Performance of Waterfilling-based Schemes for Interference Cancellation in 4G Networks
The proceeding at: 3rd International Workshop on Cognitive Information Processing (CIP 2012), took place 2012, May 28-30, in Baiona, España. The event Web site at http://cip2012.tsc.uc3m.es/In this work we consider the optimization of the power assigned to the user streams in a coordinated base station downlink environment with Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (OFDM). In this scenario the base stations perform distributed cooperative processing with a block diagonalization scheme to remove interference among users. Two schemes based on the waterfilling technique are proposed and compared to the optimal solution, which can be obtained numerically, by using convex optimization. We show that the proposed schemes achieve a performance, in terms of weighted sum rate, very close to the optimal, without the heavy computational complexity required by the numerical solution. These sum rates are compared in a simplified scenario consisting of two-user and two-cell. Other more realistic multicell scenario and some examples of achievable rates are presented too.The research leading to these results has received funding from the Spanish Government under coordinated projects TEC2008-06327-C03-01/02/03 (MULTI-ADAPTIVE) and TEC2011-29006-C03-01/02/03 (GRE3N) and from EU FP7 project INFSO-ICT-247223 ARTIST 4G.Publicad
Game theoretic aspects of distributed spectral coordination with application to DSL networks
In this paper we use game theoretic techniques to study the value of
cooperation in distributed spectrum management problems. We show that the
celebrated iterative water-filling algorithm is subject to the prisoner's
dilemma and therefore can lead to severe degradation of the achievable rate
region in an interference channel environment. We also provide thorough
analysis of a simple two bands near-far situation where we are able to provide
closed form tight bounds on the rate region of both fixed margin iterative
water filling (FM-IWF) and dynamic frequency division multiplexing (DFDM)
methods. This is the only case where such analytic expressions are known and
all previous studies included only simulated results of the rate region. We
then propose an alternative algorithm that alleviates some of the drawbacks of
the IWF algorithm in near-far scenarios relevant to DSL access networks. We
also provide experimental analysis based on measured DSL channels of both
algorithms as well as the centralized optimum spectrum management
Energy-Efficient Scheduling and Power Allocation in Downlink OFDMA Networks with Base Station Coordination
This paper addresses the problem of energy-efficient resource allocation in
the downlink of a cellular OFDMA system. Three definitions of the energy
efficiency are considered for system design, accounting for both the radiated
and the circuit power. User scheduling and power allocation are optimized
across a cluster of coordinated base stations with a constraint on the maximum
transmit power (either per subcarrier or per base station). The asymptotic
noise-limited regime is discussed as a special case. %The performance of both
an isolated and a non-isolated cluster of coordinated base stations is examined
in the numerical experiments. Results show that the maximization of the energy
efficiency is approximately equivalent to the maximization of the spectral
efficiency for small values of the maximum transmit power, while there is a
wide range of values of the maximum transmit power for which a moderate
reduction of the data rate provides a large saving in terms of dissipated
energy. Also, the performance gap among the considered resource allocation
strategies reduces as the out-of-cluster interference increases.Comment: to appear on IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
Cooperative Multi-Cell Networks: Impact of Limited-Capacity Backhaul and Inter-Users Links
Cooperative technology is expected to have a great impact on the performance
of cellular or, more generally, infrastructure networks. Both multicell
processing (cooperation among base stations) and relaying (cooperation at the
user level) are currently being investigated. In this presentation, recent
results regarding the performance of multicell processing and user cooperation
under the assumption of limited-capacity interbase station and inter-user
links, respectively, are reviewed. The survey focuses on related results
derived for non-fading uplink and downlink channels of simple cellular system
models. The analytical treatment, facilitated by these simple setups, enhances
the insight into the limitations imposed by limited-capacity constraints on the
gains achievable by cooperative techniques
Resource allocation for OFDMA systems with multi-cell joint transmission
This paper considers the downlink resource allocation of a coordinated multi-cell cluster in OFDMA systems with universal frequency reuse. Multi-cell joint transmission is considered via zero-forcing precoding. Furthermore, joint optimization of the user selection and power allocation across multiple subchannels and multiple cells is studied. The objective is to maximize the weighted sum rate under per-base-station power constraints. Based on general duality theory, two iterative resource allocation algorithms are proposed and compared with the optimal solution, which requires an exhaustive search of all possible combinations of users over all subchannels. Simulation results show that the two proposed algorithms achieve a performance very close to the optimal, with much lower computational complexity. In addition, we show that joint user set selection across multiple subchannels significantly improves the system performance in terms of the weighted sum rate
Constrained power allocation schemes for coordinated base station transmission using block diagonalization
In this study, we propose several power allocation schemes in a coordinated base station downlink transmission
with per antenna and per base station power constraints. Block Diagonalization is employed to remove
interference among users. For each set of power constraints, two schemes based on the waterfilling distribution
are proposed and compared to the optimal solution, which can only be obtained numerically by using convex
optimization. We show that the proposed schemes achieve a performance, in terms of weighted sum rate, very
close to the optimal, without the heavy computational complexity required by the latter. The sum rates are
compared first in a simplified two-user two-cell case where we also compare our approach to the previous
solutions available in the literature. Then, we examine the performance in a multi-cell scenario where we also
evaluate the degradation of the performance caused by imperfect channel state informationThis study has been partly funded by projects TEC2008-06327-C03-02,
