    A Comprehensive Survey of the Tactile Internet: State of the art and Research Directions

    The Internet has made several giant leaps over the years, from a fixed to a mobile Internet, then to the Internet of Things, and now to a Tactile Internet. The Tactile Internet goes far beyond data, audio and video delivery over fixed and mobile networks, and even beyond allowing communication and collaboration among things. It is expected to enable haptic communication and allow skill set delivery over networks. Some examples of potential applications are tele-surgery, vehicle fleets, augmented reality and industrial process automation. Several papers already cover many of the Tactile Internet-related concepts and technologies, such as haptic codecs, applications, and supporting technologies. However, none of them offers a comprehensive survey of the Tactile Internet, including its architectures and algorithms. Furthermore, none of them provides a systematic and critical review of the existing solutions. To address these lacunae, we provide a comprehensive survey of the architectures and algorithms proposed to date for the Tactile Internet. In addition, we critically review them using a well-defined set of requirements and discuss some of the lessons learned as well as the most promising research directions

    A survey of multi-access edge computing in 5G and beyond : fundamentals, technology integration, and state-of-the-art

    Driven by the emergence of new compute-intensive applications and the vision of the Internet of Things (IoT), it is foreseen that the emerging 5G network will face an unprecedented increase in traffic volume and computation demands. However, end users mostly have limited storage capacities and finite processing capabilities, thus how to run compute-intensive applications on resource-constrained users has recently become a natural concern. Mobile edge computing (MEC), a key technology in the emerging fifth generation (5G) network, can optimize mobile resources by hosting compute-intensive applications, process large data before sending to the cloud, provide the cloud-computing capabilities within the radio access network (RAN) in close proximity to mobile users, and offer context-aware services with the help of RAN information. Therefore, MEC enables a wide variety of applications, where the real-time response is strictly required, e.g., driverless vehicles, augmented reality, robotics, and immerse media. Indeed, the paradigm shift from 4G to 5G could become a reality with the advent of new technological concepts. The successful realization of MEC in the 5G network is still in its infancy and demands for constant efforts from both academic and industry communities. In this survey, we first provide a holistic overview of MEC technology and its potential use cases and applications. Then, we outline up-to-date researches on the integration of MEC with the new technologies that will be deployed in 5G and beyond. We also summarize testbeds and experimental evaluations, and open source activities, for edge computing. We further summarize lessons learned from state-of-the-art research works as well as discuss challenges and potential future directions for MEC research

    Optimizing energy efficiency for supporting near-cloud access region of UAV based NOMA networks in IoT systems

    Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) are two promising technologies for wireless the fifth generation (5G) networks and beyond. On one hand, UAVs can be deployed as flying base stations to build line-of-sight (LoS) communication links to two ground users (GUs) and to improve the performance of conventional terrestrial cellular networks. On the other hand, NOMA enables the share of an orthogonal resource to multiple users simultaneously, thus improving the spectral efficiency and supporting massive connectivities. This paper presents two protocols namely cloud-base central station (CCS) based power-splitting protocol (PSR) and time-switching protocol (TSR), for simultaneously wireless information and power transmission (SWIPT) at UAV employed in power domain NOMA based multi-tier heterogeneous cloud radio access network (H-CRAN) of internet of things (IoT) system. The system model with k types of UAVs and two users in which the CCS manages the entire H-CRAN and operates as a central unit in the cloud is proposed in our work. Closed-form expressions of throughput and energy efficiency (EE) for UAVs are derived. In particular, the EE is determined for the impacts of power allocation at CCS, various UAV types and channel environment. The simulation results show that the performance for CCS-based PSR outperforms that for CCS-based TSR for the impacts of power allocation at the CCS. On contrary, the TSR protocol has a higher EE than the PSR in cases of the impact of various UAV types and channel environment. The analytic results match Monte Carlo simulations

    Content-Sensing Based Resource Allocation for Delay-Sensitive VR Video Uploading in 5G H-CRAN

    Virtual reality (VR) is emerging as one of key applications in future fifth-generation (5G) networks. Uploading VR video in 5G network is expected to boom in near future, as general consumers could generate high-quality VR videos with portable 360-degree cameras and are willing to share with others. Heterogeneous networks integrating with 5G cloud-radio access networks (H-CRAN) provides high transmission rate for VR video uploading. To address the motion characteristic of UE (User Equipments) and small cell feature of 5G H-CRAN, in this paper we proposed a content-sensing based resource allocation scheme for delay-sensitive VR video uploading in 5G H-CRAN, in which the source coding rate of uploading VR video is determined by the centralized RA scheduling. This scheme jointly optimizes g-NB group resource allocation, RHH/g-NB association, sub-channel assignment, power allocation, and tile encoding rate assignment as formulated in a mixed-integer nonlinear problem (MINLP). To solve the problem, a three stage algorithm is proposed. Dynamic g-NB group resource allocation is first performed according to the UE density of each group. Then, joint RRH/g-NB association, sub-channel allocation and power allocation is performed by an iterative process. Finally, encoding tile rate is assigned to optimize the target objective by adopting convex optimization toolbox. The simulation results show that our proposed algorithm ensures the total utility of system under the constraint of maximum transmission delay and power, which also with low complexity and faster convergence

