    Uncertain Multi-Criteria Optimization Problems

    Get PDF
Most real-world search and optimization problems naturally involve multiple criteria as objectives. Generally, symmetry, asymmetry, and anti-symmetry are basic characteristics of binary relationships used when modeling optimization problems. Moreover, the notion of symmetry has appeared in many articles about uncertainty theories that are employed in multi-criteria problems. Different solutions may produce trade-offs (conflicting scenarios) among different objectives. A better solution with respect to one objective may compromise other objectives. There are various factors that need to be considered to address the problems in multidisciplinary research, which is critical for the overall sustainability of human development and activity. In this regard, in recent decades, decision-making theory has been the subject of intense research activities due to its wide applications in different areas. The decision-making theory approach has become an important means to provide real-time solutions to uncertainty problems. Theories such as probability theory, fuzzy set theory, type-2 fuzzy set theory, rough set, and uncertainty theory, available in the existing literature, deal with such uncertainties. Nevertheless, the uncertain multi-criteria characteristics in such problems have not yet been explored in depth, and there is much left to be achieved in this direction. Hence, different mathematical models of real-life multi-criteria optimization problems can be developed in various uncertain frameworks with special emphasis on optimization problems

The book considers these issues not only from a technological viewpoint but also on how society, labor and the economy are affected, leading to a circular economy that affects the way people design, function and deploy complex systems

    Smart Urban Water Networks

    Get PDF
This book presents the paper form of the Special Issue (SI) on Smart Urban Water Networks. The number and topics of the papers in the SI confirm the growing interest of operators and researchers for the new paradigm of smart networks, as part of the more general smart city. The SI showed that digital information and communication technology (ICT), with the implementation of smart meters and other digital devices, can significantly improve the modelling and the management of urban water networks, contributing to a radical transformation of the traditional paradigm of water utilities. The paper collection in this SI includes different crucial topics such as the reliability, resilience, and performance of water networks, innovative demand management, and the novel challenge of real-time control and operation, along with their implications for cyber-security. The SI collected fourteen papers that provide a wide perspective of solutions, trends, and challenges in the contest of smart urban water networks. Some solutions have already been implemented in pilot sites (i.e., for water network partitioning, cyber-security, and water demand disaggregation and forecasting), while further investigations are required for other methods, e.g., the data-driven approaches for real time control. In all cases, a new deal between academia, industry, and governments must be embraced to start the new era of smart urban water systems

The Selection of Intermodal Transport System Scenarios in the Function of Southeastern Europe Regional Development

    Get PDF
The development of intermodal transportation (IT) systems is of vital importance for the sustainability of logistics activities. The existing research point at individual directions of action for system improvement and increase of IT participation in overall transportation, thus reducing negative impacts of logistics on sustainability. However, there is a lack of research defining complex scenarios that unite existing ideas and concepts of IT system development and improvement. Accordingly, this article deals with the definition and selection of the most appropriate IT development scenario for the region of Southeastern Europe. Six different potential scenarios that differ in the network configuration, the required level of logistics infrastructure development, the role of different IT terminal categories, the involvement of different transportation modes, and goods flows’ transformation degree, are defined. The scenarios are analyzed according to four stakeholder groups and twelve defined criteria. A novel hybrid multi-criteria decision-making model, based on fuzzy Delphi, fuzzy Factor Relationship (FARE), and fuzzy Measurement of Alternatives and Ranking according to Compromise Solution (MARCOS) methods, is developed for solving the problem. The definition and analysis of the problem, the way of establishing the scenarios, as well as the development of a novel hybrid model are the main contributions of this article. A significant contribution is also the consideration of the Dry Port (DP) concept for the first time in the context of river ports. The results indicate that the scenario referring to the development of the IT core network with the Danube DP terminals is potentially the most appropriate scenario for the Southeastern Europe IT system

The accelerated industrialization in recent years has brought serious problems related to the natural environment. This fact has contributed to the emergence of a more ecologically responsible type of consumer, forcing companies to adapt their processes, strategies, and practices to a more sustainable concept, culminating in the advent of Green Manufacturing (GM) practices. However, many Brazilian companies face difficulties in implementing those practices, ranging from country economic issues to companies’ managerial problems. In this context, this work aims to analyze the main barriers for implementing GM in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and large companies in the Brazilian food industry. To attain this purpose, this research is twofold. A review of the literature and the use of the DEMATEL method to analyze seven Brazilian companies were proposed to identify and analyze those barriers. This research contributes with a list of the main barriers to GM, and the identification and analysis of the most influential barriers depending on the size of the company. The results show that the company size may have a significant influence on the barriers to implement GM practices

Não existem estudos perfeitos, daí as vantagens e limitações desta abordagem serem, também, objeto de discussãoThe environment in which people live directly influences their values and behaviors. Cities are often characterized by degraded areas, vandalized buildings and abandoned land. This is called Blight. This phenomenon is considered a complex decision-making problem, which has several effects at both individual and community levels. This dissertation aims to evaluate, economically, socially and environmentally, the impact caused by Blight. The complexity of this phenomenon means that analyses should encompass variables of both objective and subjective nature. Some of the studies already carried out have limitations that this dissertation, through a methodological combination of cognitive mapping and the DEcision MAking Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) technique, intends to address, developing a multicriteria analysis system based on the inputs provided by a panel of experts. The advantages and limitations of our proposal are also discussed
