Adaptive Sliding Mode Contouring Control Design Based on Reference Adjustment and Uncertainty Compensation for Feed Drive Systems
Industrial feed drive systems, particularly, ball-screw and lead-screw feed drives are among the dominating motion components in production and manufacturing industries. They operate around the clock at high speeds for coping with the rising production demands. Adversely, high-speed motions cause mechanical vibrations, high-energy consumption, and insufficient accuracy. Although there are many control strategies in the literature, such as sliding mode and model predictive controls, further research is necessary for precision enhancement and energy saving. This study focused on design of an adaptive sliding mode contouring control based on reference adjustment and uncertainty compensation for feed drive systems. A combined reference adjustment and uncertainty compensator for precision motion of industrial feed drive systems were designed. For feasibility of the approach, simulation using matlab was conducted, and results are compared with those of an adaptive nonlinear sliding model contouring controller. The addition of uncertainty compensator showed a substantial improvement in performance by reducing the average contour error by 85.71% and the maximum contouring error by 78.64% under low speed compared to the adaptive sliding mode contouring controller with reference adjustment. Under high speed, the addition of uncertainty compensator reduced the average and absolute maximum contour errors by 4.48% and 10.13%, respectively. The experimental verification will be done in future.

Observer Sliding Mode Control Design for lower Exoskeleton system: Rehabilitation Case
Sliding mode (SM) has been selected as the controlling technique, and the state observer (SO) design is used as a component of active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) to reduce the knee position trajectory for therapeutic purposes. The suggested controller will improve the needed position performances for the Exoskeleton system when compared to the proportional-derivative controller (PD) and SMC as feed-forward in the ADRC approach, as shown theoretically and through computer simulations. Simulink tool is used in this comparison to analyze the nominal case and several disruption cases. The results of mathematical modeling and simulation studies demonstrated that SMC with a disturbance observer strategy performs better than the PD control system and SMC in feed-forward with a greater capacity to reject disturbances and significantly better than these controllers. Performance indices are used for numerical comparison to demonstrate the superiority of these controllers

Machine drive control design involves many technical issues for efficient and robust exploitation. Over several decades, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is getting preferred for industrial applications over its counterpart Squirrel Cage Induction Motor (SCIM) drive, because of their higher efficiency, power density, and higher torque to inertia ratio.
In the prospective that PMSM drives are considered the drives of the future, there are still technical challenges and issues related to PMSM control. Many studies have been devoted to PMSM control in the past, but there are still some open research areas that bring worldwide researchers’ interests back to PMSM drive control. One of the approaches that may facilitate better performance, higher efficiency, and robust and reliable work of the control system is the disturbance observer-based control (DOBC) with linear and nonlinear output feedback control for PM synchronous machine applications. DOBC is adopted due to its ability to reject external and internal disturbances with improving tracking performance in the variable speed wind energy conversion system (WECS) to maximize power extraction. The high order disturbance observer (HODO) is utilized to estimate the aerodynamic torque-based wind speed without the use of a traditional anemometer, which reduces the overall cost and improves the reliability of the whole system. Also, this method has been designed to improve the angular shaft speed tracking of the PMSM system under load torque disturbance and speed variations.
The model-based linear and nonlinear feedback control are used in the proposed control systems. The sliding mode control (SMC) with switching output feedback control law and integral SMC with linear feedback and state-dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) based approaches have been designed for the systems. The SDRE control accounts for the nonlinear multivariable structure of the WECS and is approximated with Taylor series expansion terms. The chattering inherited from SMC is eliminated by the continuous approximation technique. The sliding mode is guaranteed by eliminating the reaching mode in the proposed integral SMC. The model-free cascaded linear feedback control system based on the proportional-integral (PI) controllers use a back-calculation algorithm anti-windup scheme. The proposed speed controllers are synthesized with HODO to compensate for the external disturbance, model uncertainty, noise, and modelling errors. Moreover, servomechanism-based SDRE control, a near-optimal control system is designed to suppress the model uncertainty and noise without the use of disturbance observers.
The proposed control systems for PMSM speed regulation have demonstrated a significant improvement in the angular shaft speed-tracking performance at the transients. Their performances have been tested under speed, load torque variations, and model uncertainty. For example, HODO-based SMC with switching output feedback control law (SOFCL) has demonstrated improvement by more than 78% than the PI-PI control system of the PMSM. The performance of the HODOs-based Integral SMC with SDRE nonlinear feedback is improved by 80.5% under external disturbance, model uncertainty, and noise than Integral SMC with linear feedback in the WECS. The HODO-based SDRE control with servomechanism has shown an 80.2% improvement of mean absolute percentage error under disturbances than Integral SMC with linear feedback in the WECS. The PMSM speed tracking performance of the proposed HODO-based discrete-time PI-PI control system with back-calculation algorithm anti-windup scheme is improved by 87.29% and 90.2% in the speed commands and load torque disturbance variations scenarios respectively. The simulations for testing the proposed control system of the PMSM system and WECS have been implemented in Matlab/Simulink environment. Precision Control of High Speed Ball Screw Drives
Industrial demands for higher productivity rates and more stringent part tolerances require faster production machines that can produce, assemble, or manipulate parts at higher speeds and with better accuracy than ever before. In a majority of production machines, such as machine tools, ball screw drives are used as the primary motion delivery mechanism due to their reasonably high accuracy, high mechanical stiffness, and low cost. This brings the motivation for the research in this thesis, which has been to develop new control techniques that can achieve high bandwidths near the structural frequencies of ball screw drives, and also compensate for various imperfections in their motion delivery, so that better tool positioning accuracy can be achieved at high speeds.