    Addressing training data sparsity and interpretability challenges in AI based cellular networks

    To meet the diverse and stringent communication requirements for emerging networks use cases, zero-touch arti cial intelligence (AI) based deep automation in cellular networks is envisioned. However, the full potential of AI in cellular networks remains hindered by two key challenges: (i) training data is not as freely available in cellular networks as in other fields where AI has made a profound impact and (ii) current AI models tend to have black box behavior making operators reluctant to entrust the operation of multibillion mission critical networks to a black box AI engine, which allow little insights and discovery of relationships between the configuration and optimization parameters and key performance indicators. This dissertation systematically addresses and proposes solutions to these two key problems faced by emerging networks. A framework towards addressing the training data sparsity challenge in cellular networks is developed, that can assist network operators and researchers in choosing the optimal data enrichment technique for different network scenarios, based on the available information. The framework encompasses classical interpolation techniques, like inverse distance weighted and kriging to more advanced ML-based methods, like transfer learning and generative adversarial networks, several new techniques, such as matrix completion theory and leveraging different types of network geometries, and simulators and testbeds, among others. The proposed framework will lead to more accurate ML models, that rely on sufficient amount of representative training data. Moreover, solutions are proposed to address the data sparsity challenge specifically in Minimization of drive test (MDT) based automation approaches. MDT allows coverage to be estimated at the base station by exploiting measurement reports gathered by the user equipment without the need for drive tests. Thus, MDT is a key enabling feature for data and artificial intelligence driven autonomous operation and optimization in current and emerging cellular networks. However, to date, the utility of MDT feature remains thwarted by issues such as sparsity of user reports and user positioning inaccuracy. For the first time, this dissertation reveals the existence of an optimal bin width for coverage estimation in the presence of inaccurate user positioning, scarcity of user reports and quantization error. The presented framework can enable network operators to configure the bin size for given positioning accuracy and user density that results in the most accurate MDT based coverage estimation. The lack of interpretability in AI-enabled networks is addressed by proposing a first of its kind novel neural network architecture leveraging analytical modeling, domain knowledge, big data and machine learning to turn black box machine learning models into more interpretable models. The proposed approach combines analytical modeling and domain knowledge to custom design machine learning models with the aim of moving towards interpretable machine learning models, that not only require a lesser training time, but can also deal with issues such as sparsity of training data and determination of model hyperparameters. The approach is tested using both simulated data and real data and results show that the proposed approach outperforms existing mathematical models, while also remaining interpretable when compared with black-box ML models. Thus, the proposed approach can be used to derive better mathematical models of complex systems. The findings from this dissertation can help solve the challenges in emerging AI-based cellular networks and thus aid in their design, operation and optimization

    The 5G era of mobile networks: a comprehensive study of the related technologies accompanied by an experimentation framework

