    A Modeling and Analysis Framework To Support Monitoring, Assessment, and Control of Manufacturing Systems Using Hybrid Models

    The manufacturing industry has constantly been challenged to improve productivity, adapt to continuous changes in demand, and reduce cost. The need for a competitive advantage has motivated research for new modeling and control strategies able to support reconfiguration considering the coupling between different aspects of plant floor operations. However, models of manufacturing systems usually capture the process flow and machine capabilities while neglecting the machine dynamics. The disjoint analysis of system-level interactions and machine-level dynamics limits the effectiveness of performance assessment and control strategies. This dissertation addresses the enhancement of productivity and adaptability of manufacturing systems by monitoring and controlling both the behavior of independent machines and their interactions. A novel control framework is introduced to support performance monitoring and decision making using real-time simulation, anomaly detection, and multi-objective optimization. The intellectual merit of this dissertation lies in (1) the development a mathematical framework to create hybrid models of both machines and systems capable of running in real-time, (2) the algorithms to improve anomaly detection and diagnosis using context-sensitive adaptive threshold limits combined with context-specific classification models, and (3) the construction of a simulation-based optimization strategy to support decision making considering the inherent trade-offs between productivity, quality, reliability, and energy usage. The result is a framework that transforms the state-of-the-art of manufacturing by enabling real-time performance monitoring, assessment, and control of plant floor operations. The control strategy aims to improve the productivity and sustainability of manufacturing systems using multi-objective optimization. The outcomes of this dissertation were implemented in an experimental testbed. Results demonstrate the potential to support maintenance actions, productivity analysis, and decision making in manufacturing systems. Furthermore, the proposed framework lays the foundation for a seamless integration of real systems and virtual models. The broader impact of this dissertation is the advancement of manufacturing science that is crucial to support economic growth. The implementation of the framework proposed in this dissertation can result in higher productivity, lower downtime, and energy savings. Although the project focuses on discrete manufacturing with a flow shop configuration, the control framework, modeling strategy, and optimization approach can be translated to job shop configurations or batch processes.     Applications of Bayesian networks and Petri nets in safety, reliability, and risk assessments: A review

    YesSystem safety, reliability and risk analysis are important tasks that are performed throughout the system lifecycle to ensure the dependability of safety-critical systems. Probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) approaches are comprehensive, structured and logical methods widely used for this purpose. PRA approaches include, but not limited to, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Event Tree Analysis (ETA). Growing complexity of modern systems and their capability of behaving dynamically make it challenging for classical PRA techniques to analyse such systems accurately. For a comprehensive and accurate analysis of complex systems, different characteristics such as functional dependencies among components, temporal behaviour of systems, multiple failure modes/states for components/systems, and uncertainty in system behaviour and failure data are needed to be considered. Unfortunately, classical approaches are not capable of accounting for these aspects. Bayesian networks (BNs) have gained popularity in risk assessment applications due to their flexible structure and capability of incorporating most of the above mentioned aspects during analysis. Furthermore, BNs have the ability to perform diagnostic analysis. Petri Nets are another formal graphical and mathematical tool capable of modelling and analysing dynamic behaviour of systems. They are also increasingly used for system safety, reliability and risk evaluation. This paper presents a review of the applications of Bayesian networks and Petri nets in system safety, reliability and risk assessments. The review highlights the potential usefulness of the BN and PN based approaches over other classical approaches, and relative strengths and weaknesses in different practical application scenarios.This work was funded by the DEIS H2020 project (Grant Agreement 732242)

    Scheduling Algorithms: Challenges Towards Smart Manufacturing

    Collecting, processing, analyzing, and driving knowledge from large-scale real-time data is now realized with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning (DL). The breakthrough of Industry 4.0 lays a foundation for intelligent manufacturing. However, implementation challenges of scheduling algorithms in the context of smart manufacturing are not yet comprehensively studied. The purpose of this study is to show the scheduling No.s that need to be considered in the smart manufacturing paradigm. To attain this objective, the literature review is conducted in five stages using publish or perish tools from different sources such as Scopus, Pubmed, Crossref, and Google Scholar. As a result, the first contribution of this study is a critical analysis of existing production scheduling algorithms\u27 characteristics and limitations from the viewpoint of smart manufacturing. The other contribution is to suggest the best strategies for selecting scheduling algorithms in a real-world scenario

