    Human Motion Trajectory Prediction: A Survey

    With growing numbers of intelligent autonomous systems in human environments, the ability of such systems to perceive, understand and anticipate human behavior becomes increasingly important. Specifically, predicting future positions of dynamic agents and planning considering such predictions are key tasks for self-driving vehicles, service robots and advanced surveillance systems. This paper provides a survey of human motion trajectory prediction. We review, analyze and structure a large selection of work from different communities and propose a taxonomy that categorizes existing methods based on the motion modeling approach and level of contextual information used. We provide an overview of the existing datasets and performance metrics.     Explainable shared control in assistive robotics

    Shared control plays a pivotal role in designing assistive robots to complement human capabilities during everyday tasks. However, traditional shared control relies on users forming an accurate mental model of expected robot behaviour. Without this accurate mental image, users may encounter confusion or frustration whenever their actions do not elicit the intended system response, forming a misalignment between the respective internal models of the robot and human. The Explainable Shared Control paradigm introduced in this thesis attempts to resolve such model misalignment by jointly considering assistance and transparency. There are two perspectives of transparency to Explainable Shared Control: the human's and the robot's. Augmented reality is presented as an integral component that addresses the human viewpoint by visually unveiling the robot's internal mechanisms. Whilst the robot perspective requires an awareness of human "intent", and so a clustering framework composed of a deep generative model is developed for human intention inference. Both transparency constructs are implemented atop a real assistive robotic wheelchair and tested with human users. An augmented reality headset is incorporated into the robotic wheelchair and different interface options are evaluated across two user studies to explore their influence on mental model accuracy. Experimental results indicate that this setup facilitates transparent assistance by improving recovery times from adverse events associated with model misalignment. As for human intention inference, the clustering framework is applied to a dataset collected from users operating the robotic wheelchair. Findings from this experiment demonstrate that the learnt clusters are interpretable and meaningful representations of human intent. This thesis serves as a first step in the interdisciplinary area of Explainable Shared Control. The contributions to shared control, augmented reality and representation learning contained within this thesis are likely to help future research advance the proposed paradigm, and thus bolster the prevalence of assistive robots.Open Acces

    Spatial Data Quality in the IoT Era:Management and Exploitation

    Within the rapidly expanding Internet of Things (IoT), growing amounts of spatially referenced data are being generated. Due to the dynamic, decentralized, and heterogeneous nature of the IoT, spatial IoT data (SID) quality has attracted considerable attention in academia and industry. How to invent and use technologies for managing spatial data quality and exploiting low-quality spatial data are key challenges in the IoT. In this tutorial, we highlight the SID consumption requirements in applications and offer an overview of spatial data quality in the IoT setting. In addition, we review pertinent technologies for quality management and low-quality data exploitation, and we identify trends and future directions for quality-aware SID management and utilization. The tutorial aims to not only help researchers and practitioners to better comprehend SID quality challenges and solutions, but also offer insights that may enable innovative research and applications

    Privacy and security in cyber-physical systems

    Data privacy has attracted increasing attention in the past decade due to the emerging technologies that require our data to provide utility. Service providers (SPs) encourage users to share their personal data in return for a better user experience. However, users' raw data usually contains implicit sensitive information that can be inferred by a third party. This raises great concern about users' privacy. In this dissertation, we develop novel techniques to achieve a better privacy-utility trade-off (PUT) in various applications. We first consider smart meter (SM) privacy and employ physical resources to minimize the information leakage to the SP through SM readings. We measure privacy using information-theoretic metrics and find private data release policies (PDRPs) by formulating the problem as a Markov decision process (MDP). We also propose noise injection techniques for time-series data privacy. We characterize optimal PDRPs measuring privacy via mutual information (MI) and utility loss via added distortion. Reformulating the problem as an MDP, we solve it using deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for real location trace data. We also consider a scenario for hiding an underlying ``sensitive'' variable and revealing a ``useful'' variable for utility by periodically selecting from among sensors to share the measurements with an SP. We formulate this as an optimal stopping problem and solve using DRL. We then consider privacy-aware communication over a wiretap channel. We maximize the information delivered to the legitimate receiver, while minimizing the information leakage from the sensitive attribute to the eavesdropper. We propose using a variational-autoencoder (VAE) and validate our approach with colored and annotated MNIST dataset. Finally, we consider defenses against active adversaries in the context of security-critical applications. We propose an adversarial example (AE) generation method exploiting the data distribution. We perform adversarial training using the proposed AEs and evaluate the performance against real-world adversarial attacks.Open Acces

    Movement Analytics: Current Status, Application to Manufacturing, and Future Prospects from an AI Perspective

    Data-driven decision making is becoming an integral part of manufacturing companies. Data is collected and commonly used to improve efficiency and produce high quality items for the customers. IoT-based and other forms of object tracking are an emerging tool for collecting movement data of objects/entities (e.g. human workers, moving vehicles, trolleys etc.) over space and time. Movement data can provide valuable insights like process bottlenecks, resource utilization, effective working time etc. that can be used for decision making and improving efficiency. Turning movement data into valuable information for industrial management and decision making requires analysis methods. We refer to this process as movement analytics. The purpose of this document is to review the current state of work for movement analytics both in manufacturing and more broadly. We survey relevant work from both a theoretical perspective and an application perspective. From the theoretical perspective, we put an emphasis on useful methods from two research areas: machine learning, and logic-based knowledge representation. We also review their combinations in view of movement analytics, and we discuss promising areas for future development and application. Furthermore, we touch on constraint optimization. From an application perspective, we review applications of these methods to movement analytics in a general sense and across various industries. We also describe currently available commercial off-the-shelf products for tracking in manufacturing, and we overview main concepts of digital twins and their applications