    Οι συνεχώς αυξανόμενες απαιτήσεις από τα δίκτυα κινητών επικοινωνιών για τη παροχή καλύτερων υπηρεσιών και τη διασύνδεση όλων και περισσότερων συσκευών, ωθούν τη κοινότητα του κλάδου στην ανάπτυξη νέων μεθόδων και τεχνολογιών οργάνωσης των δικτύων προκειμένου να αντιμετωπιστεί αποτελεσματικά αυτή η πρόκληση. Δεδομένου ότι η παρούσα τεχνολογία έχει φτάσει στα όρια της από άποψη ικανότητας διαχείρισης της κίνησης, απαιτείται η ανάπτυξη ενός νέου πλαισίου λειτουργίας το οποίο θα μπορεί να ανταποκριθεί αποτελεσματικά στις νέες συνθήκες που διαμορφώνονται από τη τηλεπικοινωνιακή αγορά. Η 5 η γενιά των δικτύων κινητών επικοινωνιών (5G) αποσκοπεί στην επίλυση ακριβώς αυτού του ζητήματος, μέσα από την ανάπτυξη ενός νέου μοντέλου λειτουργίας. Το μοντέλο αυτό αναδιαρθρώνοντας εκ βάθρων τον τρόπο λειτουργίας του δικτύου σε όλα τα επίπεδα, σχηματίζει ένα νέο οικοσύστημα δικτυακών υποδομών και λειτουργιών το οποίο επιτρέπει τη παροχή στους χρήστες υπηρεσιών υψηλού επιπέδου, προσαρμοσμένες στις εκάστοτε ανάγκες τους. Στα πλαίσια της παρούσας εργασίας μελετήθηκαν εκτενώς οι θεμελιώδεις αρχές και οι κυριότερες τεχνολογίες που διέπουν τη λειτουργία ενός δικτύου νέας γενιάς καθ’ όλο το μήκος του. Ξεκινώντας από τις καινοτομίες που αφορούν τη δομή των 5G δικτύων σε επίπεδο αρχιτεκτονικής, η ανάλυση επεκτείνεται με μία προσέγγιση από κάτω προς τα πάνω· στα επίπεδα εκπομπής και πρόσβασης στο δίκτυο (C-RAN & MAC), στους μηχανισμούς που είναι υπεύθυνοι για παροχή των λειτουργιών και υπηρεσιών του δικτύου (NFV), ενώ εν συνεχεία γίνεται αναφορά στο νέο μοντέλο δρομολόγησης και διαχείρισης της κίνησης συνολικά στο δίκτυο (SDN) και σε επόμενο στάδιο παρουσιάζεται η τεχνολογία που αφορά την ικανότητα παροχής διακριτών υπηρεσιών στους χρήστες (E2E Slicing). Ακόμα, παρουσιάζονται ορισμένοι χαρακτηριστικοί δείκτες και μετρικές που σχετίζονται με τη προτυποποίηση των τεχνολογιών του δικτύου καθώς και όλες οι τρέχουσες εξελίξεις που αφορούν την ανάπτυξη του 5G στην Ευρώπη. Στη συνέχεια παρουσιάζονται τα δεδομένα του πειράματος που διεξήχθη για τους σκοπούς της εργασίας και αφορά αφενός τη μοντελοποίηση ενός υφιστάμενου δικτύου με βάση τα νέα πρότυπα του 5G και αφετέρου την αξιολόγηση της απόδοσης του με βάση ορισμένα σενάρια σχετικά με τη τοπολογία και το πλήθος των δεδομένων που ανταλλάσσονται κάθε στιγμή στο δίκτυο. Η εξέταση των παραμέτρων αποδοτικότητας εστιάζει στην ικανότητα του ONOS SDN Controller να διαχειρίζεται τη κίνηση των δεδομένων όταν προκύπτουν ορισμένα συμβάντα που επηρεάζουν την αρχική δομή του δικτύου. Ως προς τα αποτελέσματα των μετρήσεων που διεξάγονται, παρόλο που φαίνεται το θετικό αντίκτυπο που θα έχει η ενσωμάτωση των νέων τεχνολογιών στην απόδοση των δικτύων κινητών επικοινωνιών, υπάρχουν ακόμα ορισμένα επιμέρους ανοικτά ζητήματα τα οποία χρήζουν περαιτέρω έρευνας από τη πλευρά των μελών της τηλεπικοινωνιακής κοινότητας ώστε να μην υποσκαφθεί τελικά το αρχικό όραμα της καθολικής λειτουργίας όλων των κινητών συσκευών υπό μία ενιαία ομπρέλα.The ever-increasing demand from mobile communications networks for the provision of better services and interconnection of more devices is pushing the industry's community to develop new network organization methods and technologies in order to effectively address this challenge. As the current technology has reached its limits in terms of traffic management capability, it is necessary to develop a new operating framework that can effectively respond to the new conditions created by the telecommunications market. The 5th generation of mobile communication networks (5G) aims to solve this exact issue by developing a new operating model. This model, by thoroughly restructuring the way the network operates at all levels, forms a new ecosystem of network infrastructures and functions that enables the provision of high-level services to users, tailored to their particular needs. The fundamental principles and key technologies that govern the operation of a new generation network throughout its entire length were extensively studied in the context of this paper. Starting with the innovations regarding the structure of 5G networks at the architectural level, the analysis extends to a bottom-up approach: from the broadcast and access levels to the network (C-RAN & MAC) to the mechanisms responsible for delivering the network's functions and services (NFV). Then, the new network-based routing and traffic management (SDN) model is introduced, and the technology for providing distinctive services to users (E2E Slicing) is presented. Furthermore, some characteristic indicators and metrics related to the standardization of the network's technologies are presented, as well as all the current developments related to the development of 5G in Europe. Then, the data of the experiment carried out for the purposes of the paper is presented. On the one hand, this data concerns the modeling of an existing network based on the new 5G standards and, on the other hand, the evaluation of its performance based on some scenarios regarding the topology and the amount of data exchanged at any time on the network. The examination of the efficiency parameters focuses on the ability of the ONOS SDN controller to manage the traffic of the data when certain events affecting the original network structure occur. In terms of the results of the measurements being carried out, although the positive impact of the incorporation of new technologies on the performance of mobile communications networks appears to be positive, there are still some individual open issues that need further research by members of the telecommunications community in order for the original vision of the universal operation of all mobile devices under one single umbrella not to be ultimately undermined
