    A novel load shedding methodology to mitigate voltage instability in power system

    Aim. A novel technique for detecting imminent voltage instability is proposed in this paper, accompanied by a novel load shedding approach to protect the system from voltage instability. Methodology. The proposed methodology utilizes the computation of nodal reactive power loss to voltage sensitivities with load increments in the system. Originality. The nodal reactive power loss to voltage sensitivity is a novel computation and is explored to detect the likelihood of voltage instability in this work. Results. If the system is experiencing an unprecedented load growth and if all the measures reach their limits, then load shedding is the last resort to safeguard the system against instability. The sudden change in nodal reactive power loss to voltage sensitivities is utilized to devise the quantity of load to be cut in the system. Practical value. The time-based simulations performed in New England 39 bus test system (NE-39 bus), the simulated results show that nodal reactive power loss to voltage sensitivities can be used as a trusted indicator for early diagnosing of menacing voltage instability and the timely implementation of load shedding developed from nodal reactive power loss to voltage sensitivities on the system ensures voltage stability.Мета. У статті пропонується новий метод виявлення навислої нестабільності напруги, що супроводжується новим підходом до скидання навантаження для захисту системи від нестабільності напруги. Методологія. У запропонованій методиці використовується розрахунок вузлових втрат реактивної потужності залежно від чутливості до напруги при збільшенні навантаження у системі. Оригінальність. У цій роботі вузлові втрати реактивної потужності залежно від чутливості до напруги являють собою новий розрахунок і досліджуються визначення ймовірності нестабільності напруги. Результати. Якщо система відчуває безпрецедентне зростання навантаження і всі заходи досягають меж своїх можливостей, скидання навантаження є останнім засобом захисту від нестабільності. Раптова зміна вузлових втрат реактивної потужності, залежно від чутливості до напруги, використовується для визначення величини навантаження, яка повинна бути відсічена в системі. Практична цінність. Моделювання, засноване на часі, виконане в тестовій системі шини New England 39 (шина NE-39), та результати моделювання показують, що залежність вузлових втрат реактивної потужності від чутливості до напруги може використовуватися як надійний індикатор для ранньої діагностики загрозливої нестабільності напруги та своєчасного впровадження скидання навантаження, що виникає внаслідок втрати реактивної потужності у вузлах, до чутливості системи до напруги,а забезпечує стабільність напруги

    Physics-Based and Data-Driven Analytics for Enhanced Planning and Operations in Power Systems with Deep Renewable Penetration

    This dissertation is motivated by the lack of combined physics-based and data-driven framework for solving power system challenges that are introduced by the integration of new devices and new system components. As increasing number of stochastic generation, responsive loads, and dynamic measurements are involved in the planning and operations of modern power systems, utilities and system operators are in great need of new analysis framework that could combine physical models and measuring data together for solving challenging planning and operational problems. In view of the above challenges, the high-level objective of this dissertation is to develop a framework for integrating measurement data into large physical systems modeled by dynamical equations. To this end, the dissertation first identifies four critical tasks for the planning and operations of the modern power systems: the data collection and pre-processing, the system situational awareness, the decision making process, as well as the post-event analysis. The dissertation then takes one concrete application in each of these critical tasks as the example, and proposes the physics-based/data-driven approach for solving the challenging problems faced by this specific application. To this end, this dissertation focuses on solving the following specific problems using physics-based/data-driven approaches. First, for the data collection and pre-processing platform, a purely data-driven approach is proposed to detect bad metering data in the phasor measurement unit (PMU) monitoring systems, and ensure the overall PMU data quality. Second, for the situational awareness platform, a physics-based voltage stability assessment method is presented to improve the situational awareness of system voltage instabilities. Third, for the decision making platform, a combined physics-based and data-driven framework is proposed to support the decision making process of PMU-based power plant model validation. Forth, for the post-event analysis platform, a physics-based post-event analysis is presented to identify the root causes of the sub-synchronous oscillations induced by the wind farm integration. The above problems and proposed solutions are discussed in detail in Section 2 through Section 5. The results of this work can be integrated to address practical problems in modern power system planning and operations

    A Non-intrusive Approach for Physics-constrained Learning with Application to Fuel Cell Modeling

