    The café in modernist literature: Wyndham Lewis, Ernest Hemingway, Jean Rhys

    This study explores the representation of the cafĂ© in literary modernism. As its primary works range from the early 1900s to 1939, I have restricted my choice of exemplary writers in an effort to pay attention to issues of subject, style, and technique in greater detail than a survey would allow. Following a brief history of the literary cafĂ©, three principal chapters focus upon the following authors in this order: Wyndham Lewis, Ernest Hemingway, and Jean Rhys. Contextualised by the café’s fundamental role in the lives of artists, the creation of art, and the great art movements throughout history, the thesis traces the ways in which the novelists engage imaginatively with this important social and cultural space. The study is underpinned by the spatial theory of Henri Lefebvre, Michel de Certeau, and Michel Foucault. From this theoretical platform I assemble a conceptual framework and a spatial vocabulary that facilitates the critical engagement with the literary representation of the cafĂ©. Methodologically, the cafĂ© essentially functions as a lens through which I analyse modernist writers, their texts, and their aesthetic preoccupations. Each chapter can be read as a discrete study that contributes fresh analyses, new insights, and re-evaluations of familiar texts and existing scholarship. However, as a whole, the thesis offers an entirely novel way of reading literary modernism, championing the use of the cafĂ© as a serious heuristic device

    Insecture: interdisciplinary engagements in an emergent entomological design practice

    This practice-based research defines an emergent, interdisciplinary practice with the central aim of reframing the insect through design. The research began as an exploration into how to use design to create a different appreciation of insects through an understanding of how we perceive them and manage our proximity to them. Subsequently, through an investigatory process of reflection, a deeper knowledge of design and how I design, reframed by these biological entities, has been unveiled. Two insights have emerged: firstly, knowledge of the proclivities imbued in my work; and secondly, the ways in which the integration of insects can draw out multimodal design outcomes. During the period of this research, projects were designed with and for insects: emblems, a shop concept, a habitat structure, and products including a viewing apparatus and insect terrarium. These key projects created aesthetic approaches to the framing of and interaction with these animals. Design consideration of the commercial industry applications of insects bioengineering, food production, and pet breeding has presented another approach to sustainability. I have defined this insect-based strategy to designing as Design Applied Environmental Entomology. While the design work was produced in Australia, Canada and Japan, it was the Japanese context that influenced the development of investigatory strategies. In particular, the orientation on Japan provided significant historical and contemporary precedents on the role insects can have in society. In all, the design processes and methodologies that were developed in this PhD have examined the use of insects as a vehicle for design ideation and practice. By integrating living insects into concepts, processes and prototypes, the research offers models for different forms of design interactivity, offering opportunities within the public milieu to demonstrate enthusiasm, care, and value for these animals. Extreme challenges related to typical factors (e.g., cost, schedule, quality) are coupled with a radically different business model - one shaped by a product development strategy that relies heavily on globally dispersed risk-sharing partners. In addition, the 787 would use dramatically new carbon composite materials and manufacturing methods for the airplane structure, as well as advanced technologies for the airplane systems and propulsion. This was further complicated by the parallel development of new design software intended for use in creating, sharing, and managing all 787 product definition data. The lead design engineer - among the most critical resource on the product development team - must engage on all fronts. Given the complexities of this endeavor, advanced skills are necessary for engineering leaders to succeed, and Boeing must ensure they have these skills.     The Social Role of Spiritual Communication: Authority as a Relationship between Shaykh and Follower in the Contemporary áčŹarÄ«qa Shadhuliyya-Yashrutiyya in Amman, Acre and Jaffa

    This study analyses the authority of Shaykh Ahmad al-Yashruti in Amman, Acre, and Jaffa. He is the master of the Shadhuliyya-Yashrutiyya, a Sufi áč­arÄ«qa (brotherhood) which originated in Acre but is now based in Amman. It examines how the changing religious climate and the challenges faced by the Palestinian people affect the role of the Shaykh and the cohesion of the community. This study approaches both the concept of authority and the practice of fieldwork from a relational perspective, and discusses the challenges faced when doing multi-sited fieldwork using Graham Harvey’s concept of ‘methodological guesthood’. The study analyses how the founding Shaykh’s charisma is maintained in a áč­arÄ«qa which is institutionalised on traditional (kinship) lines, and focuses on the doctrinal, functional and locational aspects of Shaykh Ahmad’s authority by examining the underlying paradigm of authority, as well as the different roles his followers attribute to him, how these are connected to the functions of the zawāya (lodges) in Amman and Acre, and how this affects the áč­arÄ«qa’s place in society and in the arena of ‘Muslim Politics’ (as understood by Eickelman and Piscatori). This is mainly done by focusing on the emic concept of tarbiya (education), which corresponds to Berger and Luckmann’s concept of ‘socialisation’ and Asad’s approach to the transmission of a discursive tradition that is in a continuous process of transmission and reinterpretation through the institutionalised relationship between Sufi shaykhs and followers. The study argues that the process of tarbiya and the mode of communication between Shaykh and follower – which mainly consists of indirect communications and signs to be identified and interpreted by the follower – allows the áč­arÄ«qa to value both individuality and submission to the Shaykh; it also allows it to be centralised, while at the same time adaptable to local circumstances.