    Enhancing the performance of automated guided vehicles through reliability, operation and maintenance assessment

    Automated guided vehicles (AGVs), a type of unmanned moving robots that move along fixed routes or are directed by laser navigation systems, are increasingly used in modern society to improve efficiency and lower the cost of production. A fleet of AGVs operate together to form a fully automatic transport system, which is known as an AGV system. To date, their added value in efficiency improvement and cost reduction has been sufficiently explored via conducting in-depth research on route optimisation, system layout configuration, and traffic control. However, their safe application has not received sufficient attention although the failure of AGVs may significantly impact the operation and efficiency of the entire system. This issue becomes more markable today particularly in the light of the fact that the size of AGV systems is becoming much larger and their operating environment is becoming more complex than ever before. This motivates the research into AGV reliability, availability and maintenance issues in this thesis, which aims to answer the following four fundamental questions: (1) How could AGVs fail? (2) How is the reliability of individual AGVs in the system assessed? (3) How does a failed AGV affect the operation of the other AGVs and the performance of the whole system? (4) How can an optimal maintenance strategy for AGV systems be achieved? In order to answer these questions, the method for identifying the critical subsystems and actions of AGVs is studied first in this thesis. Then based on the research results, mathematical models are developed in Python to simulate AGV systems and assess their performance in different scenarios. In the research of this thesis, Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) was adopted first to analyse the failure modes and effects of individual AGV subsystems. The interactions of these subsystems were studied via performing Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). Then, a mathematical model was developed to simulate the operation of a single AGV with the aid of Petri Nets (PNs). Since most existing AGV systems in modern industries and warehouses consist of multiple AGVs that operate synchronously to perform specific tasks, it is necessary to investigate the interactions between different AGVs in the same system. To facilitate the research of multi-AGV systems, the model of a three-AGV system with unidirectional paths was considered. In the model, an advanced concept PN, namely Coloured Petri Net (CPN), was creatively used to describe the movements of the AGVs. Attributing to the application of CPN, not only the movements of the AGVs but also the various operation and maintenance activities of the AGV systems (for example, item delivery, corrective maintenance, periodic maintenance, etc.) can be readily simulated. Such a unique technique provides us with an effective tool to investigate larger-scale AGV systems. To investigate the reliability, efficiency and maintenance of dynamic AGV systems which consist of multiple single-load and multi-load AGVs traveling along different bidirectional routes in different missions, an AGV system consisting of 9 stations was simulated using the CPN methods. Moreover, the automatic recycling of failed AGVs is studied as well in order to further reduce human participation in the operation of AGV systems. Finally, the simulation results were used to optimise the design, operation and maintenance of multi-AGV systems with the consideration of the throughputs and corresponding costs of them.The research reported in this thesis contributes to the design, reliability, operation, and maintenance of large-scale AGV systems in the modern and rapidly changing world.</div

    SCS: 60 years and counting! A time to reflect on the Society's scholarly contribution to M&S from the turn of the millennium.

    The Society for Modeling and Simulation International (SCS) is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Since its inception, the Society has widely disseminated the advancements in the field of modeling and simulation (M&S) through its peer-reviewed journals. In this paper we profile research that has been published in the journal SIMULATION: Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International from the turn of the millennium to 2010; the objective is to acknowledge the contribution of the authors and their seminal research papers, their respective universities/departments and the geographical diversity of the authors' affiliations. Yet another objective is to contribute towards the understanding of the overall evolution of the discipline of M&S; this is achieved through the classification of M&S techniques and its frequency of use, analysis of the sectors that have seen the predomination application of M&S and the context of its application. It is expected that this paper will lead to further appreciation of the contribution of the Society in influencing the growth of M&S as a discipline and, indeed, in steering its future direction
