Usability testing of our libraryâs new website
Since the University of Zurich required all departments to use the same content management system, a makeoverof our Main Libraryâs website was planned for 2017. Following Steve Krugâs book Donât make me think, revisited,we reduced the contents and tried to build an easy to understand and straightforward navigation for the users. Toverify our concept, we arranged âdo-it-yourselfâ usability tests. Three test sessions with three persons each weresufficient to find out what had to be improved on the website, and were more helpful than hours of discussionamong the team. Usability testing helped us to understand our customers' search behaviour and expectations fornavigation. It was also entertaining and a novel way of interacting with our customers
Mediating between AI and highly specialized users
We report part of the design experience gained in X-Media, a system for knowledge management and sharing. Consolidated techniques of interaction design (scenario-based design) had to be revisited to capture the richness and complexity of intelligent interactive systems. We show that the design of intelligent systems requires methodologies (faceted scenarios) that support the investigation of intelligent features and usability factors simultaneously. Interaction designers become mediators between intelligent technology and users, and have to facilitate reciprocal understanding
Revisitation Patterns and Disorientation
The non-linear structure of web sites may cause users to become disorientated. In this paper we describe the results of a pilot study to find measures of user revisitation patterns that help in predicting disorientation
Revisiting revisitation in computer interaction: organic bookmark management.
According to Milic-Frayling et al. (2004), there are two general ways of user browsing i.e. search (finding a website where the user has never visited before) and revisitation (returning to a website where the user has visited in the past). The issue of search is relevant to search engine technology, whilst revisitation concerns web usage and browser history mechanisms. The support for revisitation is normally through a set of functional built-in icons e.g. History, Back, Forward and Bookmarks. Nevertheless, for returning web users, they normally find it is easier and faster to re-launch an online search again, rather than spending time to find a particular web site from their personal bookmark and history records. Tauscher and Greenberg (1997) showed that revisiting web pages forms up to 58% of the recurrence rate of web browsing. Cockburn and McKenzie (2001) also stated that 81% of web pages have been previously visited by the user. According to Obendorf et al. (2007), revisitation can be divided into four classifications based on time: short-term (72.6% revisits within an hour), medium-term (12% revisits within a day and 7.8% revisits within a week), and long-term (7.6% revisits longer than a week)
An improved negative selection algorithm based on the hybridization of cuckoo search and differential evolution for anomaly detection
The biological immune system (BIS) is characterized by networks of cells, tissues, and
organs communicating and working in synchronization. It also has the ability to learn,
recognize, and remember, thus providing the solid foundation for the development
of Artificial Immune System (AIS). Since the emergence of AIS, it has proved itself
as an area of computational intelligence. Real-Valued Negative Selection Algorithm
with Variable-Sized Detectors (V-Detectors) is an offspring of AIS and demonstrated
its potentials in the field of anomaly detection. The V-Detectors algorithm depends
greatly on the random detectors generated in monitoring the status of a system.
These randomly generated detectors suffer from not been able to adequately cover
the non-self space, which diminishes the detection performance of the V-Detectors
algorithm. This research therefore proposed CSDE-V-Detectors which entail the
use of the hybridization of Cuckoo Search (CS) and Differential Evolution (DE) in
optimizing the random detectors of the V-Detectors. The DE is integrated with CS
at the population initialization by distributing the population linearly. This linear
distribution gives the population a unique, stable, and progressive distribution process.
Thus, each individual detector is characteristically different from the other detectors.
CSDE capabilities of global search, and use of L´evy flight facilitates the effectiveness
of the detector set in the search space. In comparison with V-Detectors, cuckoo search,
differential evolution, support vector machine, artificial neural network, na¨Ĺve bayes,
and k-NN, experimental results demonstrates that CSDE-V-Detectors outperforms
other algorithms with an average detection rate of 95:30% on all the datasets. This
signifies that CSDE-V-Detectors can efficiently attain highest detection rates and
lowest false alarm rates for anomaly detection. Thus, the optimization of the randomly
detectors of V-Detectors algorithm with CSDE is proficient and suitable for anomaly
detection tasks
Search Interfaces for Mathematicians
Access to mathematical knowledge has changed dramatically in recent years,
therefore changing mathematical search practices. Our aim with this study is to
scrutinize professional mathematicians' search behavior. With this
understanding we want to be able to reason why mathematicians use which tool
for what search problem in what phase of the search process. To gain these
insights we conducted 24 repertory grid interviews with mathematically inclined
people (ranging from senior professional mathematicians to non-mathematicians).
From the interview data we elicited patterns for the user group
"mathematicians" that can be applied when understanding design issues or

Closing the loop: assisting archival appraisal and information retrieval in one sweep
In this article, we examine the similarities between the concept of appraisal, a process that takes place within the archives, and the concept of relevance judgement, a process fundamental to the evaluation of information retrieval systems. More specifically, we revisit selection criteria proposed as result of archival research, and work within the digital curation communities, and, compare them to relevance criteria as discussed within information retrieval's literature based discovery. We illustrate how closely these criteria relate to each other and discuss how understanding the relationships between the these disciplines could form a basis for proposing automated selection for archival processes and initiating multi-objective learning with respect to information retrieval
Knowledge Enhanced Notes (KEN)
To aid the creation and through-life support of large complex engineering products, organisations are placing a greater emphasis on constructing complete and accurate records of design activities. Current documentary approaches are not sufficient to capture activities and decisions in their entirety and can lead to organisations revisiting and in some cases reworking design decisions in order to understand previous design episodes. This paper presents an overview of the challenges in creating accurate, re-usable records of synchronous design activities, enhancing the through-life support of engineering products, followed by the development of an information capture software system to address these challenges. The main objectives for the development of the Knowledge Enhanced Notes system are described followed by the techniques chosen to address the objectives, and finally a description of a use-case for the system. Whilst the focus of the KEN System was to aid the creation and through-life support of large complex engineering products through constructing complete and accurate records of design activities, the system is entirely generic in its application to synchronous activities

Hybrid process modelling within business process management projects
Business Process Management (BPM) is still an important research topic amongst both academics
and businesses. The recent recession has forced businesses to focus on cost control and efficiency
in order to better cope with the economic downturn. Many companies in this situation turn to BPM
software as a means of improving their efficiency and costs by reducing aspects of the business
such as process lead-times and material costs. In order to identify areas of the business and its
processes which require changing the business will most likely adopt a method of modelling their
business processes. Because of the large number of available techniques decision makers usually
struggle to decide the best approach. Recent literature has also pointed out that prevalent
modelling techniques are designed to serve one specific purpose and may not be capable of
modelling the whole picture. The key relationship between the information systems and the human
behaviour is one example of where existing techniques are biased towards opposite ends of the
scale. This paper proposes the use of a hybrid modelling notation composed of multiple existing
notations in order to bridge this. The hybrid notation was applied to a BPM project at a company
in the construction industry and a case study conducted with its users
