    Semantic intelligence in a seaport context

    This research work proposes the framework for seaport partners to interact on a semantic level and scope related with jurisdictions/ecosystems and regions to share knowledge among partners. New steps towards dealing with the traditional common sense for managing or governing the seaport are required for assisting the new generation of managers and port authorities. Sematic intelligence answers dilemmas of complex realities and alignments of strategies such as which strategic position may have the seaport facing the growing number of international networks and international treaties. In management and computational sciences, semantic intelligence has been discussed mostly from technological perspectives; however, a higher thinking intelligence for managing and govern the seaport surplus the classical intelligence approach found in literature

    Smart logistics nodes:concept and classification

    This paper presents the Smart Logistics Node concept, which combines the physical infrastructure of logistics nodes with digital systems to enhance collaboration. The Smart Logistics Node benefits from data sharing, supporting infrastructure, and Connected and Automated Transport (CAT) technologies. Based on a literature review on logistics nodes and CAT, we propose a general classification of Smart Logistics Nodes distinguishing upon the node function, degree of organisational (de-)centralisation, digital integration, and infrastructure support for automated driving. Then, we classify sixteen logistics nodes and find that high digital integration is common while automation is lacking. Further automation entails mixed traffic on public roads and requires organisational changes that do not always align with current business models. Our work supports the adoption of emerging technology at logistics nodes and the comparability of business cases. Ultimately, node authorities can use our concept and classification to draw a roadmap to develop CAT capabilities.</p

    Employee perceptions on adoption of an intelligent Port terminal : a case study of Durban Port terminals.

University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.The global financial crisis of 2007–2008, which caused a decline in economic activities leading to the 2008–2012 global recession, has led to the need for performance improvement techniques and effective cost reduction mechanisms to be implemented in operating port terminals. Ports in Durban have to come up with effective ways of revamping their operations and adoption of an intelligent port terminal is an alternative. This study seeks to determine the challenges and limitations experienced with the current technology used for port terminal operations in Durban and the influence of technological, organizational and environmental factors on the adoption of an intelligent port terminal at ports in Durban. The findings from this will enable port terminals, which are planning to adopt an intelligent port to be aware of factors to be considered before embarking on the project. The TOE theory was used in this study as it includes the environmental aspect, which is not covered by other technology adoption theories. The proposed research seeks to obtain appropriate study conclusions by adopting a quantitative research. Non probability sampling was used to select the suitable employees from port terminals in Durban to participate in this study. A questionnaire was used as an instrument to collect data, which was analysed with statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS). The analytical tests carried out on the data include reliability and validity test, statistical tests; descriptive statistics (frequency distributions, mean and Standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test, Regression analysis, and the one sample t-test). The study revealed that adequate technology needs to be acquired and emphasis should be on the compatibility and complexity of the technology as they have the biggest influence on the adoption of an intelligent port in Durban. Communication with stakeholders and IT skills retention are the most important organisational factors and customer readiness is the important aspect on environmental factors, which influence the adoption on an intelligent port terminal

    Exploration and implementation of Seaport Manatee to relieve the supply chain congestion at California ports

    For the global economy to thrive, a stable supply chain network is imperative to provide control of the seamless flow of goods. What is detrimental to supply chain performance due to inconsistency can be costly and consequently cause out-of-stock items, deficient use of container storage capacity and faulty logistics planning. This feasibility study examined leadership decisions in the face of supply chain turbulence. The analysis introduces the congestion free SeaPort Manatee in Palmetto, Florida. It establishes how this seaport could offer an alternative sea trade path to alleviate the supply chain strain since the U.S. will most likely continue to experience an increase in global trade instability. As the closest U.S. port to the Panama Canal, the study, in part, explores the significance of the canal as a primary conduit that allows Panamax and Neo-Panamax vessels expeditious transit from the West Coast to the Gulf Coast. Together with the new locks, the canal can handle ships with an overall length of 1200 feet, 160 feet wide (beam) and a draft of 40 feet. Consequently, not all vessels can travel through the Panama Canal regardless of its newly expanded locks (Rosenberg, 2019). The study also presents data to show how some cargo vessels sailing into Sea Port Manatee have a deep draft, which results in them being restricted by tidal ocean conditions. The draft is the minimum amount of water required to float the boat without it touching the bottom, allowing container vessels to successfully transport up to 15,000 (TEU) cargo containers through the canal. Catastrophic events such as natural disasters, a volatile political climate, and a health pandemic directly impact a company\u27s business strategy. This study addresses the challenge for leadership to make decisions to relieve the congestion at U.S. West Coast ports. By engaging in conversations with vessel shipping lines, shipping lines could create new sea trade routes in exchange for inefficient routes between Asia and the U.S. West Coast. This study introduced how sea-level rise will significantly influence port expansion at Sea Port Manatee and how vessels entering and exiting the port must do so under specific conditions