A precision ball screw drive has been designed and built for this study. Detailed dynamic modeling and identification has been performed, considering rigid body dynamics, nonlinear friction, torque ripples, axial and torsional vibrations, lead errors, and elastic deformations. Adaptive Sliding Mode Controller (ASMC) is designed based on the rigid body dynamics and notch filters are used to attenuate the effect of structural resonances. Feedforward friction compensation is also added to improve the tracking accuracy at velocity reversals. A bandwidth of 223 Hz was achieved while controlling the rotational motion of the ball screw, leading to a servo error equivalent to 1.6 um of translational motion.
The motor and mechanical torque ripples were also modeled and compensated in the control law. This improved the motion smoothness and accuracy, especially at low speeds and low control bandwidths. The performance improvement was also noticeable when higher speeds and control bandwidths were used. By adding on the torque ripple compensation, the rotational tracking accuracy was improved to 0.95 um while executing feed motions with 1 m/sec velocity and 1 g acceleration.
As one of the main contributions in this thesis, the dynamics of the 1st axial mode (at 132 Hz) were actively compensated using ASMC, which resulted in a command tracking bandwidth of 208 Hz. The mode compensating ASMC (MC-ASMC) was also shown to improve the dynamic stiffness of the drive system, around the axial resonance, by injecting additional damping at this mode. After compensating for the lead errors as well, a translational tracking accuracy of 2.6 um was realized while executing 1 m/sec feed motions with 0.5 g acceleration transients. In terms of bandwidth, speed, and accuracy, these results surpass the performance of most ball screw driven machine tools by 4-5 times.
As the second main contribution in this thesis, the elastic deformations (ED) of the ball screw drive were modeled and compensated using a robust strategy. The robustness originates from using the real-time feedback control signal to monitor the effect of any potential perturbations on the load side, such as mass variations or cutting forces, which can lead to additional elastic deformations. In experimental results, it is shown that this compensation scheme can accurately estimate and correct for the elastic deformation, even when there is 130% variation in the translating table mass. The ED compensation strategy has resulted in 4.1 um of translational accuracy while executing at 1 m/sec feed motion with 0.5 g acceleration transients, without using a linear encoder. This result is especially significant for low-cost CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machine tools that have only rotary encoders on their motors. Such machines can benefit from the significant accuracy improvement provided by this compensation scheme, without the need for an additional linear encoder
Disturbance/uncertainty estimation and attenuation techniques in PMSM drives–a survey
This paper gives a comprehensive overview on
disturbance/uncertainty estimation and attenuation (DUEA) techniques in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives.
Various disturbances and uncertainties in PMSM and also other alternating current (AC) motor drives are first reviewed which shows they have different behaviors and appear in different control loops of the system. The existing DUEA and other relevant control methods in handling disturbances and uncertainties widely used in PMSM drives, and their latest developments are then discussed and summarized. It also provides in-depth analysis of the relationship between these advanced control methods in the context of PMSM systems. When dealing with uncertainties,it is shown that DUEA has a different but complementary mechanism to widely used robust control and adaptive control. The similarities and differences in disturbance attenuation of DUEA and other promising methods such as internal model
control and output regulation theory have been analyzed in detail. The wide applications of these methods in different AC
motor drives (in particular in PMSM drives) are categorized and summarized. Finally the paper ends with the discussion on future
directions in this area
Review On Controller Design In Pneumatic Actuator Drive System
A pneumatic actuator is a device that converts compressed air into mechanical energy to perform varieties of work. It exhibits high nonlinearities due to high friction forces, compressibility of air and dead band of the spool movement which is difficult to manage and requires an appropriate controller for better performance. The purpose of this study is to review the controller design of pneumatic actuator recommended by previous researchers from the past years. Initially, the basic views of the pneumatic will be presented in terms of introduction to the pneumatic actuator and its applications in industries. At the end of this review, discussions on the design of the controllers will be concluded and further research will be proposed along with the improvement of control strategies in the pneumatic actuator systems
Precise Positioning Control Strategy Of Machine Tools: A Review
In this article, a precise positioning control strategy for the nonlinearity of machine tools is thoroughly reviewed. Precise positioning is crucial in machine tools industry where nonlinear phenomenon must be considered. Therefore, this paper aims to review various techniques used to enhance the precision of nonlinearity of machine tools. In the introduction, a significant review of machine tools is discussed based on deadzone phenomenon and high bandwidth. After that, linear control strategies are reviewed involving Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) and Cascade P/PI controller. This is followed by nonlinear control strategies, Nonlinear PID (NPID), Adaptive NPID (ANPID), Feedforward NPID (FNPID), Adaptive Robust Controller (ARC), Nominal Characteristics Trajectory Following (NCTF) controller and lastly, the fuzzy and neural network control is then reviewed. Finally, conclusions are presented according to the past researches conducted. Further studies regarding the topic can be improved by the implementation of several additional modules such as deadzone and feedforward compensators and disturbance observer that focus on both disturbance forces such as cutting force and friction force
