    Comparison of the Time-Delay Margin of a Distributed and Centralized Observer

    International audienceThe benefit of a distributed observer concept for large-scale linear plants is shown by taking time-delays into account. It is asserted that a centralized observer suffers from delays in the measurement input, while a distributed structure allows to avoid them. In contrast, the network of the distributed observer induces communication delays among observer nodes. The delay margins for both observer concepts are estimated on a numerical example and compared using an eigenvalue-based frequency domain approach and an LMI based time-domain approach

    A synopsis of test results and knowledge gained from the Phase-0 CSI evolutionary model

    The Phase-0 CSI Evolutionary Model (CEM) is a testbed for the study of space platform global line-of-sight (LOS) pointing. Now that the tests have been completed, a summary of hardware and closed-loop test experiences is necessary to insure a timely dissemination of the knowledge gained. The testbed is described and modeling experiences are presented followed by a summary of the research performed by various investigators. Some early lessons on implementing the closed-loop controllers are described with particular emphasis on real-time computing requirements. A summary of closed-loop studies and a synopsis of test results are presented. Plans for evolving the CEM from phase 0 to phases 1 and 2 are also described. Subsequently, a summary of knowledge gained from the design and testing of the Phase-0 CEM is made

    Design of a distributed finite-time observer using observability decompositions

    International audienceIn this paper, a distributed observer is presented to estimate the state of a linear time-invariant plant in finite-time in each observer node. The design is based on a decomposition into locally observable and unobservable substates and on properties of homogeneous systems. Each observer node can reconstruct in finite-time its locally observable substate with its measurements only. Then exploiting the coupling, a finite-time converging observer is constructed for the remaining states by adding the consensus terms. A numerical example illustrates the result

    Online Recursive Detection and Adaptive Fuzzy Mitigation of Cyber-Physical Attacks Targeting Topology of IMG: An LFC Case Study

    Due to the low inertia of inverter-based islanded microgrids (IMGs), these systems require a delicate and accurate load frequency control (LFC) scheme. The deployment of such a control scheme, which preserves the balance between the load and generation, needs a cyber layer on top of the physical system that makes IMGs an appealing target for a variety of cyber-physical attacks (CPAs). Among these CPAs, there is a family of malicious CPAs whose aim is to compromise the LFC scheme by changing the topology of IMG and its parameters. On this basis, an online system identification method is developed to estimate the parameters of IMG using the recursive least square forgetting factor (RLS-FF) approach. Then, based on the estimated parameters, an anomaly-based intrusion detection system (IDS) is developed to identify CPAs and distinguish them from the uncertainties in the normal operation of IMG. Following anomaly detection, a mitigation scheme is proposed to regulate the IMG’s frequency using an adaptive interval type-2 fuzzy logic controller (IT2FLC). The proposed IT2FLC uses different types of distributed energy resources (DERs)—i.e., tidal power plants and solar panels which are, respectively, equipped with inertia emulation and droop-based controllers—to improve the frequency excursion resulting from CPAs. The simulation results verify the performance of the developed detection and mitigation schemes, particularly when the RLS-FF parameters, i.e., forgetting factor, covariance matrix, and reset parameter, are obtained through the grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm. Furthermore, the designed mitigation scheme is corroborated by comparing its performance with several well-known attack-resilient control frameworks in LFC studies, e.g., linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and H∞, using real-time simulations.©2023 IEEE.     Robust de-centralized control and estimation for inter-connected systems

    The thesis is concerned with the theoretical development of the control of inter-connected systems to achieve the whole overall stability and specific performance. A special included feature is the Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) problem for the inter-connected system in terms of local subsystem actuator fault estimation. Hence, the thesis describes the main FTC challenges of distributed control of uncertain non-linear inter-connected systems. The basic principle adopted throughout the work is that the controller has two components, one involving the nominal control with unmatched components including uncertainties and disturbances. The second controller dealing with matched components including uncertainties and actuator faults. The main contributions of the thesis are summarised as follows: - The non-linear inter-connected systems are controlled by two controllers. The linear part via a linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique and the discontinuous part by using Integral Sliding Mode Control (ISMC) based on state feedback control. - The development of a new observer-based state estimate control strategy for non-linear inter-connected systems. The technique is applied either to every individual subsystem or to the whole as one shot system. - A new proposal of Adaptive Output Integral Sliding Mode Control (AOISMC) based only on output information plus static output feedback control is designed via an LMI formulation to control non-linear inter-connected systems. The new method is verified by application to a mathematical example representing an electrical power generator. - The development of a new method to design a dynamic control based on an LMI framework with Output Integral Sliding Mode Control (OISMC) to improve the stability and performance. - Using the above framework, making use of LMI tools and ISMC, a method of on-line actuator fault estimation has been proposed using the Proportional Multiple Integral Observer (PMIO) for fault estimation applicable to non-linear inter-connected systems

    Impact of Geo-distribution and Mining Pools on Blockchains: A Study of Ethereum

    Given the large adoption and economical impact of permissionless blockchains, the complexity of the underlying systems and the adversarial environment in which they operate, it is fundamental to properly study and understand the emergent behavior and properties of these systems. We describe our experience on a detailed, one-month study of the Ethereum network from several geographically dispersed observation points. We leverage multiple geographic vantage points to assess the key pillars of Ethereum, namely geographical dispersion, network efficiency, blockchain efficiency and security, and the impact of mining pools. Among other new findings, we identify previously undocumented forms of selfish behavior and show that the prevalence of powerful mining pools exacerbates the geographical impact on block propagation delays. Furthermore, we provide a set of open measurement and processing tools, as well as the data set of the collected measurements, in order to promote further research on understanding permissionless blockchains.Comment: To appear in 50th IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN), 202
