A Unified View of Graph Regularity via Matrix Decompositions
We prove algorithmic weak and \Szemeredi{} regularity lemmas for several
classes of sparse graphs in the literature, for which only weak regularity
lemmas were previously known. These include core-dense graphs, low threshold
rank graphs, and (a version of) upper regular graphs. More precisely, we
define \emph{cut pseudorandom graphs}, we prove our regularity lemmas for these
graphs, and then we show that cut pseudorandomness captures all of the above
graph classes as special cases.
The core of our approach is an abstracted matrix decomposition, roughly
following Frieze and Kannan [Combinatorica '99] and \Lovasz{} and Szegedy
[Geom.\ Func.\ Anal.\ '07], which can be computed by a simple algorithm by
Charikar [AAC0 '00]. This gives rise to the class of cut pseudorandom graphs,
and using work of Oveis Gharan and Trevisan [TOC '15], it also implies new
PTASes for MAX-CUT, MAX-BISECTION, MIN-BISECTION for a significantly expanded
class of input graphs. (It is NP Hard to get PTASes for these graphs in
general.
Minimum-Weight Edge Discriminator in Hypergraphs
In this paper we introduce the concept of minimum-weight edge-discriminators
in hypergraphs, and study its various properties. For a hypergraph , a function is said to be an {\it edge-discriminator} on if
, for all hyperedges , and
, for every two
distinct hyperedges . An {\it optimal
edge-discriminator} on , to be denoted by , is
an edge-discriminator on satisfying , where
the minimum is taken over all edge-discriminators on . We prove
that any hypergraph , with , satisfies ,
and equality holds if and only if the elements of are mutually
disjoint. For -uniform hypergraphs , it
follows from results on Sidon sequences that , and
the bound is attained up to a constant factor by the complete -uniform
hypergraph. Next, we construct optimal edge-discriminators for some special
hypergraphs, which include paths, cycles, and complete -partite hypergraphs.
Finally, we show that no optimal edge-discriminator on any hypergraph , with , satisfies
, which, in turn,
raises many other interesting combinatorial questions.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
Spatially Coupled LDPC Codes Constructed from Protographs
In this paper, we construct protograph-based spatially coupled low-density
parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes by coupling together a series of L disjoint, or
uncoupled, LDPC code Tanner graphs into a single coupled chain. By varying L,
we obtain a flexible family of code ensembles with varying rates and frame
lengths that can share the same encoding and decoding architecture for
arbitrary L. We demonstrate that the resulting codes combine the best features
of optimized irregular and regular codes in one design: capacity approaching
iterative belief propagation (BP) decoding thresholds and linear growth of
minimum distance with block length. In particular, we show that, for
sufficiently large L, the BP thresholds on both the binary erasure channel
(BEC) and the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGNC)
saturate to a particular value significantly better than the BP decoding
threshold and numerically indistinguishable from the optimal maximum
a-posteriori (MAP) decoding threshold of the uncoupled LDPC code. When all
variable nodes in the coupled chain have degree greater than two,
asymptotically the error probability converges at least doubly exponentially
with decoding iterations and we obtain sequences of asymptotically good LDPC
codes with fast convergence rates and BP thresholds close to the Shannon limit.
