INFRAWEBS semantic web service development on the base of knowledge management layer
The paper gives an overview about the ongoing FP6-IST INFRAWEBS project and describes the main
layers and software components embedded in an application oriented realisation framework. An important part of
INFRAWEBS is a Semantic Web Unit (SWU) â a collaboration platform and interoperable middleware for
ontology-based handling and maintaining of SWS. The framework provides knowledge about a specific domain
and relies on ontologies to structure and exchange this knowledge to semantic service development modules.
INFRAWEBS Designer and Composer are sub-modules of SWU responsible for creating Semantic Web Services
using Case-Based Reasoning approach. The Service Access Middleware (SAM) is responsible for building up the
communication channels between users and various other modules. It serves as a generic middleware for
deployment of Semantic Web Services. This software toolset provides a development framework for creating and
maintaining the full-life-cycle of Semantic Web Services with specific application support
Experimental evaluation of distributed middleware with a virtualized java environment
The correctness and performance of large scale service oriented
systems depend on distributed middleware components performing
various communication and coordination functions. It is, however,
very difficult to experimentally assess such middleware components,
as interesting behavior often arises exclusively in large
scale settings, but such deployments are costly and time consuming.
We address this challenge with MINHA, a system that virtualizes
multiple JVM instances within a single JVM while simulating
key environment components, thus reproducing the concurrency,
distribution, and performance characteristics of the actual system.
The usefulness of MINHA is demonstrated by applying it to the
WS4D Java stack, a popular implementation of the Devices Profile
for Web Services (DPWS) specification.(undefined
Dynamic Discovery of Composable Type Adapters for Practical Web Services Workflow
As the Web Services and Grid community adopt Semantic Web technology, we observe a shift towards higher-level workflow composition and service discovery practices. While this provides excellent functionality to non-expert users, more sophisticated middleware is required to hide the details of service integration. By investigating a common Bioinformatics use case, we observe the need for Type Adaptor components to be inserted into Workflows to harmonise syntactically incompatible interfaces. In this paper, we propose a generic Type Adaptor description approach that can be used in conjunction with existing service registries to facilitate automatic syntactic mediation. We demonstrate our implementation before evaluating both the translation approach we employ, and the relative cost of using a registry for Type Adaptor discovery
Improving the Scalability of DPWS-Based Networked Infrastructures
The Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) specification enables seamless
discovery, configuration, and interoperability of networked devices in various
settings, ranging from home automation and multimedia to manufacturing
equipment and data centers. Unfortunately, the sheer simplicity of event
notification mechanisms that makes it fit for resource-constrained devices,
makes it hard to scale to large infrastructures with more stringent
dependability requirements, ironically, where self-configuration would be most
useful. In this report, we address this challenge with a proposal to integrate
gossip-based dissemination in DPWS, thus maintaining compatibility with
original assumptions of the specification, and avoiding a centralized
configuration server or custom black-box middleware components. In detail, we
show how our approach provides an evolutionary and non-intrusive solution to
the scalability limitations of DPWS and experimentally evaluate it with an
implementation based on the the Web Services for Devices (WS4D) Java Multi
Edition DPWS Stack (JMEDS).Comment: 28 pages, Technical Repor
Next-Generation EU DataGrid Data Management Services
We describe the architecture and initial implementation of the
next-generation of Grid Data Management Middleware in the EU DataGrid (EDG)
project.
The new architecture stems out of our experience and the users requirements
gathered during the two years of running our initial set of Grid Data
Management Services. All of our new services are based on the Web Service
technology paradigm, very much in line with the emerging Open Grid Services
Architecture (OGSA). We have modularized our components and invested a great
amount of effort towards a secure, extensible and robust service, starting from
the design but also using a streamlined build and testing framework.
Our service components are: Replica Location Service, Replica Metadata
Service, Replica Optimization Service, Replica Subscription and high-level
replica management. The service security infrastructure is fully GSI-enabled,
hence compatible with the existing Globus Toolkit 2-based services; moreover,
it allows for fine-grained authorization mechanisms that can be adjusted
depending on the service semantics.Comment: Talk from the 2003 Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics

A Methodology for Engineering Collaborative and ad-hoc Mobile Applications using SyD Middleware
Todayâs web applications are more collaborative and utilize standard and ubiquitous Internet protocols. We have earlier developed System on Mobile Devices (SyD) middleware to rapidly develop and deploy collaborative applications over heterogeneous and possibly mobile devices hosting web objects. In this paper, we present the software engineering methodology for developing SyD-enabled web applications and illustrate it through a case study on two representative applications: (i) a calendar of meeting application, which is a collaborative application and (ii) a travel application which is an ad-hoc collaborative application. SyD-enabled web objects allow us to create a collaborative application rapidly with limited coding effort. In this case study, the modular software architecture allowed us to hide the inherent heterogeneity among devices, data stores, and networks by presenting a uniform and persistent object view of mobile objects interacting through XML/SOAP requests and responses. The performance results we obtained show that the application scales well as we increase the group size and adapts well within the constraints of mobile devices
Middleware Technologies for Cloud of Things - a survey
The next wave of communication and applications rely on the new services
provided by Internet of Things which is becoming an important aspect in human
and machines future. The IoT services are a key solution for providing smart
environments in homes, buildings and cities. In the era of a massive number of
connected things and objects with a high grow rate, several challenges have
been raised such as management, aggregation and storage for big produced data.
In order to tackle some of these issues, cloud computing emerged to IoT as
Cloud of Things (CoT) which provides virtually unlimited cloud services to
enhance the large scale IoT platforms. There are several factors to be
considered in design and implementation of a CoT platform. One of the most
important and challenging problems is the heterogeneity of different objects.
This problem can be addressed by deploying suitable "Middleware". Middleware
sits between things and applications that make a reliable platform for
communication among things with different interfaces, operating systems, and
architectures. The main aim of this paper is to study the middleware
technologies for CoT. Toward this end, we first present the main features and
characteristics of middlewares. Next we study different architecture styles and
service domains. Then we presents several middlewares that are suitable for CoT
based platforms and lastly a list of current challenges and issues in design of
CoT based middlewares is discussed.Comment: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352864817301268,