    A Multi-Agent based Approach for Simulating the Impact of Human Behaviours on Air Pollution

    International audienceThis paper presents a Multi-Agent System (MAS) approach for designing an air pollution simulator. The aim is to simulate the concentration of air pollutants emitted from sources (e.g. factories) and to investigate the emergence of cooperation between the emission source managers and the impact this has on air quality. The emission sources are controlled by agents. The agents try to achieve their goals (i.e. increase production, which has the side effect of raising air pollution) and also cooperate with others agents by altering their emission rate according to the air quality. The agents play an adapted version of the evolutionary N-Person Prisoners' Dilemma game in a non-deterministic environment; they have two decisions: decrease or increase the emission. The rewards/penalties are influenced by the pollutant concentration which is, in turn, determined using climatic parameters. In order to give predictions about the Plume Dispersion) model and an ANN (Artificial Neural Network) prediction model. The prediction is calculated using the dispersal information and real data about climatic parameters (wind speed, humidity, temperature and rainfall). Every agent cooperates with its neighbours that emit the same pollutant, and it learns how to adapt its strategy to gain more reward. When the pollution level exceeds the maximum allowed level, agents are penalised according to their participation. The system has been tested using real data from the region of Annaba (North-East Algeria). It helped to investigate how the regulations enhance the cooperation and may help controlling the air quality. The designed system helps the environmental agencies to assess their air pollution controlling policies

Addressing complex, interconnected sustainability challenges requires a systematic, interdisciplinary approach, where technology, AI, and data-driven methods offer potential solutions for optimizing resources, integrating different aspects of sustainability, and informed decision-making. Sustainability research surrounds various local, regional, and global challenges, emphasizing the need to identify emerging areas and gaps where AI and data-driven models play a crucial role. The study performs a comprehensive literature survey and scientometric and semantic analyses, categorizes data-driven methods for sustainability problems, and discusses the sustainable use of AI and big data. The outcomes of the analyses highlight the importance of collaborative and inclusive research that bridges regional differences, the interconnection of AI, technology, and sustainability topics, and the major research themes related to sustainability. It further emphasizes the significance of developing hybrid approaches combining AI, data-driven techniques, and expert knowledge for multi-level, multi-dimensional decision-making. Furthermore, the study recognizes the necessity of addressing ethical concerns and ensuring the sustainable use of AI and big data in sustainability research.</p

    Multiple probabilistic traveling salesman problem in the coordination of drug transportation - In the context of sustainability goals and Industry 4.0

    Improving the effectiveness of route planning, especially in road transport deliveries is a challenge we need to face in the context of advancing climate change and the sustainable development goals. The main aim of the paper is to demonstrate the above average and utilitarian significance of the multiple probabilistic traveling salesman problem (MPTSP) in the coordination and modeling of sustainable product transportation, which is a novelty at the theoretical, conceptual, methodological and empirical level. We propose a new, hybrid algorithm of solving MPTSP instances (it connects harmony search, k-means and 2-opt), which can be successfully used in economic practice for coordination and modeling of Industry 4.0. The effectiveness of proposed approach is tested using a case study of drugs distribution services and datasets obtained from the transportation enterprise located in Poland. The study focuses on the issue of planning routes, with particular emphasis on the changing demand of customers. It should be stressed that this work may be of interest to researchers but also to management practitioners. The value added of this research lies in the innovative modeling the coordination of sustainable drug transportation as an instance of MPTSP and proposing an effective method to solve it. The main research results confirm that proposed method contributes to overall sustainability of studied supply chain
