    Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Guidance, Navigation, and Control

    A considerable volume of research has recently blossomed in the literature on autonomous underwater vehicles accepting recent developments in mathematical modeling and system identification; pitch control; information filtering and active sensing, including inductive sensors of ELF emissions and also optical sensor arrays for position, velocity, and orientation detection; grid navigation algorithms; and dynamic obstacle avoidance among others. In light of these modern developments, this article develops and compares integrative guidance, navigation, and control methodologies for the Naval Postgraduate School’s Phoenix, a submerged autonomous vehicle. The measure of merit reveals how well each of several methodologies cope with known and unknown disturbance currents that can be constant or harmonic while maintaining safe passage distance from underwater obstacles, in this case submerged mines

    Merged with duplicate record 10026.1/856 on 07.03.2017 by CS (TIS)A cooperative project between the Universities of Plymouth and Cranfield was aimed at designing and developing an autonomous underwater vehicle named Hammerhead. The work presented herein is to formulate an advance guidance and control system and to implement it in the Hammerhead. This involves the description of Hammerhead hardware from a control system perspective. In addition to the control system, an intelligent navigation scheme and a state of the art vision system is also developed. However, the development of these submodules is out of the scope of this thesis. To model an underwater vehicle, the traditional way is to acquire painstaking mathematical models based on laws of physics and then simplify and linearise the models to some operating point. One of the principal novelties of this research is the use of system identification techniques on actual vehicle data obtained from full scale in water experiments. Two new guidance mechanisms have also been formulated for cruising type vehicles. The first is a modification of the proportional navigation guidance for missiles whilst the other is a hybrid law which is a combination of several guidance strategies employed during different phases of the Right. In addition to the modelling process and guidance systems, a number of robust control methodologies have been conceived for Hammerhead. A discrete time linear quadratic Gaussian with loop transfer recovery based autopilot is formulated and integrated with the conventional and more advance guidance laws proposed. A model predictive controller (MPC) has also been devised which is constructed using artificial intelligence techniques such as genetic algorithms (GA) and fuzzy logic. A GA is employed as an online optimization routine whilst fuzzy logic has been exploited as an objective function in an MPC framework. The GA-MPC autopilot has been implemented in Hammerhead in real time and results demonstrate excellent robustness despite the presence of disturbances and ever present modelling uncertainty. To the author's knowledge, this is the first successful application of a GA in real time optimization for controller tuning in the marine sector and thus the thesis makes an extremely novel and useful contribution to control system design in general. The controllers are also integrated with the proposed guidance laws and is also considered to be an invaluable contribution to knowledge.     Distributed Neurodynamics-Based Backstepping Optimal Control for Robust Constrained Consensus of Underactuated Underwater Vehicles Fleet

    Robust constrained formation tracking control of underactuated underwater vehicles (UUVs) fleet in three-dimensional space is a challenging but practical problem. To address this problem, this paper develops a novel consensus based optimal coordination protocol and a robust controller, which adopts a hierarchical architecture. On the top layer, the spherical coordinate transform is introduced to tackle the nonholonomic constraint, and then a distributed optimal motion coordination strategy is developed. As a result, the optimal formation tracking of UUVs fleet can be achieved, and the constraints are fulfilled. To realize the generated optimal commands better and, meanwhile, deal with the underactuation, at the lower-level control loop a neurodynamics based robust backstepping controller is designed, and in particular, the issue of "explosion of terms" appearing in conventional backstepping based controllers is avoided and control activities are improved. The stability of the overall UUVs formation system is established to ensure that all the states of the UUVs are uniformly ultimately bounded in the presence of unknown disturbances.     Marine Vehicle Sensor Network Architecture and Protocol Designs for Ocean Observation

    The micro-scale and meso-scale ocean dynamic processes which are nonlinear and have large variability, have a significant impact on the fisheries, natural resources, and marine climatology. A rapid, refined and sophisticated observation system is therefore needed in marine scientific research. The maneuverability and controllability of mobile sensor platforms make them a preferred choice to establish ocean observing networks, compared to the static sensor observing platform. In this study, marine vehicles are utilized as the nodes of mobile sensor networks for coverage sampling of a regional ocean area and ocean feature tracking. A synoptic analysis about marine vehicle dynamic control, multi vehicles mission assignment and path planning methods, and ocean feature tracking and observing techniques is given. Combined with the observation plan in the South China Sea, we provide an overview of the mobile sensor networks established with marine vehicles, and the corresponding simulation results

    Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are used for numerous applications in the deep sea, such as hydrographic survey, sea bed mining and oceanographic mapping, etc. Presently, significant amount of effort, is being made in developing biorobotic AUVs (BAUVs) with biologically inspired control surfaces. However, the dynamics of AUVs and BAUVs are highly nonlinear and the hydrodynamic coefficients are not precisely known. As such the development of nonlinear and adaptive control systems is of considerable importance; We consider the suboptimal dive plane control of AUVs using the state-dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) technique. This method provides effective means of designing nonlinear control systems for minimum as well as nonminimum phase AUV models. Moreover, hard control constraints are included in the design process; We also attempt to design adaptive control systems for BAUVs using biologically-inspired pectoral-like fins. The fins are assumed to be oscillating harmonically with a combined linear (sway) and angular (yaw) motion. The bias (mean) angle of the angular motion of the fin is used as a control input. Using discrete-time state variable representation of the BAUV, adaptive sampled-data control systems for the trajectory control are derived using state feedback as well as output feedback. We develop direct as well as indirect adaptive control systems for BAUVs. The advantage of the indirect adaptive law lies in its applicability to minimum as well as nonminimum phase systems. Simulation results are presented to evaluate the performance of each control system