    A data-driven model augmentation framework, referred to as Weakly-coupled Integrated Inference and Machine Learning (IIML), is presented to improve the predictive accuracy of physical models. In contrast to parameter calibration, this work seeks corrections to the structure of the model by a) inferring augmentation fields that are consistent with the underlying model, and b) transforming these fields into corrective model forms. The proposed approach couples the inference and learning steps in a weak sense via an alternating optimization approach. This coupling ensures that the augmentation fields remain learnable and maintain consistent functional relationships with local modeled quantities across the training dataset. An iterative solution procedure is presented in this paper, removing the need to embed the augmentation function during the inference process. This framework is used to infer an augmentation introduced within a Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) model using a small amount of training data (from only 14 training cases.) These training cases belong to a dataset consisting of high-fidelity simulation data obtained from a high-fidelity model of a first generation Toyota Mirai. All cases in this dataset are characterized by different inflow and outflow conditions on the same geometry. When tested on 1224 different configurations, the inferred augmentation significantly improves the predictive accuracy for a wide range of physical conditions. Predictions and available data for the current density distribution are also compared to demonstrate the predictive capability of the model for quantities of interest which were not involved in the inference process. The results demonstrate that the weakly-coupled IIML framework offers sophisticated and robust model augmentation capabilities without requiring extensive changes to the numerical solver

    A toolbox for multi-objective optimisation of low carbon powertrain topologies

    Stricter regulations and evolving environmental concerns have been exerting ever-increasing pressure on the automotive industry to produce low carbon vehicles that reduce emissions. As a result, increasing numbers of alternative powertrain architectures have been released into the marketplace to address this need. However, with a myriad of possible alternative powertrain configurations, which is the most appropriate type for a given vehicle class and duty cycle? To that end, comparative analyses of powertrain configurations have been widely carried out in literature; though such analyses only considered limited types of powertrain architectures at a time. Collating the results from these literature often produced findings that were discontinuous, which made it difficult for drawing conclusions when comparing multiple types of powertrains. The aim of this research is to propose a novel methodology that can be used by practitioners to improve the methods for comparative analyses of different types of powertrain architectures. Contrary to what has been done so far, the proposed methodology combines an optimisation algorithm with a Modular Powertrain Structure that facilitates the simultaneous approach to optimising multiple types of powertrain architectures. The contribution to science is two-folds; presenting a methodology to simultaneously select a powertrain architecture and optimise its component sizes for a given cost function, and demonstrating the use of multi-objective optimisation for identifying trade-offs between cost functions by powertrain architecture selection. Based on the results, the sizing of the powertrain components were influenced by the power and energy requirements of the drivecycle, whereas the powertrain architecture selection was mainly driven by the autonomy range requirements, vehicle mass constraints, CO2 emissions, and powertrain costs. For multi-objective optimisation, the creation of a 3-dimentional Pareto front showed multiple solution points for the different powertrain architectures, which was inherent from the ability of the methodology to concurrently evaluate those architectures. A diverging trend was observed on this front with the increase in the autonomy range, driven primarily by variation in powertrain cost per kilometre. Additionally, there appeared to be a trade-off in terms of electric powertrain sizing between CO2 emissions and lowest mass. This was more evident at lower autonomy ranges, where the battery efficiency was a deciding factor for CO2 emissions. The results have demonstrated the contribution of the proposed methodology in the area of multi-objective powertrain architecture optimisation, thus addressing the aims of this research

    A Model-Based Holistic Power Management Framework: A Study on Shipboard Power Systems for Navy Applications

    The recent development of Integrated Power Systems (IPS) for shipboard application has opened the horizon to introduce new technologies that address the increasing power demand along with the associated performance specifications. Similarly, the Shipboard Power System (SPS) features system components with multiple dynamic characteristics and require stringent regulations, leveraging a challenge for an efficient system level management. The shipboard power management needs to support the survivability, reliability, autonomy, and economy as the key features for design consideration. To address these multiple issues for an increasing system load and to embrace future technologies, an autonomic power management framework is required to maintain the system level objectives. To address the lack of the efficient management scheme, a generic model-based holistic power management framework is developed for naval SPS applications. The relationship between the system parameters are introduced in the form of models to be used by the model-based predictive controller for achieving the various power management goals. An intelligent diagnostic support system is developed to support the decision making capabilities of the main framework. Naïve Bayes’ theorem is used to classify the status of SPS to help dispatch the appropriate controls. A voltage control module is developed and implemented on a real-time test bed to verify the computation time. Variants of the limited look-ahead controls (LLC) are used throughout the dissertation to support the management framework design. Additionally, the ARIMA prediction is embedded in the approach to forecast the environmental variables in the system design. The developed generic framework binds the multiple functionalities in the form of overall system modules. Finally, the dissertation develops the distributed controller using the Interaction Balance Principle to solve the interconnected subsystem optimization problem. The LLC approach is used at the local level, and the conjugate gradient method coordinates all the lower level controllers to achieve the overall optimal solution. This novel approach provides better computing performance, more flexibility in design, and improved fault handling. The case-study demonstrates the applicability of the method and compares with the centralized approach. In addition, several measures to characterize the performance of the distributed controls approach are studied
