    Most vital segment barriers

    We study continuous analogues of "vitality" for discrete network flows/paths, and consider problems related to placing segment barriers that have highest impact on a flow/path in a polygonal domain. This extends the graph-theoretic notion of "most vital arcs" for flows/paths to geometric environments. We give hardness results and efficient algorithms for various versions of the problem, (almost) completely separating hard and polynomially-solvable cases

    Invariant Manifolds and Rate Constants in Driven Chemical Reactions

    Reaction rates of chemical reactions under nonequilibrium conditions can be determined through the construction of the normally hyperbolic invariant manifold (NHIM) [and moving dividing surface (DS)] associated with the transition state trajectory. Here, we extend our recent methods by constructing points on the NHIM accurately even for multidimensional cases. We also advance the implementation of machine learning approaches to construct smooth versions of the NHIM from a known high-accuracy set of its points. That is, we expand on our earlier use of neural nets, and introduce the use of Gaussian process regression for the determination of the NHIM. Finally, we compare and contrast all of these methods for a challenging two-dimensional model barrier case so as to illustrate their accuracy and general applicability.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, table of contents figur

    Periodic scheduling of marked graphs using balanced binary words

    This report presents an algorithm to statically schedule live and strongly connected Marked Graphs (MG). The proposed algorithm computes the best execution where the execution rate is maximal and place sizes are minimal. The proposed algorithm provides transition schedules represented as binary words.     A specialized interior-point algorithm for huge minimum convex cost flows in bipartite networks

    Research Report UPC-DEIO DR 2018-01. November 2018The computation of the Newton direction is the most time consuming step of interior-point methods. This direction was efficiently computed by a combination of Cholesky factorizations and conjugate gradients in a specialized interior-point method for block-angular structured problems. In this work we apply this algorithmic approach to solve very large instances of minimum cost flows problems in bipartite networks, for convex objective functions with diagonal Hessians (i.e., either linear, quadratic or separable nonlinear objectives). After analyzing the theoretical properties of the interior-point method for this kind of problems, we provide extensive computational experiments with linear and quadratic instances of up to one billion arcs and 200 and five million nodes in each subset of the node partition. For linear and quadratic instances our approach is compared with the barriers algorithms of CPLEX (both standard path-following and homogeneous-self-dual); for linear instances it is also compared with the different algorithms of the state-of-the-art network flow solver LEMON (namely: network simplex, capacity scaling, cost scaling and cycle canceling). The specialized interior-point approach significantly outperformed the other approaches in most of the linear and quadratic transportation instances tested. In particular, it always provided a solution within the time limit and it never exhausted the 192 Gigabytes of memory of the server used for the runs.     Barrier Coverage in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Barrier coverage is a critical issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for security applications, which aims to detect intruders attempting to penetrate protected areas. However, it is difficult to achieve desired barrier coverage after initial random deployment of sensors because their locations cannot be controlled or predicted. In this dissertation, we explore how to leverage the mobility capacity of mobile sensors to improve the quality of barrier coverage. We first study the 1-barrier coverage formation problem in heterogeneous sensor networks and explore how to efficiently use different types of mobile sensors to form a barrier with pre-deployed different types of stationary sensors. We introduce a novel directional barrier graph model and prove that the minimum cost of mobile sensors required to form a barrier with stationary sensors is the length of the shortest path from the source node to the destination node on the graph. In addition, we formulate the problem of minimizing the cost of moving mobile sensors to fill in the gaps on the shortest path as a minimum cost bipartite assignment problem and solve it in polynomial time using the Hungarian algorithm. We further study the k-barrier coverage formation problem in sensor networks. We introduce a novel weighted barrier graph model and prove that determining the minimum number of mobile sensors required to form k-barrier coverage is related with but not equal to finding k vertex-disjoint paths with the minimum total length on the WBG. With this observation, we propose an optimal algorithm and a faster greedy algorithm to find the minimum number of mobile sensors required to form k-barrier coverage. Finally, we study the barrier coverage formation problem when sensors have location errors. We derive the minimum number of mobile sensors needed to fill in a gap with a guarantee when location errors exist and propose a progressive method for mobile sensor deployment. Furthermore, we propose a fault tolerant weighted barrier graph to find the minimum number of mobile sensors needed to form barrier coverage with a guarantee. Both analytical and experimental studies demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms

    Membrane Fission: A Computational Complexity Perspective

    Membrane fission is a process by which a biological membrane is split into two new ones in the manner that the content of the initial membrane is separated and distributed between the new membranes. Inspired by this biological phenomenon, membrane separation rules were considered in membrane computing. In this work, we investigate cell-like P systems with symport/antiport rules and membrane separation rules from a computational complexity perspective. Specifically, we establish a limit on the efficiency of such P systems which use communication rules of length at most two, and we prove the computational efficiency of this kind of models when using communication rules of length at most three. Hence, a sharp borderline between tractability and NP–hardness is provided in terms of the length of communication rules.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2012-3743

    A Laminar Cortical Model for 3D Perception of Slanted and Curved Surfaces and of 2D Images: Developement, attention, and Bistability

    A model of laminar visual cortical dynamics proposes how 3D boundary and surface representations of slated and curved 3D objects and 2D images arise. The 3D boundary representations emerge from interactions between non-classical horizontal receptive field interactions with intracorticcal and intercortical feedback circuits. Such non-classical interactions contextually disambiguate classical receptive field responses to ambiguous visual cues using cells that are sensitive to angles and disparity gradients with cortical areas V1 and V2. These cells are all variants of bipole grouping cells. Model simulations show how horizontal connections can develop selectively to angles, how slanted surfaces can activate 3D boundary representations that are sensitive to angles and disparity gradients, how 3D filling-in occurs across slanted surfaces, how a 2D Necker cube image can be represented in 3D, and how bistable Necker cuber percepts occur. The model also explains data about slant aftereffects and 3D neon color spreading.