Further, the gap to capacity decreases as the density of the graph increases,
opening up a new way to construct capacity achieving codes on memoryless
binary-input symmetric-output (MBS) channels with low-complexity BP decoding.Comment: Submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Information Theor
Connectivity Influences on Nonlinear Dynamics in Weakly-Synchronized Networks: Insights from Rössler Systems, Electronic Chaotic Oscillators, Model and Biological Neurons
Natural and engineered networks, such as interconnected neurons, ecological and social networks, coupled oscillators, wireless terminals and power loads, are characterized by an appreciable heterogeneity in the local connectivity around each node. For instance, in both elementary structures such as stars and complex graphs having scale-free topology, a minority of elements are linked to the rest of the network disproportionately strongly. While the effect of the arrangement of structural connections on the emergent synchronization pattern has been studied extensively, considerably less is known about its influence on the temporal dynamics unfolding within each node. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation across diverse simulated and experimental systems, encompassing star and complex networks of Rössler systems, coupled hysteresis-based electronic oscillators, microcircuits of leaky integrate-and-fire model neurons, and finally recordings from in-vitro cultures of spontaneously-growing neuronal networks. We systematically consider a range of dynamical measures, including the correlation dimension, nonlinear prediction error, permutation entropy, and other information-theoretical indices. The empirical evidence gathered reveals that under situations of weak synchronization, wherein rather than a collective behavior one observes significantly differentiated dynamics, denser connectivity tends to locally promote the emergence of stronger signatures of nonlinear dynamics. In deterministic systems, transition to chaos and generation of higher-dimensional signals were observed; however, when the coupling is stronger, this relationship may be lost or even inverted. In systems with a strong stochastic component, the generation of more temporally-organized activity could be induced. These observations have many potential implications across diverse fields of basic and applied science, for example, in the design of distributed sensing systems based on wireless coupled oscillators, in network identification and control, as well as in the interpretation of neuroscientific and other dynamical data
Minimum-Weight Edge Discriminators in Hypergraphs
In this paper we introduce the notion of minimum-weight edge-discriminators in hypergraphs, and study their various properties. For a hypergraph H = (V , E), a function λ : V → Z+∪{0} is said to be an edge-discriminator on H if ∑v∈Eiλ(v)\u3e0, for all hyperedges Ei ∈ E and ∑v∈Eiλ(v) ≠ ∑v∈Ejλ(v), for every two distinct hyperedges Ei,Ej, ∈ E. An optimal edge-discriminator on H, to be denoted by λH, is an edge-discriminator on H satisfying ∑v∈VλH(v) = minλ ∑v∈Vλ(v), where the minimum is taken over all edge-discriminators on H. We prove that any hypergraph H = (V , E), with |E| = m, satisfies ∑v∈VλH(v) ≤ m(m+1)/2, and the equality holds if and only if the elements of E are mutually disjoint. For r-uniform hypergraphs H = (V,E), it follows from earlier results on Sidon sequences that ∑v∈VλH(v) ≤ |V|r+1+o(|V|r+1), and the bound is attained up to a constant factor by the complete r-uniform hypergraph. Finally, we show that no optimal edge-discriminator on any hypergraph H = (V,E), with |E| = m (≥3), satisfies ∑v∈VλH(v) = m(m+1)/2−1. This shows that all integer values between m and m(m+1)/2 cannot be the weight of an optimal edge-discriminator of a hypergraph, and this raises many other interesting combinatorial questions
Analysis of the performance in the linear field of Equivalent-Frame Models for regular and irregular masonry walls
The Equivalent-Frame Method (EFM), a simplified procedure for structural modelling of masonry constructions, is having a great success for the good balance that it allows between the accuracy of the geometrical description and the simplicity of the mechanical calibration.
Despite the widespread use of EFM in scientific and professional field, some uncertainties affect its application to the specific problem of the existing unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings. For these structures, in fact, irregular geometries, the presence of deformable diaphragms and the interaction with other structures in aggregate configurations represent hard-to-model features that limit the accuracy of EFM.
The paper presents a comparative study in the linear field between EFM and the more accurate Finite Element Method (FEM), assumed as reference. The comparative analysis involves a wide set of geometrical schemes, characterized by both regular and irregular configurations, and it is aimed at providing a measure of the EFM modelling accuracy as a function of the geometry of the wall. Non-dimensional parameters allow exploring the limits of applicability of EFM for both regular and irregular walls.
Based on the parametric analyses, some recommendations are given for improving the effectiveness of the method and preserving the simplicity of application that makes EFM models so popular and widely used.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Characterization of Neural Activity using Complex Network Theory. Application to the Identification of the Altered Neural Substrates in Schizophrenia
