. However, much of these classical results have focused on asymptotic guarantees, providing limited insights into the amount of data required to achieve desired control performance while satisfying operational constraints such as safety and stability, especially in the presence of statistical noise. In this thesis, we study the statistical complexity of learning and control of unknown dynamical systems. By utilizing recent advances in statistical learning theory, high-dimensional statistics, and control theoretic tools, we aim to establish a fundamental understanding of the number of samples required to achieve desired (i) accuracy in learning the unknown dynamics, (ii) performance in the control of the underlying system, and (iii) satisfaction of the operational constraints such as safety and stability. We provide finite-sample guarantees for these objectives and propose efficient learning and control algorithms that achieve the desired performance at these statistical limits in various dynamical systems. Our investigation covers a broad range of dynamical systems, starting from fully observable linear dynamical systems to partially observable linear dynamical systems, and ultimately, nonlinear systems. We deploy our learning and control algorithms in various adaptive control tasks in real-world control systems and demonstrate their strong empirical performance along with their learning, robustness, and stability guarantees. In particular, we implement one of our proposed methods, Fourier Adaptive Learning and Control (FALCON), on an experimental aerodynamic testbed under extreme turbulent flow dynamics in a wind tunnel. The results show that FALCON achieves state-of-the-art stabilization performance and consistently outperforms conventional and other learning-based methods by at least 37%, despite using 8 times less data. The superior performance of FALCON arises from its physically and theoretically accurate modeling of the underlying nonlinear turbulent dynamics, which yields rigorous finite-sample learning and performance guarantees. These findings underscore the importance of characterizing the statistical complexity of learning and control of unknown dynamical systems.</p

    Efficient resilience analysis and decision-making for complex engineering systems

