    3D Shape Similarity Using Vectors of Locally Aggregated Tensors

    IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2013International audienceIn this paper, we present an efficient 3D object retrieval method invariant to scale, orientation and pose. Our approach is based on the dense extraction of discriminative local descriptors extracted from 2D views. We aggregate the descriptors into a single vector signature using tensor products. The similarity between 3D models can then be efficiently computed with a simple dot product. Experiments on the SHREC12 commonly-used benchmark demonstrate that our approach obtains superior performance in searching for generic shapes

    Pattern matching of footwear Impressions

    One of the most frequently secured types of evidence at crime scenes are footware impressions. Identifying the brand and model of the footware can be crucial to narrowing the search for suspects. This is done by forensic experts by comparing the evidence found at the crime scene with a huge list of reference impressions. In order to support the forensic experts an automatic retrieval of the most likely matches is desired.In this thesis different techniques are evaluated to recognize and match footwear impressions, using reference and real crime scene shoeprint images. Due to the conditions in which the shoeprints are found (partial occlusions, variation in shape) a translation, rotation and scale invariant system is needed. A VLAD (Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors) encoder is used to clustering descriptors obtained using different approaches, such as SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform), Dense SIFT in a Triplet CNN (Convolutional Neural Network). These last two approaches provide the best performance results when the parameters are correctly adjusted, using the Cumulative Matching Characteristic curve to evaluate it.En esta tesis se evalúan diferentes técnicas para reconocer y emparejar impresiones de calzado, utilizando imágenes de referencia y de escenas reales de crimen. Debido a las condiciones en que se encuentran las impresiones (oclusiones parciales, variaciones de forma) se necesita un sistema invariante ante translación, rotación y escalado. Para ello se utiliza un codificador VLAD (Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors) para agrupar descriptores obtenidos en diferentes enfoques, como SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform), Dense SIFT y Triplet CNN (Convolutional Neural Network). Estos dos últimos enfoques proporcionan los mejores resultados una vez los parámetros se han ajustado correctamente, utilizando la curva CMC (Characteristic Matching Curve) para realizar la evaluación.En aquesta tesi s'avaluen diferents tècniques per reconèixer i aparellar impressions de calçat, utilitzant imatges de referència i d'escenes reals de crim. Degut a les condicions en què es troben les impressions (oclusions parcials, variació de forma ) es necessita un sistema invariant davant translació, rotació i escalat.     Enhancing Deep Learning Models through Tensorization: A Comprehensive Survey and Framework

    The burgeoning growth of public domain data and the increasing complexity of deep learning model architectures have underscored the need for more efficient data representation and analysis techniques. This paper is motivated by the work of (Helal, 2023) and aims to present a comprehensive overview of tensorization. This transformative approach bridges the gap between the inherently multidimensional nature of data and the simplified 2-dimensional matrices commonly used in linear algebra-based machine learning algorithms. This paper explores the steps involved in tensorization, multidimensional data sources, various multiway analysis methods employed, and the benefits of these approaches. A small example of Blind Source Separation (BSS) is presented comparing 2-dimensional algorithms and a multiway algorithm in Python. Results indicate that multiway analysis is more expressive. Contrary to the intuition of the dimensionality curse, utilising multidimensional datasets in their native form and applying multiway analysis methods grounded in multilinear algebra reveal a profound capacity to capture intricate interrelationships among various dimensions while, surprisingly, reducing the number of model parameters and accelerating processing. A survey of the multi-away analysis methods and integration with various Deep Neural Networks models is presented using case studies in different application domains.Comment: 34 pages, 8 figures, 4 table

    Curvature-based spectral signatures for non-rigid shape retrieval

    The geometric properties of descriptors derived from the diusion geometry family have many valuable properties for shape analysis. These descriptors, also known as diusion distances, use the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator to construct invariant metrics about the shape. Although they are invariant to many transformations, non-rigid deformations still modify the shape spectrum. In this paper, we propose a shape descriptor framework based on a Lagrangian formulation of dynamics on the surface of the object. We show how our framework can be applied to non-rigid shape retrieval, once it benefits from the analysis and the automatic identification of shape joints, using a curvature-based scheme to identify these regions. We also propose modifications to the Improved Wave Kernel Signature in order to keep descriptors more stable against non-rigid deformations. We compare our spectral components with the classic ones and our spectral framework with state-of-the-art non-rigid signatures on traditional benchmarks, showing that our shape spectra is more stable and discriminative and clearly outperforms other descriptors in the SHREC’10, SHREC’11 and SHREC’17 benchmarks

    Novel techniques of computational intelligence for analysis of astronomical structures

    Gravitational forces cause the formation and evolution of a variety of cosmological structures. The detailed investigation and study of these structures is a crucial step towards our understanding of the universe. This thesis provides several solutions for the detection and classification of such structures. In the first part of the thesis, we focus on astronomical simulations, and we propose two algorithms to extract stellar structures. Although they follow different strategies (while the first one is a downsampling method, the second one keeps all samples), both techniques help to build more effective probabilistic models. In the second part, we consider observational data, and the goal is to overcome some of the common challenges in observational data such as noisy features and imbalanced classes. For instance, when not enough examples are present in the training set, two different strategies are used: a) nearest neighbor technique and b) outlier detection technique. In summary, both parts of the thesis show the effectiveness of automated algorithms in extracting valuable information from astronomical databases