    Modern societies around the world are increasingly dependent on the smooth functionality of progressively more complex systems, such as infrastructure systems, digital systems like the internet, and sophisticated machinery. They form the cornerstones of our technologically advanced world and their efficiency is directly related to our well-being and the progress of society. However, these important systems are constantly exposed to a wide range of threats of natural, technological, and anthropogenic origin. The emergence of global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing threat of climate change have starkly illustrated the vulnerability of these widely ramified and interdependent systems, as well as the impossibility of predicting threats entirely. The pandemic, with its widespread and unexpected impacts, demonstrated how an external shock can bring even the most advanced systems to a standstill, while the ongoing climate change continues to produce unprecedented risks to system stability and performance. These global crises underscore the need for systems that can not only withstand disruptions, but also, recover from them efficiently and rapidly. The concept of resilience and related developments encompass these requirements: analyzing, balancing, and optimizing the reliability, robustness, redundancy, adaptability, and recoverability of systems -- from both technical and economic perspectives. This cumulative dissertation, therefore, focuses on developing comprehensive and efficient tools for resilience-based analysis and decision-making of complex engineering systems. The newly developed resilience decision-making procedure is at the core of these developments. It is based on an adapted systemic risk measure, a time-dependent probabilistic resilience metric, as well as a grid search algorithm, and represents a significant innovation as it enables decision-makers to identify an optimal balance between different types of resilience-enhancing measures, taking into account monetary aspects. Increasingly, system components have significant inherent complexity, requiring them to be modeled as systems themselves. Thus, this leads to systems-of-systems with a high degree of complexity. To address this challenge, a novel methodology is derived by extending the previously introduced resilience framework to multidimensional use cases and synergistically merging it with an established concept from reliability theory, the survival signature. The new approach combines the advantages of both original components: a direct comparison of different resilience-enhancing measures from a multidimensional search space leading to an optimal trade-off in terms of system resilience, and a significant reduction in computational effort due to the separation property of the survival signature. It enables that once a subsystem structure has been computed -- a typically computational expensive process -- any characterization of the probabilistic failure behavior of components can be validated without having to recompute the structure. In reality, measurements, expert knowledge, and other sources of information are loaded with multiple uncertainties. For this purpose, an efficient method based on the combination of survival signature, fuzzy probability theory, and non-intrusive stochastic simulation (NISS) is proposed. This results in an efficient approach to quantify the reliability of complex systems, taking into account the entire uncertainty spectrum. The new approach, which synergizes the advantageous properties of its original components, achieves a significant decrease in computational effort due to the separation property of the survival signature. In addition, it attains a dramatic reduction in sample size due to the adapted NISS method: only a single stochastic simulation is required to account for uncertainties. The novel methodology not only represents an innovation in the field of reliability analysis, but can also be integrated into the resilience framework. For a resilience analysis of existing systems, the consideration of continuous component functionality is essential. This is addressed in a further novel development. By introducing the continuous survival function and the concept of the Diagonal Approximated Signature as a corresponding surrogate model, the existing resilience framework can be usefully extended without compromising its fundamental advantages. In the context of the regeneration of complex capital goods, a comprehensive analytical framework is presented to demonstrate the transferability and applicability of all developed methods to complex systems of any type. The framework integrates the previously developed resilience, reliability, and uncertainty analysis methods. It provides decision-makers with the basis for identifying resilient regeneration paths in two ways: first, in terms of regeneration paths with inherent resilience, and second, regeneration paths that lead to maximum system resilience, taking into account technical and monetary factors affecting the complex capital good under analysis. In summary, this dissertation offers innovative contributions to efficient resilience analysis and decision-making for complex engineering systems. It presents universally applicable methods and frameworks that are flexible enough to consider system types and performance measures of any kind. This is demonstrated in numerous case studies ranging from arbitrary flow networks, functional models of axial compressors to substructured infrastructure systems with several thousand individual components.Moderne Gesellschaften sind weltweit zunehmend von der reibungslosen Funktionalität immer komplexer werdender Systeme, wie beispielsweise Infrastruktursysteme, digitale Systeme wie das Internet oder hochentwickelten Maschinen, abhängig. Sie bilden die Eckpfeiler unserer technologisch fortgeschrittenen Welt, und ihre Effizienz steht in direktem Zusammenhang mit unserem Wohlbefinden sowie dem Fortschritt der Gesellschaft. Diese wichtigen Systeme sind jedoch einer ständigen und breiten Palette von Bedrohungen natürlichen, technischen und anthropogenen Ursprungs ausgesetzt. Das Auftreten globaler Krisen wie die COVID-19-Pandemie und die anhaltende Bedrohung durch den Klimawandel haben die Anfälligkeit der weit verzweigten und voneinander abhängigen Systeme sowie die Unmöglichkeit einer Gefahrenvorhersage in voller Gänze eindrücklich verdeutlicht. Die Pandemie mit ihren weitreichenden und unerwarteten Auswirkungen hat gezeigt, wie ein externer Schock selbst die fortschrittlichsten Systeme zum Stillstand bringen kann, während der anhaltende Klimawandel immer wieder beispiellose Risiken für die Systemstabilität und -leistung hervorbringt. Diese globalen Krisen unterstreichen den Bedarf an Systemen, die nicht nur Störungen standhalten, sondern sich auch schnell und effizient von ihnen erholen können. Das Konzept der Resilienz und die damit verbundenen Entwicklungen umfassen diese Anforderungen: Analyse, Abwägung und Optimierung der Zuverlässigkeit, Robustheit, Redundanz, Anpassungsfähigkeit und Wiederherstellbarkeit von Systemen -- sowohl aus technischer als auch aus wirtschaftlicher Sicht. In dieser kumulativen Dissertation steht daher die Entwicklung umfassender und effizienter Instrumente für die Resilienz-basierte Analyse und Entscheidungsfindung von komplexen Systemen im Mittelpunkt. Das neu entwickelte Resilienz-Entscheidungsfindungsverfahren steht im Kern dieser Entwicklungen. Es basiert auf einem adaptierten systemischen Risikomaß, einer zeitabhängigen, probabilistischen Resilienzmetrik sowie einem Gittersuchalgorithmus und stellt eine bedeutende Innovation dar, da es Entscheidungsträgern ermöglicht, ein optimales Gleichgewicht zwischen verschiedenen Arten von Resilienz-steigernden Maßnahmen unter Berücksichtigung monetärer Aspekte zu identifizieren. Zunehmend weisen Systemkomponenten eine erhebliche Eigenkomplexität auf, was dazu führt, dass sie selbst als Systeme modelliert werden müssen. Hieraus ergeben sich Systeme aus Systemen mit hoher Komplexität. Um diese Herausforderung zu adressieren, wird eine neue Methodik abgeleitet, indem das zuvor eingeführte Resilienzrahmenwerk auf multidimensionale Anwendungsfälle erweitert und synergetisch mit einem etablierten Konzept aus der Zuverlässigkeitstheorie, der Überlebenssignatur, zusammengeführt wird. Der neue Ansatz kombiniert die Vorteile beider ursprünglichen Komponenten: Einerseits ermöglicht er einen direkten Vergleich verschiedener Resilienz-steigernder Maßnahmen aus einem mehrdimensionalen Suchraum, der zu einem optimalen Kompromiss in Bezug auf die Systemresilienz führt. Andererseits ermöglicht er durch die Separationseigenschaft der Überlebenssignatur eine signifikante Reduktion des Rechenaufwands. Sobald eine Subsystemstruktur berechnet wurde -- ein typischerweise rechenintensiver Prozess -- kann jede Charakterisierung des probabilistischen Ausfallverhaltens von Komponenten validiert werden, ohne dass die Struktur erneut berechnet werden muss. In der Realität sind Messungen, Expertenwissen sowie weitere Informationsquellen mit vielfältigen Unsicherheiten belastet. Hierfür wird eine effiziente Methode vorgeschlagen, die auf der Kombination von Überlebenssignatur, unscharfer Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie und nicht-intrusiver stochastischer Simulation (NISS) basiert. Dadurch entsteht ein effizienter Ansatz zur Quantifizierung der Zuverlässigkeit komplexer Systeme unter Berücksichtigung des gesamten Unsicherheitsspektrums. Der neue Ansatz, der die vorteilhaften Eigenschaften seiner ursprünglichen Komponenten synergetisch zusammenführt, erreicht eine bedeutende Verringerung des Rechenaufwands aufgrund der Separationseigenschaft der Überlebenssignatur. Er erzielt zudem eine drastische Reduzierung der Stichprobengröße aufgrund der adaptierten NISS-Methode: Es wird nur eine einzige stochastische Simulation benötigt, um Unsicherheiten zu berücksichtigen. Die neue Methodik stellt nicht nur eine Neuerung auf dem Gebiet der Zuverlässigkeitsanalyse dar, sondern kann auch in das Resilienzrahmenwerk integriert werden. Für eine Resilienzanalyse von real existierenden Systemen ist die Berücksichtigung kontinuierlicher Komponentenfunktionalität unerlässlich. Diese wird in einer weiteren Neuentwicklung adressiert. Durch die Einführung der kontinuierlichen Überlebensfunktion und dem Konzept der Diagonal Approximated Signature als entsprechendes Ersatzmodell kann das bestehende Resilienzrahmenwerk sinnvoll erweitert werden, ohne seine grundlegenden Vorteile zu beeinträchtigen. Im Kontext der Regeneration komplexer Investitionsgüter wird ein umfassendes Analyserahmenwerk vorgestellt, um die Übertragbarkeit und Anwendbarkeit aller entwickelten Methoden auf komplexe Systeme jeglicher Art zu demonstrieren. Das Rahmenwerk integriert die zuvor entwickelten Methoden der Resilienz-, Zuverlässigkeits- und Unsicherheitsanalyse. Es bietet Entscheidungsträgern die Basis für die Identifikation resilienter Regenerationspfade in zweierlei Hinsicht: Zum einen im Sinne von Regenerationspfaden mit inhärenter Resilienz und zum anderen Regenerationspfade, die zu einer maximalen Systemresilienz unter Berücksichtigung technischer und monetärer Einflussgrößen des zu analysierenden komplexen Investitionsgutes führen. Zusammenfassend bietet diese Dissertation innovative Beiträge zur effizienten Resilienzanalyse und Entscheidungsfindung für komplexe Ingenieursysteme. Sie präsentiert universell anwendbare Methoden und Rahmenwerke, die flexibel genug sind, um beliebige Systemtypen und Leistungsmaße zu berücksichtigen. Dies wird in zahlreichen Fallstudien von willkürlichen Flussnetzwerken, funktionalen Modellen von Axialkompressoren bis hin zu substrukturierten Infrastruktursystemen mit mehreren tausend Einzelkomponenten demonstriert

    Artificial Intelligence and International Conflict in Cyberspace

    This edited volume explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming international conflict in cyberspace. Over the past three decades, cyberspace developed into a crucial frontier and issue of international conflict. However, scholarly work on the relationship between AI and conflict in cyberspace has been produced along somewhat rigid disciplinary boundaries and an even more rigid sociotechnical divide – wherein technical and social scholarship are seldomly brought into a conversation. This is the first volume to address these themes through a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary approach. With the intent of exploring the question ‘what is at stake with the use of automation in international conflict in cyberspace through AI?’, the chapters in the volume focus on three broad themes, namely: (1) technical and operational, (2) strategic and geopolitical and (3) normative and legal. These also constitute the three parts in which the chapters of this volume are organised, although these thematic sections should not be considered as an analytical or a disciplinary demarcation

    Spatiotemporal Event Graphs for Dynamic Scene Understanding

    Dynamic scene understanding is the ability of a computer system to interpret and make sense of the visual information present in a video of a real-world scene. In this thesis, we present a series of frameworks for dynamic scene understanding starting from road event detection from an autonomous driving perspective to complex video activity detection, followed by continual learning approaches for the life-long learning of the models. Firstly, we introduce the ROad event Awareness Dataset (ROAD) for Autonomous Driving, to our knowledge the first of its kind. ROAD is designed to test an autonomous vehicle’s ability to detect road events, defined as triplets composed by an active agent, the action(s) it performs and the corresponding scene locations. Due to the lack of datasets equipped with formally specified logical requirements, we also introduce the ROad event Awareness Dataset with logical Requirements (ROAD-R), the first publicly available dataset for autonomous driving with requirements expressed as logical constraints, as a tool for driving neurosymbolic research in the area. Next, we extend event detection to holistic scene understanding by proposing two complex activity detection methods. In the first method, we present a deformable, spatiotemporal scene graph approach, consisting of three main building blocks: action tube detection, a 3D deformable RoI pooling layer designed for learning the flexible, deformable geometry of the constituent action tubes, and a scene graph constructed by considering all parts as nodes and connecting them based on different semantics. In a second approach evolving from the first, we propose a hybrid graph neural network that combines attention applied to a graph encoding of the local (short-term) dynamic scene with a temporal graph modelling the overall long-duration activity. Our contribution is threefold: i) a feature extraction technique; ii) a method for constructing a local scene graph followed by graph attention, and iii) a graph for temporally connecting all the local dynamic scene graphs. Finally, the last part of the thesis is about presenting a new continual semi-supervised learning (CSSL) paradigm, proposed to the attention of the machine learning community.     Monitoring Additive Manufacturing Machine Health

    Additive manufacturing (AM) allows the production of parts and goods with many benefits over more conventional manufacturing methods. AM permits more geometrically complex designs, custom and low-volume production runs, and the flexibility to produce a wide variety of parts on a single machine with reduced pre-production cost and time requirements. However, it can be difficult to determine the condition, or health, of an AM machine since complex designs can increase the variability of part quality. With fewer parts produced, destructive testing is less desirable and statistical methods of tracking part quality may be less informative. Combined with the relatively more complex nature of AM machines, qualifying AM machines and monitoring their health to perform maintenance or repairs is a challenging task. We first present a case study that demonstrates the difficulty of monitoring the qualification of an AM machine. We then discuss some unique challenges AM presents when calibrating and taking measurements of laser power, and we demonstrate the relative insufficiency of this method in tracking the qualification status of an AM machine and the quality of the parts produced. Next, we present a framework that reverses the directionality of monitoring AM machine health. Rather than monitoring machine subsystems and intermediate metrics reflective of part quality, we instead directly monitor part quality through a combination of witness builds and witness parts that provide observational data to define the health status of a machine. Witness builds provide more accurate data separated from the noisy influence of parts and parameter settings, while witness artifacts provide more timely data but with less accuracy. Finally, machine health is modeled as a partially observed Markov decision process using the witness parts framework to maximize the long-term expected value per build. We show the superiority of this model by comparison to two less complex models, one that uses no use no witness parts and another that uses only witness builds. A case study shows the benefits of implementing the model, and a sensitivity analysis is performed to show relevant insights and considerations

    Complexity Science in Human Change

    This reprint encompasses fourteen contributions that offer avenues towards a better understanding of complex systems in human behavior. The phenomena studied here are generally pattern formation processes that originate in social interaction and psychotherapy. Several accounts are also given of the coordination in body movements and in physiological, neuronal and linguistic processes. A common denominator of such pattern formation is that complexity and entropy of the respective systems become reduced spontaneously, which is the hallmark of self-organization. The various methodological approaches of how to model such processes are presented in some detail. Results from the various methods are systematically compared and discussed. Among these approaches are algorithms for the quantification of synchrony by cross-correlational statistics, surrogate control procedures, recurrence mapping and network models.This volume offers an informative and sophisticated resource for scholars of human change, and as well for students at advanced levels, from graduate to post-doctoral.
